Trouble with resetting HMD orientation

I am unable to reset the HMD orientation when looking at the main menu.
It only works after I'm sitting in the cockpit.
Also, if my Oculus isn't sitting in just the right spot when I launch the game, it automatically recenters to some crazy orientation.

Is this by design?

When I launch Elite from the launcher, it seems to reset the HMD orientation based on where my Oculus is sitting at the time instead of just using the last "centered" setting.

Because of these two problems together, I have to stand next to my rig and hold the HMD in the right spot when launching Elite. If I just leave it sitting on my desk while waiting for it to launch, when I get into the menu screen I have to twist my head in strange ways to see the menu (since I'm unable to reset the orientation.)

EDIT: Problem solved!
I remapped the command to the F12 key instead of the 'E' key and now I can reset HMD orientation on the menu screen.

Yep, same for me - you can reset it while looking at the spinning spaceship too.

I always start off in some wacky orientation... its never the same twice!

Is anyone able to reset the HMD orientation while in the main menu?

Seems silly to disable that command until after you've navigated through menus.

If you have a button bound to reset HMD it works fine, as early as the main Elite logo just before the shader cache screens. Another thing I found out is that the 'ALT+CTRL+G' key combo to turn off your ships UI also works from the main menu, meaning that you can start the game with the ships GUI off! Nice.... Now if only the game remembered I turned off my thrusters when I parked.

Oh, I forgot - you can also set it in the early loading screens too (ED Log etc and while your GPU is loading stars etc (circular waiting icon).

Aaaand, you can press the Oculus button on the remote, and reset orientation from the grey options screen.

Just not in the Start Menu for ED. I agree, its odd.

Odd, works fine for me on the main menu as well!

I have it mapped to 'E'.

I use Voice Attack to activate it. Works fine in the cockpit, but not on the menu screen.

I've tried using the actual keyboard too in case it had something to do with Voice Attack, but it still doesn't work.

No idea why that would be, it works fine for me and always has but I use a button and not a key. No idea if that changes anything. Try changing the bind, I think it defaults to F12 or change it to a button on your stick even if its just for testing.

For me F12 - or the Voice Attack command that triggers it - works well in the main menu. When starting up the game centering with F12 starts working right from the moment where the loading screen no longer follows my head movement.

On the main menu, I have a "Comms" window up and can't seem to get rid of it. Perhaps that was causing problems with commands that use normal letters.

F12 works great though.

Thanks everyone for helping.

I have mapped the recenter button to my HOTAS and i can not only recenter in the menu, i can also do it while the game launches and the 3D loading screen of the Elite logo is displayed, or in other words in every instance of the game.

I think the issue with my ED not resetting in the menu screen is because I have the space bar set as the mapped button for HMD Recentre. If I use something else, it works fine, even in the start menu.

The start menu wants to use space for the 'select' function, i.e. if I press space, it goes to the tutorials etc rather than resetting my viewpoint. I can navigate all menus with my HOTAS so I normally use that in the Start menu screen. I must have space as a secondary fire button or something... even though it doesn't fire my weapons in space. Odd.

I rarely need to recentre once in-game, so the space bar is kinda handy, easy to find too in VR.

Any chance you could explain how you managed it please Cmdr? I've tried reminding to several keys on my hotas (Warthog & pedals) if that makes a difference- bit it always defaults to F12 no matter which key, some say it only works after you come out of game and then back in? I'll try the log out/log back in tomorrow (late now and work in the morning) ...but if you could enlighten me I'd be absolutely chuffed! Fly safe Cmdr o7

Well exiting out of the game and restarting ED should make sure that setting is saved properly. If it keeps resetting to F12, I'm not sure. Mine doesn't do that.
I just remapped the big ol' space bar to HMD Recentre so its easy to hit. :)

PS my Warthog isn't using any custom scripts etc, just the button mappings you see in the joystick calibration/check pages in Win7/8/10
