Worst case scenario, when FD stop running the servers and release the game code, then I'm sure there will be Newtonian/and other version mods to be made to cater for exactly what you wish. Personally though I hope that's a long way off. Wouldn't you prefer to play the game DB wants to make, and trust him to get the balance right before getting it altered and distorted, he did amazingly well originally, and has learned a number of lessons on the way. There will come a time....

SP Offline with no internet connection required to start the game is a must for me, as I tend to spend a lot of the summer down my caravan, where there is no internet, apart from a very weak and intermittent gprs signal. Being able to play E : D in true SP offline mode would be great.

You might be able to BUT you might have to only authorise it once ala minecraft model. Details on this are not known at this stage. If it is a caravan then presumably you are using a laptop. Even if it is a desktop you should be able to install and authorise (if needed) once and then to the caravan. :)

I think people are greatly overestimating the number of players they will be running into. The galaxy is a very, very, very, big place. I expect that the multiplayer game will be, for the most part, played in single player simply due to the scale of the game world.

Expect it to be very busy around the core systems and get more and more lonely as you move away. If you go far enough out you will eventually get to a point where the chances of running in to someone will literally be 1 in a billion :p

But it's always nice knowing that there will always be more un-explored systems than explored ones. Plus even the explored ones will change over time :)

I wonder how this will work since in the originals your systems would eventually malfunction due to lack of servicing. Scooping fuel is all well and good but how many hyperspace jumps can a ship make before it breaks down? And then what do you do?

I remember reading about this point exactly, there are long range ships or one speifically designed to be able to stay away from core systems for long periods of time so there must be some systems on board as well as game mechanics involved there. So should be fine for SP offline as well

Sorry can't recall where I read that. Was in the DDF I believe, I'll see if I can spot it as it would be in the archive by now.

Yep, that'll be fine - online to authorise once, and get updates/patches/fixes, but being able to play single player offline afterwards. I would expect that the offline single player 'mode' would in no way be transferable to the online 'mode' as there would be too much scope for file hacker shenanigans. I.e. you cannot take your ship(s), ranks and credits from offline SP over to any form of online game.

If I chose to play SP Offline mode, not having that profile being transferable to online MP play is no loss to me.

I am expecting to spend 95% to 98% of my ED play-time in SP Offline mode actually. MP is not such a great incentive for me.

We've already stated that there is an offline single player mode in the game.

Do we know yet if we can have a game saved in Offline mode and another in Online mode? My reasoning is that it sounds like we can only have one account in Online mode. So, I might want to play as a pirate sometimes or a Bounty Hunter while keeping my Trader 'pure' in the Online mode. Or I might just fancy taking on the Vipers at a space station for a laugh like in the old days and clearly I'd not choose to do so in online mode if I'm running a law abiding ship there.

What a strange poll. Do we want it done right, or do we want it to be done as the way FD wants it to be. It's a bit loaded really. Who would ever vote that they don't want it done "right"!

I can't wait for elite and trust FD to do it right. Truth is ideally I probably WOULD like a single player game but for reasons which just won't work with a multiplayer game at all sadly.

Balance is vital in multiplayer games. If a ship is loads better than others either everyone will have the same ship or if you don't have it you get your ass handed to you.

In 1 player games you don't have this probkem .. one of the things I love in these games is dreaming of getting a certain ship, one which strikes fear into the enemy, and one which is a real pita when you come across and have to fight. Such a ship would take a long time to get......

This does not really work in multiplayer in a gamelike ED where you dont have areas limited to certain levels or equipment most upgrades tend to be side grades with strengths balanced with weaknesses. Any other way and newbies will get owned... badly.

But all that being said we can't expect FD to make such a game where the balance is totally different to the multiplayer game, so after that big long story, I think I have to say trust FD to to it how they want. I guess my kind of gaming is outdated, I am all about single player story gaming and coop Plyer vs engine games.

But you will be getting a single player game. Single player offline is, for all intents and purposes, a single player game. There is no way that another human player can barge in on your session.

That's not what I meant. Yep there is a one player game but presumably the ships will be the same. No flying an uber ship the envy of the universe

Ah, sorry yes, I see what you mean. No, this single player game will be bound by the same restrictions as per the MP portion of the game. So there will be no uber ship as such but there will be ships that are more suited for particular roles i.e. don't go trading in a Sidewinder or bounty hunting in a Lifter.

Anyway, I think if there was an uber ship that completely unbalances the game, even in SP, I don't see the game lasting very long for that player as what would be the challenge? I guess that would be the players choice. I think cheating in SP is fine for instance and some games have this cheating fuctionality built right in to the game to cater for this. But ED has been built from the ground up as an MP experience so it's no surprise that the "tacked on", if you'll pardon the expression, SP component is going to be affected by this.

Let's look at just one of the possible SP improvements, multiple load/saves, which as far as I know, is not implemented in any version.

In another thread, a player was expressing his frustration as his friend had ranked to Elite for the short time he borrowed his game, and you replied ...

No save game to go back to? Damn, that must have been harsh.

Considering we could be playing the same game for years, it is important the single player be given multiple points to restore their game to, not just one. You do not see many SP games which have just one save point, unless they have some kind of linear progress and have implemented a checkpoint system. ED is hardly a linear game - quite the opposite, and as such it will benefit greatly from players being able to load games of their choosing. This will allow them to revert back to fork points, or to rollback & avoid previously unknown game bugs.

I can understand why multiple save points may not be implemented. It is trivially easy though to copy saves somewhere else, and copy them back if you mess something up - as long as the saves are on local storage.

If you don't know which files to copy, find out what they are using resource monitor etc, and then just stick them on a USB drive.

If saves are online somewhere, that complicates things :(

I want a SP mode simply because I don't like having to deal with the [redacted] who's sole purpose for playing is to make life as miserable as possible for others. They are one of the reasons I don't play MMO's anymore.

I don't see how having multiple offline saves might allow people to cheat in multiplayer. For example, multiplayer 'saves' might exist solely on the server or be formatted differently to SP ones.
