Trying out the new Cannon

(well, new to me)

So far, I like it. Its like a single barrel multicannon, with long reload times, and a supposedly big punch. I'm used to timing railgun hits, so aiming it comes naturally to me.

I guess sort of a "poor man's Railgun, without the kick" if you like. And without the heat.

It seems to work better on hulls than against shields (where it appears to ricochet off), as it will plink federal fighter shields for like 10%, but annihilate their unshielded hull in 1 hit

At least those are my impressions so far.

What do you think about them?

I haven't tried them yet, but from your description, it sounds like I want some!

oh, I forgot to mention:

Its a slow projectile (being the solid soda can bullet that it is), so you have to lead your target by quite a lot. This interferes with laser aiming, meaning you wont be able to combine the weapons simultaneously.

Oh, and it has ZERO aim assist. Players may note that supposedly "fixed" pulse lasers have about a 3 degree aim, and railguns have about a 1 degree. I have yet to see the boresight on my cannon ever shift.

Good point - just noticed that myself today. Wondered how I was such a good shot...

I didn't like it myself. But it is a lot cheaper than using missiles.

nbody uses missles. i hope they plan on having a wider range of hard points or ones that fit in internal undercarriages, so far we have something like a Direct Attack Guided Rocket from a rocket pod.

I like it! I use 2 of them combined with 2 beam lasers. They DO overheat quite a lot. However they can educe a Cobra's shields in 2 hits with 2 of them. Great for up close and beams for far away.

They are poor against shield but excellent against hull and subsystems. Considered trying the gimballed version, it's one class down but you can then fire your fixed lasers on target at the same time. And as Adept said they are kinetic so they don't lose damage over distance but you can easily miss.

Here is a short 1 minute video between me in a dual-cannoned Sidewinder and a NPC Eagle:

Video is uploading, should be ready in about 20 or 30 minutes.

I have to say, I like 'em too. Good punch, but you have to make your shots count because there's a long reload/recycle time.

Thank you for that Bipper.
That is an interesting weapon.
I was hoping that we would get a shotgun weapon like that.

So, what are your feelings about the weapon? Any thoughts?

So far, I like it, but I tend to enjoy high risk/reward weapons that require making shots count. I don't like weapons that require you to kill your enemy through a thousand paper cuts. That said, I will probably go back to the combination of one pulse and one cannon. I had actually planned on 1 pulse/1 rail gun, but with the new power requirements, smaller ships can't use the rail gun. So I tried the cannon to see if it could fill the role and essentially it does. It's a little harder to use than the rail gun, but it's more balanced. You have the reduced range, inaccuracy (compared to energy weapons), and slow firing speed pretty well balanced out by its damage potential. Ammo doesn't seem to be an issue... You get plenty of shots.

I heard mention of a Class 1 gimballed variant (haven't seen one though), but in my opinion it would be a waste. Gimballed ballistic weapons just don't seem to work very well. Plus the whole point of taking the cannon is for its punch... Reducing that by going to a class 1 gimball kinda defeats the point. I also saw there was a class 4 variant. I'll have to try a couple of those on a Viper or Cobra to see if there's a significant damage increase between it and the class 2. I had been hearing in PB that there wasn't a lot of difference between the damage output of the different classes, but maybe that's changed now.
