Trying to decide on Eagle or Hauler for first real ship!

The Eagle is hands-down the most maneuverable ship in the game, with excellent speed ratings.

The Eagle has the lowest speed of all combat ships, and ranks still near the bottom if you include the multi-purpose ships. They are either faster (Viper, Cobra, Asp, Vulture, FDL, Clipper), or far, far more durable and powerful (Python*, Anaconda).

I'm in a Cobra now. It only took 2 round trips with rares, one got me in the adder and the 2nd got me in the Cobra. Lol... Really is pretty quick. Now I am doing some bounty hunting and am doing fairly well so far but just started.
You're gonna love dat asp when you get ahold of it.

Wait, are you saying I am suppose to laugh about getting blown up in a hauler? My goal is not to get blown up and take the fastest route to getting a viper or something. :) so far i have been doing cargo hauling in the sidewinder but thats mainly cause i cant do much else and its pretty stock except for the fsd.

Ok wait, just to clarify... If i buy either of these ships, wont they come with stock stuff like the sidewinder did or are you saying i have to buy ALL that. I understand i need to upgrade the stuff i just mean it doesnt come as an empty shell right?

if i upgrade a hauler would it be able to do an occasional bounty or fight off a pirate? If so that might be the route i want to go and maybe save the pewing for my next ship. I want to feel confident but i dont think the eagle will give me that feel if it is made of paper machet.

The Hauler is the weakest ship in the game at combat, you'll be toast in any PvP and against any NPC in anything better than a sidey unless you're a very good combat flyer.
