Newcomer / Intro Turn Rate problems

  1. I suspect you're in a high security system. That might explain why the wanted targets tend to be "better".
  2. FA off does not affect turn rates. If you're turning slowly with FA on, you'll keep turning slowly with it off. Try boosting, flicking FA off, setting the throttle to zero and pitching up (while still in the boost). You'll flip much quicker. It takes practice, but it's well worth it.
  3. You're using M/KB, yes? Set roll to the keyboard (A and D work well) and yaw to the mouse.
  4. Bulletin board missions are affected by your reputation with the faction. You get better ones the more they like you!

Did you do the combat training missions?

Might be worthwhile upgrading your thrusters too..

Sounds like you need some practice. if you are getting all highly ranked targets then reset the instance until you get an easier one.

Read up and learn to fly, it's not an instant 'jump in and be elite' game, and it will take you some time to get the feel of different ships and their capabilities.

I felt exactly the same when I started!

one of the problems with this game is the fact that the only harmless targets are clean, so i get a bounty on my head.....all wanted targets tend to be competent or higher.

you are wrong there, i encountered anacondas as well as the skil levels tend to be competent or higher, all the harmless ones are clean.

IMHO even competent or dangerous AI in systems near the starting point are super easy. It could just be anecdotal evidence, but it wasn't until I went a few systems out that I ran into the first AI with missiles and some sense of flying that included more than straight lines or a simple circle.

I had the same problem with the default controls, you'll definitely want to play around with them a lot to try and find out what works for you.

Personally I couldn't stand mouse X-axis being Roll so I set that to Yaw. I then changed around all the keyboard Roll and Thrust Left/Right/Up/Down to what my muscle memory is used to from other games.

Another suggestion I'd like to add is make note of what your keybinds for Throttle Zero, 50% (blue zone in normal space), 75% (blue zone while in supercruiser) and 100% are (for getting out of station mass lock range)

I still had the problem of my ship feeling like it was pitching up and down really slow. I tried playing with the sensitivity, deadzone and power curve to no avail, until I eventually gave up and switched from relative to absolute mode. My flying is really twitchy while cruising around and (un)docking at stations but I find it much better in battle trying to get your crosshairs back onto someone. Don't forget to bind the Reset Mouse option if you're going to switch it to Absolute mode.

@Lithari; do you have the same issue in the Skirmish Combat training scenario? It's against 2 condors (competent rating) and they're pretty fast... ?

I have tried turning off the flight assist mode and it just causes me to go into a roll, i counter it and i go into a roll again....so i keep the thing on, if its something i have to turn off to do anything, i will move onto something else....the only time when i don't have a problem is when they are targeting someone else, which kinda defeats the purpose of it.

Yes, it is very awkward to fly with FA off, that's why I only ever use it for about 5 seconds at the very most. I only use it when the target is flying by me or out-turning me so that I can get him centred in my sights, turn FA back on again and fly normally.

Flick it off, pull back hard (it'll inevitably start rolling a bit at this stage, so I need to keep nudging the stick left and right a bit to counter, rudder seems to help too, weirdly). The more I practice the more stable the turn gets. For some reason, it only seems to work well for me if my initial speed is low (mid-low end of blue band). As soon as I turn FA off I also max throttles and you really can see a huge difference in turning speed. If I'm flying fast, FA off seems to be completely ineffective.

Best place to practise it is coming out from a station, as that gives you a frame of reference. Fly straight out a bit, then turn FA off and spin around and see how long it takes you to get the station centred ahead of you again.

Your other option, buy an Eagle or Vulture. I finally bought a Vulture last night and its turning speed is fantastic. Of course, with a Vulture AND FA Off, it's better again, it's insane how quickly it flips around and gets back on the target's tail.

Well,

Someone suggested to stick to the blue zone, unless i need to catch up, but once i am in real fighting distance to go to the blue zone and stay there and as the target goes past me, make sure i roll to where they are above me and turn off flight assist pull up and then when they are in my sights turn it back on and it seems to be working for me.

I was able to get winged up with another commander in a Vulture killing wanted npcs at a RES and i must have made 1.2mil in that hour.........none of them were players, considering i play on the mobius private group.

Its made combat more fun now that i can actually fight back, but i doubt i will be ready for fighting players....ever, since they tend to get others to fight for them.

When it comes to facing 2 enemies, i will always lose regardless, i even have a viper now, i would still lose against 2 ships on my own or i will get severely damaged.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to explain, but my English may not have been the best. Anyway, glad you got it now :)

Now apply the above on the skirmish combat training against the 2 condors and refrain from using the missiles as that's too easy. Practice this scenario regularly as it's a very good example of an enemy who can and will easily out-turn you. In the beginning it took me really long to finish them off, but once I found out about the above method I have no trouble dispatching them quickly.
Before I start the game I still sometimes play that scenario once just for the fun of it :)

Great to hear you got it sorted. When I started off I actually found combat really dull, as I was endlessly chasing around in circles trying to get a hit. But once you can hold your own, it completely changes and becomes the best part of the game - IMO.

On multiple enemies, I agree. I mean I can take down an Anaconda easily enough - given enough time and ammo. But 2-3 opponents could be more difficult, given that you can out-manoeuvre both at once so you're constantly being fired upon. Focusing on the weakest enemies and taking them down quickly is my usual approach, it limits the amount of time you spend with multiple enemies shooting at you. Still, in combat zones I usually end up facing 3, 4 or more enemies and eventually have to run.

Well, the issue is, i tend to get stuck with groups of the same ships and same skill levels, its not like 2 are cobras and 1 is an eagle....nope, its always the same ship.
