There are many tales of the American west, while it was being settled, of explorers loosing their way or choosing the wrong mountain pass to try to get across the Rockies. I am certainly glad they did not have your attitude about exploration!
I agree 100 percent that it would be a VERY handy tool to be able to select systems and determine distance.
There is a system on the edge of the galaxy that's about 2300 LY away from anything else. It's all alone out there in the deep reaches of space. For that you can't really do anything and will likely never get someone to explore it.
