Newcomer / Intro Tutorial Is Insane

I spent 2 hours in the basic combat training trying to shoot down a drone that would fly too far away to hit. Then I would go after it and as soon as I got a bead on it, the flight computer would lock my controls and take me back to the start, repeat over and over. Ran out of ammo, had nothing but laser. Apparently it doesn't damage it or it heals while I'm being dragged back. Who wrote this tutorial? Not sure I will stick with this.

That tutorial is really very easy. I'm surprised that so many seem to have trouble with it. I supposed it is possible that it will fly out of the site which is something that should have been accounted for by the scenario writer, but, I've never given it the opportunity to do so whenever I've tried it because someone said it was hard. I mean, 2 hours? Can you post a video so I can see what you're doing?

The drone rarely comes within range and if you go after it, the autopilot takes control and brings you back. Also, you can't see the ship because it's covered by a giant white dot with the word "Target" by it. I should think the red box that appears around it should be plenty sufficient to mark it. I also must have hit it at least several hundred times. I'd think that should have destroyed it.

I think @StuBaDub has the right idea. It does sound as though you have not targeted the drone (the fact you see a "box" around it indicates that) - that would explain why your weapons are not hitting the target as much as they should be. The drones are easy meat in the tutorial and yes you do get pulled back if you stray outside the combat "box" of the tutorial.

A lot of things are controlled by the tutorial program anyway (that sort of thing doesn't happen in the actual game) but in this case it expects you to target the drone, it has not done it for you.

Then why does it not target it when I press the key for target? I was taking the "Target" text as a noun. Are you saying it's a verb? That might indeed be the issue but I pressed the target but. Do you have to be aimed at something dead on to set a target? That might be difficult with the awkward control of the ship. I probably should take some time to adjust all the controls and key binds first. If I move my mouse 1/4" the ship nearly does a barrel roll.

The purpose of the tutorial is to let you get to grips with the basics of the controls and how things work in a safe space, so yes, that would be a good idea (y)
Yeah, I'm probably an idiot. I'm a Lefty too, so the default keys rarely ever are convenient. There are just so many hotkeys in the game and I was eager to jump into it.

If you are keen to just skip it then you should - it's allowed. You can always go back and do the tutorial at a later date (from the right panel)

Many people used to skip the combat tutorials as they can be a challenge, and once you get the hang of flying they become .. less so :)

When I first started playing, I had to do most of the tutorials multiple times. Starting with mouse and KBD was my first big mistake. Once I switched to joystick, things were much better.

That said, this game, in general, has a big learning curve and can be very, VERY, unforgiving at times. However, I find it very rewarding and fun once I understood that.

Keep at it and you'll probably be up to speed in no time.

Yes the "Target" word you see / saw was a noun - the tutorial puts up a graphic to show you where the target is so it is just a label. When the object you are looking to shoot is in front of you (I think the "cone" is quite wide - maybe 50°? {that is a guess}) - press the key for Target Ahead (by default on the keyboard it is "T") - the box you saw now disappears and the ship now has three chevrons forming a triangle to give an indication of its orientation to you (see 0:28 in @Codger's video above) . At the same time your Target Info Box (to the left of the scanner display) now shows the targeted ship and also shows its orientation to you in its associated holograph.

All sounds convoluted but it soon becomes second nature.

Good luck
