TWCS Throttle question

I'd like to pick the brains of those who use the Thrustmaster TWCS Throttle.

I've had my T16000m Hotas (including the above throttle) for about three months and like it over all. The stick has Warthog accuracy plus that added ruddle movement. The throttle is button heaven, which makes up for the stick's lack of useful buttons and that's all fine for me.

The problem I have is with the movement of the throttle. I've loosened and adjusted the tension-er screw to get rid of the gabbiness it had but it seems that I only have a choice of too loose or too tight and grabby. I've come to the conclusion that getting it just right will require more or better grease in the inside if the unit, but I'm wondering if opening it up to add some silicon grease will void the warrantee. I'm also wondering what silicon grease would stay on the internal slider bars the longest if I do decode to open it and lube it. I think I want some fairly sticky grease so it will last as long as possible.

If you've research this same thing of have lubed your TWCS Thruttle let me know what you think.

If you know of a previous thread which I missed on this exact subject please post a link.

Thanks

PS: Yes, I know that I'm should have posted this thread elsewhere, but no one would have seen it if I'd done that. Moderators, please forgive me and let it stay her for a bit. Thanks

I sprayed some silicone grease in there (without taking it apart) which we had lying around at work...
worked ok but now there’s a little “sticktion” returning...

do you fix it down?.... I put a bit of blue tack underneath too... also helped...

Good luck..

I’ve got mine set pretty much as loose as it gets, since that’s preferable to sticking, but no, I’ve never been brave enough to crack the thing open to lube it. Usually when I open up an electronic item, it ends in disaster.

As Speedy O said, sticking the base to the table is a good plan. I have mine firmly Velcro’d down and don’t really have many issues.

One more here with it Velcro stuck down, it works.

Worst part about the stick is learning to map the buttons and setting up curves in the TARGET software. It took forever to get just right.

I use TWCS throttle in DCS and I'm loving the default setting. That said, I have read some people lube the throttle with different kind of greases. Some of us also like to put a velcro strap at the "full throttle" end, to simulate throttle detent but that's irrelevant in Elite as we don't have an "afterburner" setting. Anyway, head over to ED (Eagle Dynamics) forums and look around there, you will probably find more info on lubing HOTAS systems that you'd need, including a TWCS teardown ;-)

I use the full range setting with a significant deadzone, but never any grease. That setting and a big thruster deadzone on that little joystick made it a lot easier to work with.

Another vote for Nyogel 767A here. It's a night vs day improvement. Before that I re-greased with white lithium grease, which isn't as good but is still a huge improvement. The grease that the throttle ships with is very grabby as you have noticed.

By far the most highly recommended lubricant is Nyogel 767a. I bought a 10g tube from Oveready:

Which is fine but it is very expensive.

Try Hetman No. 8 slide grease for Trombones!

One application on my TWCS well over a year ago and problem solved :)

You can apply this from the top without taking anything apart.

As above, I wouldn’t squirt it in but you don’t need alot of grease or oil. It can be applied through the top to the rails with a suitably flexible finger.

Thanks. Been thinking about ‘lubin’ up my hotas’ :) for a while. It’s a relief to hear it can be done without opening it up.

Edit: that sounds so wrong :D

The problem with the TWCS isn’t really a lack if lubrication. If you clean the rails and put fine oil on the problem gets worse.

The problem is the material design which allows the runners to grab the rails.

Nyogel and the slide grease are damping greases which make a barrier to this. Really they increase the friction but prevent the grabbing so make the movement smooth.

The problem is getting it evenly on to the top of the rail, no matter how flexible the finger.
