Ships Type 8 worse for mining than the Python?

i use a type 9 for laser mining. i have 5 of the special mining lasers:
A pre-Engineered Class 1 Mining Laser with Long Range, reduced Distributor Draw, and Incendiary Rounds Experimental Effect named "Modified Mining Laser" can be purchased from the Human Technology Brokers at Zetian's Recall in LTT 198. Note that LTT 198 is permit locked by Torval Mining Ltd.
(
note you have to do quests for Torval Mining Ltd in an adjacent system to unlock LTT 198)
they work really well have double the range and half the draw
i use 2 - 5A collector limpet controllers and also 2 - 3B collector limpet controllers (5A and 3B have the same limpet ranges)
and a 3A prospector limpet controller
2 class 8 cargo racks and a 6A shield
power plant and distro are 6A
it has power forever. 4 pips in weapons i can jack asteroids quickly. never overheats. never run out of juice.

this setup works really well for me for laser mining. i take it out in the black with me on my carrier.

i would not use my type 8 because less cargo capacity and i am not worried about landing pads

the only reason to use a type 8 would be if you have a special spot inside the bubble where you need to dock to an outpost with only medium pads

Based on this thread I got a Type-8 for mining instead of my Type-9, because I don't fill up the cargo capacity of the Type-9 anyway so I might as well have less cargo capacity and a ship with more agility etc.

I couldn't get it to work. The problem is that I mostly laser mine, but I do want the gear needed for abrasion, subsurface, and core mining, and the Type-8 doesn't have enough hardpoints for all that unless you skimp on laser ...which is my bread&butter. The best I can fit for laser mining is three class-1 lasers, which is painfully slower than the T9's two class-2 lasers, and even those aren't as fast as I would like. On top of that, the improvement in ship speed and agility is noticable but not night&day however the pain from the slower laser mining is very very noticeable 😢

I really like the appearance and cockpit and sightlines of the T8, but I'll have to ditch the core-mining gear if I want to use it (which I guess is fair; a medium ship shouldn't be able to keep up with a large ship at gear-hauling.

So for now I'm back in the T9...

(And naturally I'm not finding any core rocks, so all this sacrifice to keep core-mining gear on hand with me is all for nothing anyway! 😅 )

I think the conclusion is that you should use the Python for mining rather than a T8, and the T8 makes a better hauler. You can fit everything you want to the Python, but if money is your goal, you should fit only 3 class 2 lasers and go mine platinum in Paesia haz RES.

If you don't want to stay until you full with 500+ tons, an Anaconda is better in all respects than a T9. The Anaconda mines 33% faster, has 5 times the shield strength, is 25% faster and has 25% more jump range.

Core mining is 2 species and 4 upgraded miner lasers ...
