Type 9 or Type 10 for mining

Im brand new to the game, having only finished my first mining run yesterday. I have been playing maybe 3 weeks off and on. I want to work towards a mining ship that can haul serious weight, I like those big payoffs.

I also like the big, burly utilitarian look of the Type 9 and Type 10. I know there are other meta builds that seem to be more popular but i just want to use those ships. Can anyone who uses or has used one or both of these ships let me know if you have a preference? Also builds would be much appreciated!

I have only laser mined so far and thought it was pretty entertaining (my previous "occupation" was exploration, not the most hands on) but I havent core mined yet. I imagine I will try both.

Thanks CMDRs o7

If you want to be able to haul more, then take the T-9. It has the second highest cargo capacity of any ship in the game, and doesn't require rank (unlike the cutter). However, you may have to sacrifice some room for limpets, controlers and so forth, as well as a refinery. The T-9, when fully kitted out with mining tools, also has no ability to defend itself beyond its shields. If you want to make it to a market alive to sell your goods (because pirates), then you may prefer a T-10, for its four extra Class-3 weapon slots, to help get you out of stick situations, however, the T-10 has around two-thirds of the T-9s cargo capacity, so it is less suited to big hauls. Honestly, its up to you. You might go T-9, T-10, or Vulture if that's what seems good. I would probably take the T-10, just because of its defensive capabilities, but that's just me.
Hope this was slightly helpful.

Thanks for the tips! As rule I only play on open to add that element of risk, the T10 might save a haul from less well equiped CMDRs trying to pirate! Im glad you recommended it, it is kind of awesome looking!

You may find other CMDRs in your hotspot but that's unlikely. I think Trotsky will be referring to the NPC pirates that religiously come and bother you every time you first start the instance. It's not an issue at the start as they'll buzz off after they scan you and find nothing in your hold except limpets. It can be an issue later on if you have to log back in.

Oh i gotcha...so live player pirates are not as common I guess
Depends on where you go. If you mine at the hotspots that are discussed in them miner's reddit or published on miner's tool, be prepared for player interference. Some may be after your cargo, others simpy after your life.
If, on the other hand, you do your mining in quiet spots that are not talked about publicly, you'll be pretty much on your own - until you drop into one of the known (see above) high sale spots to sell your haul.

I use a type 10 for mining. Mainly because of the type 9's abysmal MLF, which means even a Python can mass lock it.

Also because i sitll have enough cargo space and limpets for a good long session mining before i want to hand stuff in. Sometimes even that is too much. Most of the time when i used to mine in a type 9, i'd never actually fill the cargo hold before i needed to call it a night.

Thats what i was thinkingi will probably not be able to fill all of that cargo. Just did my first long jump sequence to find premium prices across the bubble and got jumped by npc pirates. Almost blew up! Im ready for the Type 10 already. Just bought a python to get me the rest of the way to my type 10 build.

You mean the tiny little Cobras that think they can stand against my Corvette? I always found it funny how I can be flying along, and then a tiny Cobra (defenseless for all intents and purposes) interdicts me and demands my cargo "in exchange for my life".

Morons ;)

I have both, but i actually prefer the T10 because it is more manoeuvrable in tighter asteroid fields. Downside you don't carry as much, but i get bored after a few hours and by then i've probably filled up the T10. Plus it can protect itself. If you want tonnage, go T9, but beware, you are a big target and you come close to shedding tears when it blows up with a full load.

Mining in open just isn't a good idea.At least join a pve group like Mobius if you need interaction.Mining is a task not an adventure.

Best thing is to buy a second ship, fitted for combat, and with enough cargo capacity, park that second ship in the system where you do the mining, or near, do the mining, jump back & fast at the parking place, switch ships, and do the travel part at the best market using the combat ship. I use this strategy since my early days in Elite, because:

1 - a fully fitted & optimized ship for mining will sacrifice all for that purpose - no fuel scoop, no FSD booster, no cell banks, no hull reinforcement modules, hell, even 2 weapons slots less.... so yeah, not a combat ship and for sure not a great jumping ship...

2 - is really frustrating when you worked hard to fill that ship with cargo worth some good millions ( a T9 can hold easily 500-600 tons of Painite, and that is 350-500 millions !) and you need to get to that market 200 ly away, and every single NPC will jump you... and you lose that ship AND the cargo because you did not plan well the whole thing !

3 - So, you ended the mining process, get out and jump at the place where you parked the combat ship ( a Conda, or a Vette, best scenario, a Cutter, etc, but anyway something with a big jump range, fuel scoop AND good shields and weapons. Switch the ship. Make the trip in the armored truck, not in a convertible Mazda !

If you lack the credits for such a setup, just stop at a big starport and at least change the mining fitting with a combat / long range jump fitting ( add the fuel scoop, best shield, FSD booster, weapons, etc,) BEFORE you make the run for the market...
