Type, Copy & Paste from Laptop to Xbox

Howdy.

On my old Xbox One I could have the the Xbox Console Companion app open on my laptop when playing ED, and whenever I selected a text entry box on the galaxy map etc I was able to use the laptop's keyboard to input directly into ED.

I now have a shiny new Series X. Yay. But this doesn't work any more. Boo.

The Console Companion app seems only to recognise the Xbox One by default, it can't see the Series X unless I manually enter its IP address. It then sees it, but the app no longer reacts when I select a text entry box. There's a newer Xbox app on the Windows app store, also the Xbox Game Bar app, but unless I'm missing something obvious neither of these pass keyboard input to the Xbox.

A USB keyboard works, but I miss being able to copy & paste system names from Inara etc directly into ED. Yep, first world problems and all that, I know.

Does anybody out there in the ED hive mind know of another method to get the Series X/S to recognise keyboard input from a PC on the same network?

Xbox app on your phone. Click at the top right, open remote control, click the keyboard bottom left, profit.

The W10 version doesn't do it anymore. It's harder to copy/paste on the phone, but you can still do it from your browser. Just not quite as convenient (or more convenient, depending on your point of view). I wish there was an option for both.

I have windows running in a VM on my MacBook, and the xbox companion app installed in windows, connected to my series X no problem. When there was the CG for the Ammonia world scans, I went into galaxy map on xbox, selected the textbox for destination, up popped the textbox on the companion app, copy/paste from Spansh, done.

Edit: Just tried again, no changes in my system since last time (apart from perhaps insiders firmware on xbox) and doesn't work now.

Have you tried opening Inara, using Edge, on the Xbox selecting the text you want using the controller (text you can copy is indicated by a scissors button) and then switching back to Elite and pasting in the selected text using your keyboard?

It's a pain but it's the method I use on my XBox One S for Inara and Spansh.

I'm sure there's a very perfectly good reason for Microsoft to take a convenient feature away from users. Microsoft knows best...

Thanks, I'll give that a go

The way I solved this was to buy a mini wireless keyboard with a dongle, works a treat.

Very frustrating, I only discovered this feature a couple of months ago and it was an amazing quality of life changer.

I know that we can use Edge on xbox to copy/paste but that's clunky using a web browser with a controller and not very immersive switching in and out of the game on the console. I also know we can have a keyboard on the xbox, I have one, and I also have a chatpad. Neither are as elegant, as typing in long system names rather than copying and pasting, is a PITA.

Hope MS sort it out. Backward step.

If Microsoft made cars, they'd suddenly make the right pedal the brake and the left the accelerator because they'd decided that's a better way of doing things.

And if you got a new stereo the headlights would stop working.

And every year it would get 10% slower.

And it'd take ten minutes to start every morning.

ok I'll stop now
