Typing In VR - Help Please

Hi all,

I have recently started to use my Rift and it is awesome to be fair but I am not too keen on removing it to type etc.

Is there an app that can be used with Voice Attack for putting in star system names etc just by speaking?

Thanks in advance.

VA has a command internally that allows you to dictate text inputs. I haven't set it up/used it myself yet.

For me is easy. I conly need to locate 3 keys: Space, Enter and left control. Once my hands are in position, I can type eyes closed.

I just typed this sentence eyes closed just to prove my point :D :D

If you can learn to touch type you will find that three keys have a tactile marker. Keys "F", "J" and numeric pad "5" have some form of tactile indicator to help you know where your fingers are when not looking at the keyboard.

Peek down the nose gap. It took me a little getting use to but can now type almost as well as I can without my Rift on.

OP. It's challenging, especially if you have Rift fitted prescription lenses and have to leer at the keyboard/monitor every time you have to type.

I tend to lift up my Rift, rather than take it off and I often copy and paste system names from inara to enter system names into the galaxy map.

Just use Oculus Dash, it has an onscreen keyboard. If you launch Elite from Oculus Home don't even have to leave your cockpit. No need for any peeking down the nose gap or touch typing anymore.

I have the same issue and use all of the suggested “fixes” so far. If only more people used the voice coms it would largely remove the issue. I know some have had problems with it and use 3rd party apps etc.
I have even considered a small usb camera mounted on the rift and one of the screen overlay options out there to place the view in the ship when needed. No more people sneaking up on me etc.

What exactly is wrong with using the onscreen keyboard provided by Dash? It's a feature many requested in this very forum and Oculus has now provided, yet these threads still crop up.... It honestly boggles the mind. If you don't like the Dash keyboard just download any touch keyboard app and pin that.

Maybe they don't know about it or they are running a marginal VR setup and are afraid that it will kill the performance...

Please don't assume that everyone knows everything. I would not have asked if I had known about the "Dash" as I just use the Oculus app to launch ED and don't use it for anything else.

See my earlier post when I tell you about it.....Besides, I wasn't actually speaking to you or directly about you in my last post.

There is a massive thread about Dash right here that tells you about the functionality it adds.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/393923-Oculus-Dash-Home-2-0-Experiences-amp-Tips-Thread

Additionally, doing a search against "typing, keyboard" and filtering the results to the VR sub forum provides a list of threads all on this subject, all providing this information or the answers provided by other users for the 100th time in this duplicate thread.

Maybe they don't know about it

In which case they are more than welcome to ask about it...Or simply type "Oculus Dash" into Google and hit the return key.

The biggest issue for me using the Dash keyboard is that I use a HOTAS for ED, and you can only use the Dash keyboard with a Touch controller. So I have to fumble around for the Touch controller and then activate Dash and the keyboard before I can start typing. Then after typing, I have to put the Touch controller down again and grab the joystick. It's just a bit of a faff to have to do this each time.

What would be better is if ED could have a UI keyboard built into the game that allows for navigation and typing using a HOTAS or other controller of choice.

If you don't know about it, how can you ask about it?

You really are not following the thread. My original post told him or anyone else reading this thread about it. That is how....

I also use a HOTAS and using the Dash and it's keyboard presents zero issues. Take a look at the Dash thread, there are easy work arounds for that.

You could also look for keyboard app you can use with a controller, or set the built in one up to do that. You are not limited to the Dash keyboard. The beauty of Dash is that you do not even have to close it, once it's open you can use any app in real time, you just move the Dash UI out of sight, again there are more details in the Dash thread about that and Autofocus.
