Typing In VR - Help Please

Hi all,

I have recently started to use my Rift and it is awesome to be fair but I am not too keen on removing it to type etc.

Is there an app that can be used with Voice Attack for putting in star system names etc just by speaking?

i think voice attack has some speech-to-text feature but can't really comment on it, don't use va.

just dropped in to suggest you learn to touch type. it may be awkward at first but is just a matter of practice and on the bright side you'll learn a new skill that may prove very useful long after you stopped playing elite, so it's definitely a win. also, i'd argue it's the most efficient method currently available.

The biggest issue for me using the Dash keyboard is that I use a HOTAS for ED, and you can only use the Dash keyboard with a Touch controller. So I have to fumble around for the Touch controller and then activate Dash and the keyboard before I can start typing. Then after typing, I have to put the Touch controller down again and grab the joystick. It's just a bit of a faff to have to do this each time.

What would be better is if ED could have a UI keyboard built into the game that allows for navigation and typing using a HOTAS or other controller of choice.

I don’t have touch controllers so it won’t work for me doubly. Some of the ships actually have a keyboard in the cockpit so why not just make it a real one.

I would happily use a third party one if you could get it to stay put on the screen overlaying the fake one in the cockpit.

Turning it off and on is just another button to assign on my hotas set up, that could really do with a few extra buttons already.

It’s good to know it works for the remote and Xbox controller. I have a DK2 (major funds diversion currently) so no remote for me. Not bothered with trying my Xbox controller as it’s just another thing to scrabble around and find. I can nearly touch type, lol
I’ll give the ms kb a try to see how it flys.

What I would really want is to be able to look away and it not follow my view point , I know that some of the overlay type systems cant do that, which kinda dosent work for ED.

Tieing up a keyboard reveal to a command in VA could work as well I guess.

There are so many posible options, it would be nice to see some of the third party apps at least semi supported officially.

I will say it again, you can do just that with Dash. The information is in the Dash thread.... Just configure AutoFocus, then open Dash, and pull out the app you don't want to move and position it where ever you like within your cockpit. Then instead of closing Dash just move the Dash carousel somewhere out of sight, under your seat, behind your seat or above your head - where ever you like really. The app you pulled out will now stay there, you can interact with it at anytime and it will not move, to refocus Elite just move the axis or button(s) you configured in Autofocus. You could even toggle between the two apps with a simple macro script.

How much of a hit does the game take with Dash. I'm very marginal with the GTX 970 and won't be upgrading until later this year. I did get tempted by a GTX 1080 for $549 yesterday..

I've not noticed any hit to be honest, even when leaving Dash on at all times while playing. I get exactly the same FPS with or without it.

Instead of spending a few hours to learn to touch type, you should ask others to do hundreds of hours of design, development, testing and future regression testing!

Touch typing is a life skill. There are free apps to help you learn. Once you can touch type you'll be able to type quickly and accurately enough to be able to use chat during battles without looking at the keyboard. You'll even be able to type a VR display strapped to your face.

Just saying.

Touch typing is no good to me, My keyboard is not close enough and HOTAS is in the way, so not an option In VR i can barley find it let alone type
I dont use the Roccat anymore, but when this is on my lap and im sat back, the keyboard is out of reach for touch typing

You do realise alot of people don't sit at their desk while wearing the rift, right? I've got a recliner chair in the same position as the pilot with the hotas velcro'd on for quick removal. About 8 feet away from my keyboard. We need a better solution.

A wireless keyboard or a usb extension would be a better solution IMHO.

Have any of you who are asking for a virtual keyboard ever typed more than a few characters with a console remote? If you are okay with 5 to 10 characters per minute then it's the solution for you. I'll take words per minute over characters per minute any day.

BTW my tone is coming from being an ex hunt and peck typist. I've been a software developer for twenty years but only taught myself to touch type five years ago using online tools. I always thought it would take longer than it did. So many wasted hours hunting and pecking or wishing I could type during an online game but not being able to...
