U16

I've been waiting for like, seven years for an ice-cream that never comes.

But Daddy Brabus says no each year, and keeps offering kale flavoured ice pops.

Christmas might be cheesy, but it's still a better tradition than whatever you are having. 😝

For me U16 (and the latest patch) seems to be there to make installing Legacy more of a pain in the butt, apparently now you have to install 4.0 first then legacy to access legacy. If this keeps up it will be easier to play ED by turning on me XBox :ROFLMAO::unsure:

F🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 apple auto correct! I hate that. Yeah, a lot of people are saying it’s an elite killer. They were saying that about NMS too. We’ll have to wait and see. However, it’s too late to change course and make U16 and 17 not about the thargoids. As Arf and Sally have said in Lave Radio, these updates have been planned and been in development for months, they can’t shelve that to try and shoehorn something else in. It’s like changing course in a oil tanker.
I know, trouble is months ago in the chair FD could have been discussing a lot of things, not just Goids. To me this is history repeating, as its the same when Sandro was inches away from updating Powerplay and then all hell breaks loose behind the scenes and EDs 'wilderness' period.

I don't want this to be a stats thread, but ED is now regularly below 5K, while the colourful game is constant at nearly double that and rock solid. So to me, FD need to pull something significant out of the bag otherwise features such as Powerplay, more BGS level stuff will have fewer and fewer eyes (which need a large playerbase to work and not be a slog).

I mean, why not have U16 as a piracy update? Have makeovers for anarchy stations, NPC mission givers etc? Why not have a ships update? Swap around some numbers for the Asp Scout, T-7, & FAS, add seats to the FGS, add in some new SLFs (which would not be as disruptive)? The Thargoid content is good, the problem is its distracting from a holistic problem ED has had for about 5 years and thats the core game is creaking like an old guy opening a squeaky door while walking across wonky floorboards. If these underlying issues were sorted out, you would then have a really, really good RNG closed loop forever game that lives up to the proc gen promise. As it stands you have a deeply flawed core that has a highly polished alien blasting portion.

Because they wouldn’t be able to code that in time. We don’t know what really is in update 16 but we all suspect it’s more thargoid war. As much as I’d love to see a Powerplay update, it won’t pullback old players who left due to the odyssey problems. I do feel that the Glave needs looking at but people are really hoping for on-foot thargoids at some point.

That sounds like a lot more than FD can actually deliver with these updates. The new Hunter variant and some new AX modules/weapons will probably be the highlight features for U16 imho.

A balance update is not hard to actually do though in time terms- its more of a case of avoiding making things too bad / strong. And if you can create a BGS 'module' for a Thargoid AI its not too crazy to do the same for more pirate centric missions, assets etc in an update.

We are still waiting for several ships to be shown love, the seemingly abandoned engineering pass- all things that are swapping numbers and deleting entries.

The frustrating part is FD got it right first time and somehow went crazy and threw that all in the bin. Engineering was right with rare modules (before 'full' engineering was introduced). Certain POIs such as pirate flocks, wings of more than 4 and certain BGS states like lockdown were great. Murder was great, UAs etc. For example: if these modules had been kept and expanded, you could have had engineer like tech brokers but without the grind, no bottlenecks for new guys, no need for ATR (since engineering was and still is OP) and been easy to balance (since the effects are of the scope of experimental effects- i..e mild). This would have made C+P work (not requiring the frankly silly changes) and saved a massive amount of time.

They dont need to do much expand PP to accomodate more open conflict and pirates can pick the spoils of that conflict from supply transports etc. Fdev could expand the NPC AI and communication so we can ask for cargo than the murder to get it system we have now. Its not a major change just have a multiple choice whell when asking other players/NPCs this also helps overcome the language barrier as everyone will see the phrases translated into their native tongue 🙂

Let's be honest, there's an enormous amount of things that could be done, too many to list and they've all been said before, over and over.

And there's a $%£@ ton of stuff I'd love to see; again, too much to list and yes, again, it has all been said before, over and over.

I suppose the reality is that this game is eight (?) years old - and that's quite the age in games - so we're limited to how much time, money and effort FDev can actually put into it all.

Like I said in my reply to Phoenix, unless there is some strange Cobra stuff going on a massive balance pass is editing properties- just tweaking numbers and loosening rules would unleash a lot of currently constrained potential too (as in a lot of exciting BGS 'bugs' livening up things like CZs- in the past I've had then next to stations, in asteroid belts, refugee POIs appearing in them, and so on). If you make the core RNG proc gen stuff less rigid you'd make more of the game fun and fresh beyond introducing a new Goid (nice as that is) people will eventually become numb to.

Suggestion:

Make this one epic with awesome sauce.
Won't happen, because this:
Please add something for those commanders that are not interested in the Thargoids at this time.
won't happen either. Meanwhile:

Just came back after a 2 years brake to pump those Steam charts up.

Now, I'm placing all my hope in U16.

It must be EPIC (I don't care about the sauce though) and fix all the problems that haven't been adressed since Odyssey dropped or the Steam charts will lose 1 player count.

Though, of course, one of the major criticisms Frontier gets regularly is that it has a tendency to release a basic feature, then if it isn't an instant hit, assume that's due to lack of interest in the concept rather than the implementation not being solid enough (CQC, multicrew, criminal activities, etc.) and leave it in that state permanently.

The initial U14 release of the war was a pretty big hit - going back to that with additional balancing, more variety of scenarios, and some tuning of the strategic layer I think makes sense, even if it doesn't translate immediately into increased player numbers.
When the war began (update 14), the main feeling from AX pilots was "Great, they've realized limiting AX CZ appearances to a couple of incursions per year is bad and have finally made them available constantly."

Now 6 months later, look where we are; zero invasions for the past 3 weeks and a war being won by tissue sampling. What a great balancing job they've done.

Yes. Both points, I think, where the balancing required isn't straightforward, either - because there are two groups of people involved in the war; loosely, the ones who want to fight it and the ones who want to win it (or at least believe that they could win it) - and they have very different requirements.
