Okay, I have gotten to CD-86 4 and have docked up at Cummings Dock for a quick refuel and restock of some heat sinks. Fell into a Star along the way, though I'm sure it never used to be there :p

This cmdr is also grabbing a cup of tea and a snack but I'll be exploring this system for the forseeable few hours. On the way in I noticed nothing unusual. The star is bright, lots of landable moons. USS seemed to be Emissions (threat 0) and weapons fire (threat 4). That's my initial comment.

Ok folks new theory:

Ambient sounds can help detect systems or areas of Alien influence.

Take a listen to the ambient sounds uploaded here. This was recorded minutes ago, in my ASP in Merope. Only a few hundred Ls from the main star. I raised the volume of the recording using an online tool by 10 Db's, but it might still sound quite low to you so you may have to crank up the volume of your speakers a bit to hear all the little details:

Merope Ambient Sounds

At the start you will hear me come to a full stop in my ASP, then make sure my sensors are turned off (they produce a very rhythmic bass sound otherwise) and then turn off my thrusters. Then start listening closely. You will hear the background ambient sounds, very subtle, quite calm. In between you'll start hearing familiar sounds. Suspicious and subtle. Then metallic sounds will start popping up here and there, distinct and almost rhythmic. Those will continue to pop up untill the end of the recording.

Especially pay close attention to:
01:25 - 01:32
02:08 - 02:15
02:38 - 02:44

You will hear static very similar (if not identical) to the Unknown Probe Discovery Scan Response. I have not had much time to test but you can hear similar (if not the same) ambient sounds in systems all over up to 300 LY from Merope. However if you are in the human inhabited bubble and populated systems, you will not hear this. Instead you will hear radio chatter. According to a friend, a fellow knight Cmdr Dpjon who is mid way to Jacques station said that he could hear no ambient sounds whatsoever when he turned off his thrusters and sensors. If you are far away from the bubble you may not hear any ambient sounds at all. This needs confirmation though.

Can someone please run one of those sound analysis and a spectrograms to see if we get anything similar from these?

Also I experienced something else that seemed weird to me. While I was listening looking for UA's in HIP 14479 (150 LY from Merope), I found one, jumped into the SS. I destroy the UA, scoop up the Unknown Fragment and immediately a wing of 3 System Authority Ships popped in to scan me for illegal goods. The problem is that the system is NOT populated and it is an ANARCHY system! WTH is System Authority Ships with no factions doing there? Could these be the guys that are carrying around the UA's and UP's in their armored convoys? *equips tinfoil helmet +5* Here is a screenshot:

Can I point out that im pretty sure that system is a player minor faction. you can pick any description for your system if FD allows it.

Mini update on CD-86 4;

The local system news sources don't mention any unusual sightings or events, they seem preoccupied detailing the political and economic moves of the different factions, as you can expect. A few break out into open war but nothing hugely unusual.

The station is decently equipped and the shipyard is fairly nice. They offer up to and including the Imperial Cutter, so it might be a nice place for people to gain some Empire rankings if/while they are here.

I'm going to switch out of my Corvette and into something a little smaller and more agile, just in case of danger. Thinking an Imperial Courier due to the generous amount of mid-slots.

I swear if that's all it is then I am going to be so bummed out. I feel silly :(

There's one Player faction, but CD-86 4 isn't their home, LURP Ship Systems. Their home is Psi Octantis.

Then there's the slightly more generalised "Imperial Party". If that's a player-faction, I'm disappointed the name was allowed, but they're there. Don't know if that's player-run or not.

All the others seem to be the usual proc generated stuff.

I think this fits into this thread.
Anyone an idea what i found here in deep space?

While exploring in deep space i hear a strange signal. I didn't notice it first and thought of a interference from my sound card or something. Then i noticed it must be from the game. And suddenly the signal breaks with a disconnect sound. Did someone or something try to contact me?
I didnt find anything and it didn't repeat.
Spooky.

I found some similar noise on youtube from someone else here

I have been thinking, what if there is a connection between local news articles, states and up sightings.

Bear with me, but if you look back through the local articles in a system where UP have been confirmed, are there any similarities? It could go something like this-

An article that says how a war may be coming, "shadowy forces", faction spokesman states"we have defenses" but doesn't say what.

An article saying war has been started because of a military convoy being attacked and the cargo that was stolen no one will say.

When I was grinding my way towards palin in and around Sirius, I noticed a ton of these articles. May be more to it and when I get a chance I will get the exact articles if I can. Then again it may be nothing at all, but it could be easily disproved if the local articles in the places where UP have been confirmed are not the same.

Merope was overall quite empty. 5C and 2A no big ships or SSC like the convois etc. Checked HIP 14479, only UA encounter, they droped 2 Unknown fragments with are 6 Items in the list. So its quite easy to get the 25 Unknown Fracs for Palin.

So far nothing of scientific interest at CD-86 4, several degraded, a few high grade, and a few encoded. Some higher grade materials, but other than that... searched for around an hour.

Ok now I'm really starting to think there may be something to these ships popping in, 3 strange encounters from 3 different people. Could just be my tinfoil getting crinkly but the more of these ships that show where they shouldn't be is starting to convince me something is up. Or it could just be a sort of game bug. Annoying not knowing when something is relevant or just a glitch in the game :/

Yeah nothing here either. I suspect the explanation that a player minor faction has set that description may be the truth. Such a shame, felt quite exhilarating for a moment there. Related to UPs or not I kinda just hoped a system with that description would actually have something unusual to see.

I have found that what I hear depends on what is currently in my viewport. Planets and stars, the Magellan clouds, the center of the Milky Way and various nebulas all create distinct and separate soundscapes when the exterior camera is directed at them. Looking toward the center of the galaxy, for example, there are some very weak and (possibly) glyph-like sequences on the spectrogram between 1000 and 1400 Hz every few seconds, as well as quite a lot of other sounds, including those in your sound sample. (It might not be the galactic centre making these noises though, but rather the populated bubble around Sol or something else nearby, since that's in the same direction from here outside of Barnard's Loop.)

However, I do not think I've ever heard silence. Not even from the intergalactic void.

I haven't tested whether we can actually use our ears as long-range scanners, but it wouldn't be all that surprising given how deep the sound design is. Maybe barnacle-infested nebulae actually sound like them from a distance?

So, I went back to merope 2a, and the farragut is just gone. There's no ships, no turrets, nothing. Can someone else come out here and confirm that it's not there for them? I would post a screenshot but for some reason the forums aren't letting me upload anything so I'll put a gyazo link to it.

Maybe the farraguts are the way FD is telling us the appropriate timing to be there?
