Strong energy emitters, like neutron stars, pulsars and variable stars all produce antimatter. It's even produced in our atmosphere during lightning. The nebula provides a sort of stellar atmosphere.
The Crab nebula is our prime example: http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblo...-the-day-crab-nebula-reveals-its-secrets.html
No, the Crab is only a good example not because it's a nebula, but because it has a pulsar at its center. A nebula without such an astrophysical phenomena at its core would not produce the results you claim. In addition, since we're talking specifically about the Crab Nebula now and not nebulae in general, I will point out to you that the 'antimatter' you're referring to is a positron, but not just that--it's half of an electron/positron pair generated by the mechanics of the pulsar itself, which very quickly annihilates into gamma radiation rather than separating into distinct electrons and positrons.

Since it's indicative of pulsar action in general and in no way specific to the Crab, assuming in the first place that your premise that the Probe's creators can harvest and utilize positrons from the origin of a Pulsar's jet before it becomes gamma rays...don't you think there would be plenty of other places to 'gas up'?

Morning everyone!

Not entirely relevant but I was watching a program on TV last night which featured a Bronze Age artefact known as the Nebra Sky Disk.

Those 7 dots clustered together near the top represent the Pleiades. Pretty cool huh?

A promising theory for the UP- see #5148 et seq

I like that idea. It at least has a backbone to it, even if it ends up being untrue, though I think it is the best we have so far.

I was going to throttle you if I searched for that post and it was somebody simply going ''Guys, I think it's a decoder ring.'' again :p

Good morning/evening fellow sentient beings.

I have spent quite a bit of time searching Merope 5c in my trusty SRV, and having a great time of it... finding lots of wreckage and rocks. Lots and lots of rocks...
... so many rocks ...

*ahem*

I have been over a few candidate sites and not picked up anything out of the ordinary, but I am starting to wonder if we will find anything by just landing and scanning. To explain, I have a theory about the interaction between UA, UP and us.

The UA scanned our ships, so it knows our configuration, and I speculate transmitted that information to Merope 5c. The UP are then sent from Merope to find us. (ie: we are being probed  but some of us don't mind that sort of thing.)

So when the UP encounters a pilot, the pilot honks, which the UP regards as "hello". The UP then responds with a message which contains a map with directions. So we assume the message is "go here" or "something important is here".

We go there and find nothing, but maybe we are not doing it right. What if the message is not "go here" but "take me here".

I am concerned that our SRV may only detect whatever the UP is pointing to if it is in our cargo hold. Like some sort of custom signal processor needed to detect whatever it is.

I could be driving around and over it, and never see it.

Congratulations you have Ranked Up your Tinfoil level to Expert

That sky disc is going to end up Elite's Godwin's law of tinfoil

Yarp - many people have been playing with that picture, trying to rationalise the Probes output to it.

Quick aside: I finally met all the check boxes to meet Engineer Qwent. I have the Sirius permit, I am in Sirius, I have the 25 Modular Terminals ready...

... but Sirius Corp won't send an invite to me. Is this normal? I can find posts about the Sirius Permit itself being bugged but not the Qwent invite so I feel like I'm doing something wrong.

How am I ever going to interroga-... discuss the UAs and UPs with Palin if I can't get through this guy first? :p

Have you actually done the Elvira Martuuk levelling first? You won't get an invite for Qwent without it...simply knowing he is there isn't good enough.

I think it always gives a different sequence, but the content of that sequence is always the same. Basically each time the message repeats, there will always be two instances of 100, for the 2 barnacle planets, although they might be in a different order.
I can't see how this explanation can be possible. Like someone else asked, and I have asked RiZ@L previously; How do you know when the sequence starts? You cannot do this by picking a random 6 minute segment in the audio. The only way to know which segment to use is to have two identical sequences of purrs, or a clear start and end point of the message. Unless you have one of those two, the "message" will change based on where your arbitrary start value is.
The latest recordings of the UPs are short, so there is no way to extract more than one 6 minute segment from them. The recordings also start about 1 minute after the UP is initially dropped, due to manoeuvring by the pilot to set up the Classified Camera. So there is atleast 30 seconds of audio from the UP that we don't know what is, and even one HIGH or LOW Purr prior to your start will shift everything and change your result completely.

I think this is a very interesting theory, but at the moment it seems like a forced result. With a Free Floating UP with "unlimited" time to record it's possible to check this, but we don't have those. Another way to test is as mentioned here, take the UP to a single star[/] system, with no other elements in the star system. By your theory, it should then repeat one 3-bit Purr pattern, and one Purr pattern only. If it doesn't, your theory then needs to be ammended to "it sends the pattern of the star system we should be focusing on, not the one it is in", which brings us back to needing a Free Floating UP to check a longer audio recording.

Sorry, I am not buying stock in this theory yet, but I like the work and thought behind it.

Yup, done it all. I have been given the knowledge of him AND I am allied with Sirius Corp. I got the Sirius permit and am now there. The next stage says I will be given an invite to him but only from their home system, Sirius. This is the part that is not working.

Actually, you get Quent invite regardless the Sirius permit state as far as I know after leveling up with Martuuk.

I can't remember where, but all I did at that point was check in systems that has Sirius Corp as the controlling faction and looked at the bulletin boards there...I *believe* I found mine in Luyten's Star (from memory), but any should have the same chance. Might take a board refresh or two.

That's true, but you need the Sirius system permit to be able to get to him, sooo... :p

That should appear as a mission in the BB, isn't it?
