UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

Yes, just as likely. In fact more likely based on probability.

Please consider the possibility that the UAs are pointing to Merope for a different reason than barnacles. UAs pointing = clue 1. Barnacles will lead to clue 2. Michael knows we are well aware that the UAs point to Merope. He also knows that people have been searching the hell out of Merope for the entire beta, the entire holiday break, and every day since. Over 2 months. If they hand placed barnacles in Merope and that's why the UAs were pointing there, do you really think he would feel the need to come on here and give us a clue?

If anything, the clue is meant to tell us to search the whole nebula and stop searching just in Merope!

If they were in Merope, his clue would be "Keep doing what you've been doing. You'll find them eventually. You've just been incredibly unlucky since the beginning of horizons beta."

We haven't actually searched Merope as much as you'd think, people gave up on it pretty quickly back at the start, and not everyone was looking for fixed POI's. A few weeks ago the general consensus was "If you don't find them within 10-20 POI's they're probably not there since the in game description says "common in some parts of space"" searches lasted some hours, but were not overly extensive. The searching for fixed POI's happened at the start for a little while, but only about as long as we have been searching so far in this big Barnacle hunt.
Since then a lot of people have taken a "oh well everyone is already searching/ has already searched merope so I won't bother" (myself included for a while)

The problem is without actually recording who has searched where and for how long we can't actually say "Merope has been thoroughly searched" because we don't know that.

Also MB came along to confirm Pleiades because at that point pretty much everyone had gone "well we've looked there and they aren't there", or "no way Barnacles and UA's are related" and he came long to say "no they are you just didn't look hard enough"

Okay, how much of Merope has been searched and by who? I think everyone is overestimating how much ground has been covered in Merope, but honestly neither you or I know if that's true. I'm suggesting starting there, as it's a likely suspect, and actually tracking how much we've searched. As I. Nova has suggested we should organize and I think Merope is a good place to get organized if only to eliminate it as a suspect. If there aren't barnacles in Merope then there may be a clue in Merope we missed (clue 2 as you suggest), that will lead to the actual system/planet we're looking for.

NetSlayers spreadsheet is a good start and I think could really help us eliminate planets and systems quickly, so it's not just individual commanders wandering around planets without coordination.

Snaked by squiggsy on that one.

Unless we count that there are 7 planets in Maia, the 7th of which is landable... maybe not the moons of Merope, but referencing something else as 7 sisters?

If it's possible to find these things from the air, and you're searching canyons, put your gamma to maximum and explore the dark side. Daytime shadows render big patches completely invisible if there's dust in the air whereas with the gamma up you can see these areas clearly once the sun is out of the picture.

I'd left myself over an interesting patch of canyons when I logged out last night and it was day when I got back. I couldn't believe how much less I could see. I actually waited in the same spot while the sun went down below the horizon (it's not quite there yet but it's now low enough not to cast shadows on the terrain I'm above) and I can now see the cliffs perfectly whereas I couldn't see them at all half an hour ago.

Currently exploring Atlas B3. Found tech remains (humans) including what appears to be a piece of a cargo canister... scanner registers typical WHOOP of technological signal but nothing... not a target or anything. Anyone else have that happen?

I was around ATLAS earlier, I am sure its a graphical glitch but loads of rocks on one of the landable planets had green glows round their base where the shadows should be. Shot at them from SRV and ASP neither did dmg to any.

Anyone know where the nearest starport with a functional outfitters is, I want to try an idea out, Obsidian Orbital has no Outifitting and Shipyard as we all know.

Thanks

Add CMDR Harry Potter, I have a corvette I can help with tomorrow or Monday if you on, send me a friend request and we can sort something out.

That's me flying along the day/night line of Merope 5C. If you look to the right, you can see the thin layer of volatile gases quite prominently along the surface - toward the night side on the left, however, it becomes less and less visible.

My question is: is that just becoming less visible in the darkness, or is that layer of gas only present on the day side, because the sunlight is what's causing it to sublimate out of the rock?

I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. I don't really see the "foggy" effect on the night side of any of these moons, but I can't tell if it's a really cool level of science in the simulation, or if it's just a graphical coincidence.

I've got a hunch that our new Barnacle friends want these volatile gases, hence trying to understand where/how they occur.

I spent a couple of hours exploring the surface of Atlas B 1 last night.

Didn't find anything too fancy. A couple of multi-storey settlements, plus some debris that had, amongst other things, a "Cargo Rack" item - selectable as a target in its own right. I tried to scoop it, to get extra SRV cargo storage capacity, but that didn't work, lol.

You can shoot them open and they have containers inside them of random minerals.

Hate to say it I'm currently enjoying going all Airwolf on the canyons and I will need to ratchet it back up in the name of science.

STILL..... I did have an interesting situation trying to make landfall on one of the Pleiades Sector planets... someone mentioned that they lost control of the ship coming in off of orbital cruise. Had the same thing happen to me too. Went into glide and the controls were very jittery centered the stick toward a nice -20 degree easy fall and the ship was wobbling back and forth. If I didn't know any better I'd say that was turbulence but there is no air out here so I'm not sure what was going on. I managed to get control of it and land without incident but it was all very odd.

Currently on Merope 5C and just found what seems to be a small base.
Going in :p

I also just had that jittery blue zone before I landed on Merope 5C..
