UAs, Barnacles & More Thread 5 - The Canonn

Hello my fine explorer friends! How has today's search been?

Sadly I cannot join you tonight but I'm hoping I will be able to for the rest of the week. I also have a week off coming up so *some* of that will be spent in here as well :)

A different approach for the sake of science would be focusing on Earth barnacles and their behavior. Barnacles attach themselves to rocks, ships and whales and filter feed based on their environmental conditions. Disregarding ships and whales typical pier or seaside rock barnacles rely on the tides to feed. When the tide comes up and they are submerged and surrounded by plankton and other things they pop out and eat. When it is low tide and dry they retreat in on themselves and wait for the next tidal turn....

The only thing that comes remotely close to a tide in this game so far is the rise and fall of the mist/dust cycles in the low areas. That really should factor in as a primary search variable for this approach. Secondary and potentially unrelated is the impact of actual tidal foces from a planetary companinon... perhaps metaphorical more so than actual relationship but maybe these barnacles require a moon or something to "tug" at them while they sitting around letting time go by.

Again i recognize we may not be looking for actual barnacles, rather, things that look like them so this may all be simple educated guessing based on the barnacles actually being real.

Just remember, that the video for horizons was not created IN GAME, so it's entirely possible that the star's in the background do not relate to anything at all.

Because it's not an in-game video, the thrusters on the SRV could be just set to a default position. The video would have been made in a separate application.

THis is my Imperial Courier for searching planets. It's the most efficient ship as it can carry everything you need, has the fastest base speed / boost speed for its size, and it very maneuverable with strong vertical thrusters (unlike the Clipper which was my 2nd chouce)

(Couldn't find A sensors at the time, don't think it affects POI detection though as they still appear at the edges of the radar when fully zoomed out)

I picked it over the Asp (Which has good cockpit view) purely for it's speed. Don't need jump range once you're in the nebula.

I see your Courier and raise you a faster, better scooping, and longer ranged Cobra: http://coriolis.io/outfit/cobra_mk_iii/03A4A4A3D3A3D4C1a1a--0d0i480332v62f2i.Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA==

:) She sure is a lot more fun to fly than my Asp was.

Was flying around Maia b1ba the place where pallins base will be some day. Silicate vapour geysers, interesting chemistry after a good read up and could explain the mist but still not found any yet.
Some large peaks all over Maia b1ba , grown several km high over old craters, like some giant mud volcano deposited in layers. Nothing of note found in the POI's but while in orbit the peaks look quite barnacle like.

Not the barnacles were looking for , far too large and MB says theyre small to be not seen from orbital cruise.

That's nice but I'll take a 4LY hit in favor of more guns and a military bulkhead setup... without those you're going to have a tough time with these attackers but also when you'll inevitably bounce the thing off a knoll or terrain feature.

still very repectable setup that range is very nice for it.....

Anyone worked up an Asp Scout yet? I'm curious to see how that works.

As previously mentioned, Pleione 4b 8s well known. The fact that it is apparently now missing along with virtually all previous elite poi indicates to me that fd have abandoned previous lore.
Given that, the chances of them using the same place would be negligible.

Still a cool place to hint though

If there was as small thargiod base in Pleione, which is quit possible as they had a meeting With Mic Turner there. I doubt that base was on Pleione 4.

INRA had a big, fat defence satelite in orbit around 4b. It would not be practical.

IIRC, it was stated during the Horizons launch live stream that the whole video consisted of in game footage. I remember them saying it took a lot of gameplay to capture enough action shots for the trailer...

That's a nice setup, but the best thing about the Courier is that it pretty much weighs the same as an Eagle (35T compared to the Cobras 180T), so you can constantly crash into the ground and not loose shields.

I turned FA off and just watched my ship cartwheel on the ground in a .5G world, only lost 1 bar of shields. Courier accelerates like nothing else with it's power to weight ratio

Has anyone thought about looking at the dark sides of all tidally locked moons FROM the planet that they're tidally locked to? I've been wondering if we might see a glow or shimmer from the opposite planet, especially ones that are really close orbiting.

Has anyone thought that barnacles might be "seasonal", meaning that only when the moons are closest to the sun and the natural materials vaporize under the crust do they come out and propagate? I don't think it has anything to do with the day/night cycle but assume their species grows during specific seasons when temperatures raise.

There is absolutely no way that can be 100% true, the dynamics being shown in the trailer don't happen in game (the swaying of the SRV/s, the bouncing of the docking, etc)

Although I could be wrong.

all kicking off at obsid orbital....

Yea... Making real life threats against other ED players and saying your going to go to their home in RL and hurt them, tends to get you kicked out of the "good" groups. Guy then gave our Discord information out to other groups with a request for them to troll our servers. Yea, ToC must be taking anyone these days ;)

EIC has maybe 10 commanders in the area hunting for dem Barnicles... hit me up on here or in-game if they give you any trouble I'm sure we can rally a few guns to take them out and restore peace to this expedition.

I'm looking at making an Asp scout instead of my Gunship. Gunship is too bulky for the heavy worlds and the cockpit isn't ideal. I've not come up with anything too remarkable yet though.

Ok, after two hours of reading 40+ pages I have to surrender to my bleeding eyes.

Just a word for developer team.

I'm little concerned about players experiencing game crashes near POI's. It happened to me aswell.
I'm mostly worried about client crash related to >>>barnicle<< files.

Given the rarity of barnacle encounters (we didnt find any yet) it won't be easy to report it in the bugs section.
May we have a notification from FDevs that they actually work as intended and there's no known bug?

I'll put the player's post in a spoiler, so ppl will not be bothered and... spoiled

Game crashed again, submitted a ticket to support. (which is in the spoiler)

Looking for Barnacles in my ImperialCourier in Open on Pleione 6 at the pole, sound cut out for 0.3 seconds, frame rate froze, sound resumed for 1.0 seconds then froze for 0.3 seconds again, then game crashed.

These files were being used at the time:

Had ResourceMonitor.exe open to see where or when the below would appear (they never did, so I've given up on the search)

I officially give up looking, it's not worth my time.

In the intrest of morale I for one sometimes think is it worth it... then scenes like this hit you and go "there there it'l be ok... just hang on a bit longer..."

Also do any other Barnacle Hunters fancy an "Apocalypse Now" flight model option ? Where we can have a 20 degree nose down attitude with the windows down, digital binoculars out, just skimming the surface ?

Personally I love the smell of burnt UA in the morning... Keep At it ! o7

If you are engaging vertical thrusters (upwards) and you hit boost then it boosts you forward and up at the same time so that you can skim with your nose down (I'd say at around 20 degrees) while moving over the surface pretty quickly.

I know I've become pretty good at nosing 90 degrees down and balancing with reverse thrust as I try to investigate some POIs, my ASP almost feels like a ballerina

I'd mostly be happy if they added a hotkey to disable pop-up UI elements. I know CTRL-ALT-G disables the entire HUD, but Id rather have a setting that disables left, center, and right from popping-up / flying out as Im trying to look for these things. I could fly inverted to use the ASP's cocking to its best advantage but I just cant stand flying upside down for extended periods

Yep, it works great too. This is how I've been getting around.
