UI Focus toggle

Please add the option to toggle UI Focus.

With freelook I'd like to turn the automatic panel pop-up off with it, and turn it back on for using the panels by looking at them when need. Right now UI Focus seems to be a hold key only.

Is there a way to do this, or am I missing something? I found numerous threads asking for this, but it is still not possible in the game?

Is there a trick maybe? How can I make the UI Focus key a toggle?

I would also love to have the option of having SOME of the panels show up only when I use the UI toggle on my joystick, not when I look at it. Although I'm very happy with automatic pop-up for most of the panels, the downwards panel is a constant offender. I near never need it (only to disembark on planets or change to a foghter), yet it pops up every time I look down. Most of the time I look down, I want to look through those cool windows I got there and get glimpse either at my prey, or the docking pad. This is especially bothersome in VR, where the panel blinks in and disappears like a light with faulty wiring.

So, having the option of the panel only showing up when I engage the down UI focus button would be a great help.

+1 Need a TOGGLE Option, especially handy for VR users who don't have a HOTAS Hat switch and have to rely on a single button, currently keeping it pressed is not the answer, thanks

If they added the toggle option, would you also want to reuse controls in UI Focus mode that you currently use for something else (e.g. power distribution or thrusters)?

ycusteau suggested to use a slider for this, because a slider is a permanent on and permanent off function. So I put it on the slider on my joystick, but problems kinda got serious from there on.

Apparently the UI Focus deactivates functions for no logical reason. You can't access the navigation screens and activate the FSD. In hyperspace the panels still appear if you look at them and from there (but also when getting out of supercruise and glide) they are activated even if the slider is on off position.

Some days ago I made a mistake and crashed into a 2G planet, because as I found out the UI Focus also deactivated the boost. 1,5 years exploration and data gathering around the Galaxy gone. Most would rage right now, I just kindly ask the developers to finally address this issue.

I would also like to see this implemented. The panels popup and block my view at times, especially in ships with mostly glass cockpits, like the Asp and Type 7. A toggle would be fine or if a panel was activated by head-look, the UI key could simply hide the panel temporarily.

+1

Been thinking a lot lately how I would like to be able to keep the core HUD on but disable the side panels for looking around at the views in free-look.

Thanks for the support.

So making the UI Focus a toggle would not be the complete solution, because it deactivates several functions. Such as:

- Ecs key
- Boost
- FSD (I think hyperdrive predominantly)
- Target (I use the hat switch for it, but instead it reactivates the off toggled panels and starts toggling them as I use the hat switch for this too, only with the off toggled panels I obviously don't know I was looking at one)
- Probably more

The panels are also automatically reactivated:

- In hypertravel
- After end of glide and supercruise

So UI Focus seems to be messed up quite a bit, at least for me, but then FD could just give us a dedicated panels on/off toggle that then hopefully does not intervene with any functions.

Would still like to see some sort of Toggle to keep the HUD Windows ON/OFF when looking around in VR, nothing implemented in recent patches so hoping something can be added in future, thanks

I use EDtracker and a HOTAS. I have a button on the throttle set up for UI and I can choose the panel with the HAT switch (even though looking in the direction works as well). When I keep that button pressed the panels don't pop up at all when I look around. Not so much a toggle, I guess, but personally I prefer it that way.

Yeah I've seen others use that method which is fine, but this toggle with VR would be handy for those of us with (Xbox) controllers where we don't have a hat switch.

Exactly the same here (except I'm using TrackIR). It's great for VR too. Although there's no need to use the UI + hat to open the panels (since you still have to turn your head to see them - something which really threw me when I first tried VR), being able to decide whether looking opens panel (UI not pressed) or whether I'm just looking out the window (UI pressed) is very handy. Still agree with thread tho, I'd much prefer a toggle.

press and hold STRG + ALT + g and you have a free UI ;) I saved it in voice attack on a single key.

ok found out that is CTRL :p Thanks for the tip I'll try it out for a bit.

It is one way *but* it removes everything, what would be great is if there was a Toggle to keep the usual stuff at the front that doesn't pop up into view, i.e. On/Off purely for the Left/Right/Center(between legs) & maybe the CHat Box as well - now that would be absolutely perfect for VR :)

We had an update recently, but this is still not being taken care of I see. What else should we do to have this finally being addressed?

I tried an auto hotkey script and could have the UI Focus a toggle, but then I can't fire. I assume it has to do with the Thrustmaster T1600, because when I had the boost on it, it didn't work, but boost works on the FCS throttle. However, the Esc key doesn't react either, while other keys on the keyboard do. So I tricked the system by using keys on the keyboard that I assigned to the stick buttons (pressing joy1 activates numpad key 1 to fire), but then each time I use the trigger to activate stuff in the panels the guns fire, and if I bind the panel activation to the numpad key 1, than I can't fire the weapon again.

When I want to use the hat switches for power distribution and for navigating menus (as it is normally), than with the UI Focus pressed the power distribution doesn't work, instead it starts switching pages in the comm menu even if I don't look at it. Using a slider has all those same problems, because the problem is the UI Focus. If it is held pressed, some things don't work properly anymore, without a reason.

Can't win this, it's infuriating.

I don't know when they added that, but that works great! No more UI blocking the SRV view, let alone the ship view when looking around with Track IR. That absolutely drives me nuts, especially when making a video and trying to show something I see.

I have Voice Attack set now to hold that button when I say "gooey" (for GUI), which hides the side panels, and then let go when I say it again. Thanks!

*edit. However, a real toggle would be even better, as the OP asks.
