I didn't know where to stick this, so I'm adding it here - The admins (I'm sure) can move it to the correct place)
So, this is quite a common problem amongst some players Both Xbox and PC (can't say about PS players)- here is the problem:
I Phoned my ISP yesterday to see if they can run some diagnostics. They found nothing wrong. When the techie asked why, I said I'm having problems with Elite Dangerous...
...he laughed. then said mission board?,
he said we (some other members of the ISP staff) play that too, and since the 3.0 update, for some reason, the mission board has suffered severe packet losses in the UK.
sound familiar (¬_¬)
he also said, try this - set your MTU to "specifically" 1498, no more, no less.
I did this. Now it works.
for testing - I changed MTU to 1500 and the game broke. I changed MTU to 1475 (recommended) and it broke again.
Changed it back to 1498 and the game works again.
I hope this piece of info helps some of you. it's worth a shot

When trying to load the mission board you may get the message "Unable to get an up to date mission list from the server", then shortly after you get kicked from the game with a server connection error. If you do not access the mission board, you're able to play the game for a while. however, this defeats the point really.
