Unable to retrieve data, Storage Full

Hi folks,

I just killed a wanted ship and got this message in my info box. How do I clean out my ship's hard drive? Or what do I do?

I guess I never noticed that I was collecting data so I don't really know what to do with the data now that I've collected it.

Thanks for any help.

No need to do anything. Once a data or material gets filled, the game informs you, and then stops collecting that particular data or material until you use some of it up (by engineering something that requires it).

So, no need to do anything, it's just an informative message.

In the olden days when Horizons was first released, all the data was in one big bucket with a limit (same with materials). Back then you had to keep removing stuff or you had no room for the good stuff that you really wanted. Now that has changed so each type has it's own limit so it's not such an issue.

Find a material trader for data, INARA has a search tool. Go there and trade whichever data you have maxed out, for something else you need or are low on. Whatever material you've maxed out, you are clearly picking up regularly, so to trade it away to half or 25% should be np as you'll be getting more anyways.
Maybe look at data materials required for something you may want to build in the future.

Yes there is something I want to engineer at Felicity Farseer but I can't remember what material I need. I feel like I need to start taking notes.

Thanks everybody for the help.

Oh wow, I found components. If I get these two I can get the next better power plant which seems good.

Then after that page, I see a button that says find material trader. What's strange is I could swear I've been to these stations they say are material traders but I don't remember seeing these materials. But I will go look again. This is interesting.

Just to note, the Materials Trader is a separate office under the Contacts menu. You'll never see engineering materials in the commodity market, since they aren't considered "commodities".

Indeed, as others have said above, you can ignore the message or trade data (more correctly referred to as "Encoded" materials) as you would trade other materials in order to even out your stock. The latter is the better option as collecting materials (be them raw or manufactured, or encoded), is never a bad thing, and being maxed out (see below) for any particular thing is blocking one avenue for that gathering process.

In the discussion below, please forgive me for starting by stating some very basic things that you may well know.

Materials are useful for both buying engineering modifications from engineers and for synthesis - as such it's always worth taking any opportunity for gathering and managing your stocks of the materials so that you have what you need when you require it.

There are three main types of Materials - Raw (Sulphur, Iron, etc.) , Manufactured (Shield emitters etc.), or Encoded (various types of data).

In order for you to manage your stock of particular materials, and to cover situations where you might not have a particular material when you need it, you can trade materials at "Material Traders" for other materials, but the exchange rates are poor, so you have to trade wisely as dictated by your current need. As stated above Material traders are found in the contacts menu and each specialise in just one of the three types of material (Raw" Manufactured, or Encoded).

Materials have grades "1" being very common (and used in lower grade engineering upgrades) , "5" being extremely rare (and used in the top grade upgrades).

For each of the three main types of material, there are several subtypes (not so easy to apprieciate, but for instance one subtyoe of Manufactured materials is to do with heat management, and another to do with conduction). The subtype distinction is important to understand when trading materials.

The higher grades of materials are extremely valuable to commanders, and deserve wise management.

As I said above, exchange rates are poor. To grade lower grade materials for the next grade within the same sub category takes SIX of the lower grade to obtain just one of the next grade up. Similarly, to grade for the SAME grade of material in another subtype costs is a six to one ratio. Trading DOWN within a subtype obtains THREE of the next lower grade for one of the higher. Trading both cross-subtype, and cross-grade, incurs both multipliers, and so is even worse value)

As higher grade materials are hard to obtain, it's generally poor practice to trade them away. It's better to trade up, or at a push to the same grade across subtypes. If you are linked to Inara (well worth doing), Inara will keep track of your materials and provides a good visualisation of your stock.

You can only store so many of each individual material. You can keep 300 of a grade one such as Iron, 250 of a grade two, up to 100 of a grade five. Materials are only expended when purchasing upgrades or synthesis. They are never lost of your ship or SRV is destroyed. Those quantities (300,250 etc.) seem a lot but condidering that Grade 5 engineering can cost nine of a material to complete, and the poor exchange rates, you can get through them quickly. Materials are NOT cargo, they take no cargo space, have no mass,, and do not require cargo rack space (which can lead to the odd situation where synthesising limpets, which are cargo, makes your ship heavier in an instant!).

Ooooohhhh I think I get it. I think it sounds like the reason I never saw the materials is I was in the market but materials is a different thing.

I think I'm going to go back to Carson Hub and see if I can look at the contacts menu and see if there is a material trader there.

https://inara.cz/galaxy-nearest/ is your friend for finding a Mat trader of the correct type (as well as man other things.

If you do not yet have your commande linked to Inara, I'd recommend doing it... Then Inara will keep track of where your status in the game in so many useful ways. One of those ways is keeipng track of your materials, to help you visualise your stockpile and when combined with the engineering blueprints section, and to compare your mats stock with the engineering upgrades on your shopping list to highlight shortfalls.....

I got an account on Inara and I found places that look like it should show my ship. But I could not figure out how to link them together to show my ship.

For example I have a little program that runs when I play the game (ED Market Connector) which I finally figured out by authorizing it somehow. So now it reports where I've been to some database online somewhere. But I don't know how to do that same thing with Inara. I think it's because I'm learning slowly and just need to take my time and I'll eventually figure it out. So I'm not in a rush, it'll just take time I think.

Okay duh, I just clicked Settings and there is a giant button that says link my account. So yeah I found it LOL. I'm a dummy.

Okay I linked the account then authorized, then clicked import frontier data. Now it's doing something.
