Ungulate Talk

There is always more ungulates I would like but at this point the only two I'm dying for are a muntjac and musk ox. It's a shame we didn't get the muntjac here, I really want a small ungulate I can mix with other animals and that one is perfect. As for the musk ox, I just don't feel like the Arctic is really complete without it and nothing is really shaking that for me.

Those are probably my two most wanted right now

My top ungulates now are:
  • Musk ox - would be a nice piece to our Arctic collections
  • Basic North American deer - my choice would be the whitetail, but due to the controversy it can be any
  • Musk deer - a freaky little dude that looks primeval. Would be an eye catcher

If this is our last pack, how do you guys feel about our ungulate roster in general? In terms of representation: taxonomically, in captive history, regions represented, Quality, and Uniqueness

Honestly, it is really really good. Probably the best represented animal group in the whole game. A few smaller species like the muntjac would have been nice but overall I can live without them.

It's good and fine, but not overpresented like often said. With the blackbuck and the Nilgai, we got the most essential 2. Of course, for a zoo game, this roster is, wow, but for real zoos, there should be more options, for me especially for the African antelopes, all of my savanna habitats always have the same antelopes in it lol. But, ungulates are the best represented group in this game, this is a fact. I am really curious to see, which base game rooster we will see in Planet Zoo 2 and I really hope, that the blackbuck is in the base game for Planet Zoo 2, its just so needed in my opinion.

I agree especially when it comes to re using African hoofstock

I think the ungulate roster currently covers all of the most important and well-known species. For almost every relevant zoo niche except mini-deer and local picks, I have at least one option.

Taxonomically, we've got good representation for caprines, pigs, antelopes, bovids, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, tapirs, and camels. Deer is probably the weakest point; a muntjac and a generic New World deer like the white-tailed would be very nice. For others, I think a musk ox, impala, and maybe an eland would be good.

By zoo presence, a kudu, eland, muntjac, wapiti, white-tailed deer, and roe deer would be strong candidates. Also, we could use a few more domestics like a pony, hot-weather cow like the watusi, dwarf goat, poitou donkey, and pot-bellied pig.

By region, it would be nice to give the Arctic its missing icon, NA at least one 'normal' deer, SA its first deer, the Middle East another ungulate, another Asian deer for variety, and perhaps a couple more African ungulates.

By popularity, the musk ox is the clear favorite, but the wapiti, kudu, and muntjac aren't too far behind.

All in all, I'd say we have the basics, but more would be nice.

I think all three are good, the only shortcoming is that PD deer has too few fur colors.
If there is one regret, it is that we got the Borneo elephant instead of the Sumatran rhino. I have speculated why the Borneo elephant was selected. Since South Asia and East Asia have representative animals in this DLC, but Southeast Asia does not, so a Southeast Asian species is needed. As for the Sumatran rhino, I personally think that it is not because of its low popularity, but its popularity has always been high, but many people do not want it, which makes the production company difficult, so they chose a "less controversial" one. In other words, they seem to have chosen a safe option, but in reality... everyone can see it.
It's really a pity. The Sumatran rhino is very different from all the current rhinos, but we can only hope to have it in PZ2.

As with others, I think the ungulate rep is strong. Also, contrary to what you see elsewhere on the forum, ungulates are not overrepresented either.

  • Europe already has 2 deer species(4 counting Moose/Reindeer), so something like Roe Deer is pretty far down the list. NA could use another deer species such as Elk, White-tailed or Mule Deer
  • Guanaco/SA deer would be welcome, but not a priority
  • Caprines are in great shape, with Aoudad being the best option not already in game
  • With the addition of Blackbuck, Nilgai and PDD, Asia looks solid. Gaur, Muntjac or Japanese Serow would be welcome
  • Musk Ox is now the most popular individual ungulate not yet in game
  • Africa could still use a couple more additions to give mixed habitats more diversity. Eland and Kudu would be my choices, but Impala, Hartebeest, Waterbuck, Klipspringer, Gerenuk, and others would also be nice additions
