Unit of speed?

It's surprisingly difficult to find any information about which units the speed readout in your ship is actually in. The official manual doesn't specify it and I can't find any official word. I seem to remember reading somewhere that it is in m/s, which seems reasonable. The top speeds are around "300" to "400", which in case those are in m/s would be 1080 km/h to 1440 km/h, wich sounds plausible. That's about fighter jet speed. Mach 1 is 1225 km/h at sea level.

Is there any official word or confirmation about this?

Ugh - I hate to be pedantic but... ;)

C = Speed of light in a vacuum (The speed of light is not constant through all media)

LS and MM are measures of distance and not speed.

C = multiples of speed of light
LS = light second.
Mm = millions of meters per second.

Ls is light second which is a unit of distance.
The only speeds units this games uses is in super cruise: c (spead of light), MM/s (million meters a second)
and out of super cruise M/s (meters a second)

1C = 1 x Speed of Light in a vacuum blah blah (7 times around the earth per second)

(distance) 1Ls = 1 Light Second (distance of 7 times around the earth)

(distance and speed) 1Mm = 1 Mega Meter (1000 Kilometers)

You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon?…It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.

All achieved with a friendship drive. Marvellous isn't it?

Oh no... Not that again... :p

There is a bit of ret-conning that says Han found a way to do what was accepted as an 18 parsec run between points to a 12 parsec route skirting some super-dangerous black hole cluster. There's probably a diagram explaining this somewhere on them interwebs.

That sounds made up after the mistake in the film was made so as not to look stupdi. I'm gonna need a flame coat here.

Like this one? They have cgi now so they could have removed it but it became too famous. And besides, it's obvious from Obi Wan's face... he's lying...!!!

Obi Wan looking incredulous... Might as well have said "Pull the other one..."

To make it super clear now:

Out of supercruise: Your speed is in meters per second (m/s), this is not stated on the hud but very easy to test by moving towards objects, driving at 200 should take you 5 seconds to move 1km

In supercruise now:

km / s = kilometer per second
Mm / s = megameter per second = 1000 km/s, the game starts showing megameters (Mm) for distances under 0.1Ls I believe
1c = 1Ls / s; Ls = lightsecond = the usual distance unit you see in game, so if you go at 1000c you will be moving 1000Ls every second.

c is also the speed of light blah blah blah as has been stated previously but that is actually not important for us in the context at all.

its m/s in normal drive...
I don't doubt it, but I'm just curious whether there is actually an official source for that? In other words: how do you know?

Actually, if we're going to be pedantic, c is the speed of light in a vacuum, not C. ;) :p

What I want to know is why you dont get a speeding ticket inside the orbitals. Ive blasted outta and into those full chat and the bizzies never batted an eyelid. But just accidently scuff one with a beam and theyre all over you like a box of doughnuts.

To all: thanks for the replies! It's clear what the units of speed are in supercruise, because the HUD actually displays them. But for some strange reason when on impulse power it doesn't. The consensus is that it's m/s, I was just curious if that's actually officially confirmed anywhere.
