Newcomer / Intro Universal Cartographics Help!

I'm sure this has been asked but since I'm new to the forum I cant search for threads due to forum restrictions etc.

I've been scanning new planets in systems that don't have info in solo mode. When I get to a station to sell them it says Travel 20+ Ls to sell and all of my scan data is red. Soooo am I'm SOL on the ones I've already scanned? Also I don't know what this means. I assume it means travel outside of 20 Ls before locking onto a celestial body and scanning it. If I'm already out of luck with my previous scans I'll be pretty disappointed. One of them was worth over 1k creds.

I have about 5 scan sales and they're all red as the scan data is around 5 Ls for each one. I'm using the basic discovery scanner btw. Can someone explain what I'm doing wrong here.

its not Ls, its Ly. you have to sell the data 20 light years away from the system you scanned to get it. the data you have already collected will be fine and can be sold once you make a couple more jumps.

Ah very good. Thank you very much for this. That actually makes sense.

Is there a lot of money in Exploration? The stuff I've done has only brought me enough to pay my fuel bill...

Scan a system with a single sun for ~600cr. Use said ~600cr to buy a fuel scoop. No more paying for fuel... :D

I've not made a lot of money but about 50% of my earnings is from scanning. I now have a decently equipped Adder.

I made a few thousand from it. I explored an entire unexplored anarchy system and only got 2k or so, then a few planets in one of the "core" starting areas and got over 5k for it, which is weird because I assumed that system was already fully explored since it's nearby my starting system and had multiple stations and a lot of traffic. I'm thinking a lot of the reason for the increased price was due to resource extraction sites.

On the one hand I really appreciate that a system can be considered unexplored if you yourself haven't explored it, and on the other hand it makes no sense. I mean if I go to Sol or a system nearby will it be considered unexplored even though I know hundreds if not thousands of people have been through and explored it?

I'd definitely recommend a fuel scoop - it pays for itself very quickly, and really helps if you're planning to do a lot of exploring. The money is reasonable, and can really help when you're starting out, When new ships and upgrades are in the tens to low hundreds of thousand credits, a few thousand credits from exploring can be a welcome boost.

I think... It is unexplored if your ship computer does not know about it.

If you go on to the Galaxy map you often (not always) see an option to purchase data for a system. If it says it has no data on that system (mind the 20LY limit thing) you can go scan that system and potentially come back and sell the data. I have sold data on scanned systems multiple times to multiple systems. It's a gift that keeps on giving!!! :D

How? I sold mine and it disappeared from the list.

I have over 10k in data info. They vary in value from 980cr up to 4200cr. I want to cash it all in so off I go. Now I have a trail of.more places to explore and I missed the 20 ly Mark by 1 to 10 ly.

That system I got over 4K for had a lot of planets, multiple mining fields and was binary and an Anarchy system. It's where I got my first and only kill(so far)

I'm liking exploring, a lot.
