UNKNOWN ARTEFACT: Sound Engineers, apply here!

For reference, I heard that little gem posted above ("your objective is...") while investigating digitalscream's 'UA_1' recording.

Damn, now I've heard it, It does sound very convincing.
(Im using Audacity, pitch up two octaves, then hi/lo filter at 2000Hz 100Hz with 24db rolloff)

Edit: Its better with saman's He Bo 3 recording

Agreed - largely why I dismissed this section in the first place. Perhaps the source audio is actually of human origin, but FDEV applied some technical wizardry to make it sound more... Thargoid-y.

If it ends up being a couple of Devs ordering a Domino's Pizza*, I swear, I may just give up and get back to locating the Formadine Rift...

*other Pizza brands are available
Lmao...that would be very disappointing..this has got me buzzing

Has anyone made a note of the discovery co-ordinates of each UA? Could that be a clue in itself?

Hey guys, after watching people scramble ideas on how to understand the UA I think we need to take a different approach, the UA is very likely going to be uncovered by an in game mechanic. anyone who has one should take it to a black hole, eject it and then listen to it. you may find the sound changes to something we can understand better ;)

No.

You can't just assume that and then say that we should try an approach that involves bringing it to something completely unrelated with no leads to suggest doing so.

This thing degrades your ship as you carry it. You can't just willy-nilly skip out to the nearest black whole-which isn't very near-to listen to it. There are only a few of us who have them and we can't spend hours at a time on every suggestion that pops into everyone's mind. We need good ideas. Not to mention this isn't even the main thread, go there for things like that.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm being a jerk, but really people.

This, and that's even before you get into the fact that this is the thread specifically for audio-based leads.

There may be a voice in the Ancient artifact transmission. Here's how I found it:

Tools: Audacity
Sample used - Digiscream's audio http://www.digitalscream.org.uk/audio/unknown_artifact_audio.mp3

Method:

1) cut off the in-game audio (cargo scoop) at the end of the sample
2) Normalised remaining sample to 0DB
3) Pitch shift up by two oactaves

4) using audactity, I duplicated a portion of the background hum, and used this as a sample in the "Noise reduction" tool. The same effect may be done better by using a band pass filter. This was a quick and dirty attempt, with a little time we can clear this up a lot.

5) And here's the result:

CAUTION: turn down your volume :)

There is human voice after each burst of whale song. It sounds like a numbers station.

Someone with better audio skill than I should be able to process the audio with more clarity. This was inspired by the recent reddit post, which may not have been a hoax after all :)

Edit: Here's the reddit post that inspired the attempt effort. I was attempting to see if this post was a hoax or not: http://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/353aao/ive_managed_to_read_unknown_artefact_message/

I've just followed your procedure, and clipped out the purrs and growls, leaving only the upshifted "chitters".
They are identical after each growl. And I mean IDENTICAL. I applied a couple of tweaks like low pass/high pass to try and clean up the sound, but in the end...
I can hear numbers.

"Eight seventy seven six six four nine two"

Can we get the audio? :D

Typed it into the galaxy map and nothing... hmm what else?

Hah, i hear Eight hundered and Eight, Zero Six Eight, Five Zero Three.

The more i listen the less convinced i am its speech! I'll be seeing thargoids in my cornflakes tomorrow, I fear.

Oh, and putting heavy compression on the sound will help listening , smoothing off those trumpets and raising up the quieter bits.

That's what I hear in every clip, this sound after the growl is identical. I think it's the cipher.

This thread is for Audio nerds only - we're attempting a singular task, not entertaining new ideas without substance. All other avenues of investigation are being handled by other threads.

Agreed - I've overlaid a couple of instances from different recordings and they match perfectly. It's another non-random block that proves that this isn't just random noise.

Excellent work with the numbers - I'm not tuned into those yet. More Whisky required!

Don't laugh please but human hearing isnt that great compared to some of our animal and insect friends. Some insects can hear very high frequency sound that we cannot...Thargoids are insectoid. Is there any high frequency stuff hidden within the sounds? Apologies if this sounds dumb

Sorry gentlemen where were you when the sound was recorded? Those numbers are typical of the radio chatter you get when you're in the same instance as a space station. It's the one that others had attributed to ancient artifacts as well.

But didn't it sync perfectly with the UAs sounds each cycle? That can't be a coincidence.

It sounds like the sample is present in every clip and is always identical and always comes right after the whale growl. I think this shows it's definitely a part of the UA noise and not station interference.

Here's my clip on my Dropbox.

Steps taken
1) Change pitch up 2 octaves (24 semitones)
2) Normalised to 0.0
3) Noise reduction, 6, 6.00, 3
4) Noise reduction, 6, 6.00, 3

I should also add this is from unknown_artifact_audio.mp3 by darksniper.

And here's My snippet of just the "voice" part. Boosted in the 1-5k range, cut other freqs.

This is a very good idea. There are lots of repeating patterns in the sounds, and this apparent "voice" (if we're not space-crazy) was at a pretty low freq.

It's possible that other things may have been scattered through multiple bands.
