Engineers unknown fragment for Palin

Does anyone know where to get the unknown fragments?

Yes, go to any system 130-150ly from Merope and look for "Anomaly Detected" signal sources. They contain an Unknown Artefact. Marvel at the art and sound for a bit and then interact with aliens the only way we can at the moment - shoot or ram it.

Good work on getting the 25 Modular Terminals. I'm only on 15. Does Qwent have Universal Cartographics?

Gah, it took me about two hours of looking for USS-s to get four of those fragments, so I can look forward to ten more hours of watching my nav panel. Great.

<rant>

This is a perfect example what is wrong with this patch.

A challenging and fun task would have been "bring me 3 live UAs at the same time"

This would have required planning of a UA carrier ship loadout, a relatively short amount of nav panel watching and careful execution. Paying attention to the cargo hatch status, module repair mid-flight, chance for a failure and having to try again.

But noooo, lets give a task that only requires waiting for USS spawns for a dozen hours.

Gameplay design FAIL.

edit:
Oh and even no game code change would be needed if the requirement is simply 3 UAs. Then the player can decide to try to get them all at once for added risk and quicker result, or one by one for slower but safer progress. How about that, alternate solutions with different risk vs time invested.

If your proposal was the implementation I'm pretty sure even more people would have made comments about "gameply design FAIL" and "grind grind grind"...just sayin... ;):p

Hey OP, thanks for the screenshot.

Now I know how to unlock this guy. Cheers. :)

Care to elaborate why are you sure about that that? Waiting for the correct USS to spawn is one of the worst ways to spend gaming time. The less we have to do this the better. How's having to find 3 UAs is more grind than finding 10+ ?

Maybe they hoped that, for once, players wouldn't be seeking "instant gratification"-the primary motive behind the very grinding that grinders claim to hate so much.

You realise you are defending one of the most terrible mechanics in this game. Waiting around in space for some rng to kick in and the right signal source to appear. It has nothing to do with the buzzwords "instant gratification" and everything to do with it being a boring, shoddy mechanic.

unknown fragments = Destroyed Unknown Artefact
Word on the street says to ram it or pick it up and release it again to die a natural death. You get more UF. This could just be SSSSS.

Just went to the find some unknown fragments for Palin as well.
I can confirm while shooting and ramming the UA will only produce 1 single fragment. If you can scoop the UA first, then drop it and wait for it to die. It will produce 2 unknown fragments.

edit: the second time I do that it produced one fragment only. so I guess it is not 100% guaranteed.

Ramming produced 2 fragments for me. Seems like 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 drop 2 fragments.

I racked up a 3 day bounty doing a base raid for 4 modular terminals, so I headed out to collect unknown fragments (after a quick stop over at the California Nebula to see the new double barnacle).

I'm now patiently mapping systems in the unknown artifact shell around Merope waiting for those UA's to show so I can blow them up for fragments. I guess one person's horrible grind is another person's "something to do while on the lamb".

For the record I accidentally rammed my first one and got one fragment, shot my second for one fragment, and the last 3 I've shot carefully have yielded 2 fragments each for a total of 8. Still got 2 days before my bounty expires, so no hurry :)

I don't know whats the worst design choice here.
Having to unlock Qwuent first by unlocking him from Elvira, having to findind up to 25 UAs, or the fact that you need to search the forums first to even find out how to get the goddamn UFs in the first place.

I wish we had material trading, then I'd go and trade arsenic for UFs because I have way more luck coming across that than I've had with UAs.

As I can't find any better data, I' like to share mine. Started collecting Unknown Fragments this morning, and after 3.5 hours I'm at 13 pieces. *Sigh*
HIP 14479 seems like an ok place, and the proper USSs spawned between 500 and 1000 ls from the star, in deep space. But this might be biased, haven't searched a lot anywhere else. What's good: share of anomalies is higher than 50%. Upon UA destruction, I get 1.4 pieces on average. Can't say anything about the best method, you'd need much higher numbers. SC speed does not matter, I think. Slow is best, as you can immediately drop into the USS. Saves time ...

Please find the details in this Google doc (link).

It would be great if CMDRs posted more data here. There might be better spawn rates somewhere else.
