Newcomer / Intro Unlocked Felicity Farseer.. and now?

Hi commanders,
after long days of search I finally found one piece of fine meta alloy in
Pleiade's zone, HIP 71255 A1 planet. It actually took me more thank one hour (forth and back) with my SRV from my ship and the barnacle (I guess this is the reason why I found the metal alloy...). Not to mention that all the up-and-down through the hill forced me to stop as I got nausea (and I almost destroyed my SRV :O).

Now I have no idea of what to do :)
As far as I understood, each engineer is specialized in one type of equipment, but they all can do some basic engineering of any equipment. Am I right?
Is there any drawback in using an Engineer to upgrade modules that are not his/her speciality?

Giving to the engineer the required unlock items will open the engineer to modding... I trust we're already on the same page as far as that goes.

Generally it's a good idea to use the pin blueprint option on things they can craft to max level... only because that simplifies that process for you - being able to do it from any station. (You'll need to visit any engineer that crafts the same blueprint to any level in order to apply a special effect on that blueprint.)

Otherwise, no.... no drawbacks on modding things to mid level as you go along.

Engineers do specialise in that only one or two of them can go all the way to grade 5 for a given module. They can do lower grades for some other modules mostly, but none can work on any module.

Felicity specialises on FSDs for example, and can do some work - but only to minor grades - on sensors, scanners etc.

See here for details:

Using a pinned blueprint does not improve your reputation with an engineer. Reputation is gained only by engineering on the engineer's base. Until you've maxed your reputaion It's better to do all engineering at the engineer's base.

PS: If you play in open beware of the gankers hanging out in Farseer's system and around her base. If you're destroyed you'll have to get new meta-alloys.

Both points are very valid (y)
Deciat is one of the most infamous ganking hot spots. It may be advisable to avoid going in there in open for the moment - i. e. until you and your ship are ready for some rumble.

Thanks for the advices :)
@Krieger, I left open soon after starting my first CG as I was destroied by a Ganker.

Btw, how does exactly engineering works? I can apply one single type of engineering to ant weapon/utility. Fine. then for each level I have to apply the same many times until I fill up that level, right? Then on top I can choose one experimental effect, right? Then can move to next level.

Good notes.

Often it will only take a couple or a few upgrades on a level to open up the next level.

Also... that linked page on Inara is very useful. It's a little subtle, but between the boxes on the page you can notice arrows and plus signs... these indicate progression paths.
Unless it's changed, once you progress an engineer to about a third of the way into level 3 - that unlocks the invitation from the following engineers.

Each engineer works on different sets of modules. Some engineers specialize in exploration-related modules, some in combat-related modules. Some engineers will only modify a module just so far (to grade 1, 2, 3 or 4) and another engineer will modify a module to maximum grade (Grade 4 or 5). This is why you want to unlock all of the Engineers (at least all the engineers around "the bubble"). Another reason to unlock all of the engineers is that some engineers are closer to you on any given day than others and almost all modules can be modified by 2 engineers. Why travel all the way across the bubble to have a module modified when you have unlocked another engineer half the distance away that can perform the same modification?

When it comes to Felicity Farseer you have already "met" her (received an invitation) and "bribed" her (gave her a meta-alloy). Now you will need to collect the materials and data required to "pay" her for the modifications you want performed on the different modules that she modifies. Collect far more materials and data than you think you will need because there is no straightforward price list, there is some RNG involved. All the recipes for her available modifications are found on the linked web-page.

If I were you I would start by working your way up to a Grade 5 Extended Range FSD module modification (with Mass Manager experimental effect) then work on gaining the Grade 3 Dirty Drives Thruster modification (another engineer will get you to Grade 5) with Drag Drives experimental effect. It couldn't hurt to work on getting her Grade 1 Overcharged Power Plant modification too (I like the Thermal Spread experimental effect for this one) in case you want to add more power hungry modules to your ship.

If at any time you get the "You need more REP" message from Felicity, sell her a bunch of exploration data. She loves that stuff. o7

For the Increased Range FSD there are two special effects that increase the range on small sized FSDs Deep Charge works best but uses10% more fuel per jump Mass Manager gives longer jump ranges from about size 4 FSDs upwards they cost the same in materials.

I'm right behind you CMDR!

So thanks for the tHIP.

Did you find the alloy at a Barnacle site that you scanned with the planetary scanner or was it a random find after driving around aimlessly for an hour in your SRV?
(my underlying point is, is the DSS useful for locating barnacle sites with actual meta-alloys, because I've been to over 20 sites in the Pleiades sector so far - and all of them depleted)

Another question. I can't find that system. Could there be one number too much in the end?

cheers,

Since the last update was less than a month ago, the speadsheet in this thread should be sufficiently accurate.
And no, the DSS won't tell you whether the site is active.

Thanks man,

I still holding up hope, that I am able to find one of my own, and maybe contribute to that list.

However, after visiting four different planets and around 20 individual barnacles, I'll probably soon cave in and take the nearest system on the list...
