Unreachable systems

The boundaries of our jump range has been changing a lot. Engineers, Synthesis, Guardian tech. But still there are some places you can't get to. For instance, I've been trying to get to HIP 2119 system for some time now, and the closest distance I was able get to is 254 Ly (from Whuedaea VP-N d7-0), which is impossible to pass even if there was a Neutron Star here, I believe. So, With the implementation of Fleet Carriers with their 500 Ly jump range the unreacheable systems will be gone completely?

I'm sure there are many other unreachable systems out there. I thought perhaps it would be a good idea to share these locations on the forum for your fellow explorers to acknowledge and venture to after FC will be implemented? We're team, right?

Lemon Slice should still be unreachable. Certainly when we looked at taking The Gnosis there it wasn't possible. There will be lots of others still out of range. Not sure why you want to share unreachable ones - surely the now-reachable ones like HIP 4099 / IRAS 21565-3937 etc etc are more interesting?

Isn't that what exploration for the large part about? To be somewhere others have never been to? I know nobody have been to HIP 2119, so I want to go there and take a peek. There other places like that, so for some pioneer spirit, I guess?

Well, if your idea of exploring is staring at an unreachable system on the galmap then I guess you'll still be happy after FC appear

Somehow I doubt it because a lot of those are permit locked. If they’re not permit locked and we can get a 500 ly jump range directly to the system, then I don’t see why we wouldn’t be able to visit them.

That's why I thought it would be convenient to have a list of these "newly opened systems". I can see there are some that beyond this 500 Ly jump range (didn't know that!), but the list of </=500 Ly systems still would be nice. I would certainly love to visit them once it is possible.

I hope FC can only jump into previously-explored systems, otherwise it makes existing ships redundant for this sort of exploration.

I see your point, but that idea wouldn’t keep up with FDev’s exploration mods for the FCs. They would be pointless for exploration if you couldn’t jump to unexplored systems.

I would agree if we knew a little bit more about FC. We still don't have the exact price, and even with a lot of things you can quickly raise money on, the FC will not be something everybody will have I think. And there's also a super fuel for these ships, I mean, we don't know how hard it will be to come by (or grindy..if that's a word)

“Grindy” is as much a real word as “Arx” :giggle:

Good point - hopefully for exploration the FC will just "follow" you. I really don't want to feel I have to have one to explore fully.

This is precisely how this game starts out for each and every Commander at the very beginning. ;)

FCs having fuel enough to make the jump is one thing... the return trip is another. With FCs being indestructible, being out of or low on fuel with no way to get fuel could be quite the conundrum.

Yeah - especially if they need refueling each jump then heading somewhere unknown could be a death sentence. I hope fdev make a rule - "No Support moves for stranded FCs" - make people actually take a risk

Unless fleet carriers will only be able to hold one jump in their tanks, I'm fairly certain we'll see carrier rescue operations.
But if they had to be refueled after every jump, then "hälp my FC is stuck" support tickets would be a regular occurence.

So, totally useless for exploration then?
Used in conjunction with a regular ship it would potentially still be useful - e.g. repair or handing in data (not that I'd be a fan of either).

Anyway fingers crossed Frontier have been careful to ensure that they supplement ships rather than replace them.

They’ve mentioned ship repair, but not cartographics. I doubt we’ll see UC on carriers since it would definitely affect the danger element of exploration.

I am in two minds about this. On one hand, it would make previously epic voyages almost trivial (fuelling requirements notwithstanding). On the other, it could open up new places to visit.

I'm not sure I'm so keen on the carrier being the means by which one explores - it seems a bit too detached compared to flying your starship, which is what this game is about. As someone who has been involved in getting to (and back from!) previously-unreachable places for a while now, I can say that the fun comes from the journey itself - the planning, the route plotting, the calculating you have only a tiny margin of error and then going anyway, knowing you've got to fly it perfectly or you're not coming back. It seems unlikely there will be an epic tale made out of 'I clicked the destination on the map, and I was there'. I think carriers should be enablers - helping you bring more ships that have different capabilities, offering a place to link up with friends, patch up after some unplanned lithobraking, etc.

The demands of refuelling and the potential to strand your multi-billion credit spacecraft may well bring FDev to limit carriers in some manner. There might not be epic voyages, but there will be epic salt when people start flying to places above/below the plane and then realising their newly-discovered system does not have the fuel resources needed to get back.
