Update 12 - cannot switch tool mode; black adder in penal colony

I cannot switch mode on tools using the XBox Controller. Normally the blue X button on the controller switches mode on a tool (eg. profile scanner to illegal cloning scanner, or power tool to "electrocute someone" mode). This now does nothing. I cannot switch modes.

This blue X button works elsewhere, just not in the "switch modes for a tool" section.

Also I get a Black Adder error when attempting to board my ship in a detention centre.
I have found someone with the same issue with this "new for patch 12" feature - https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/50380
I cannot seem to add a "can reproduce" note to this ticket - submitting does nothing for me. I was going to put these steps:
1. Die on foot whilst committing a crime
2. End up at detention centre / penal colony ship
3. Go to hangar to use your ship (new for patch 12)
4. Go to board ship - get Black Adder and transaction server error.
Go to step 2 endlessly.

Any way of flagging these for the community managers?

The first one is known from launch (it was on the patch notes, at the end on "Known Bugs") and will be fixed at a later date. Right now, you can rebind to a new button combination.
What seems to have happened is that it's not allowing multiple uses for same button, so the other two main uses (reload and tool mode switch) even if they are still assigned to X, they are not being acknowledged.

About the second, best workaround is to use Apex to nearest port with Shipyard and have it transferred there. Will try to reproduce and add a "can reproduce", but the site was allowing as usual (stopped short of submission). Did it failed for you at submission point?

Thanks - as I said I cannot add a "can reproduce" note for some reason. No idea why at all... captcha issue perhaps.

Ahhhh I read the release notes and even spied a known issue but didn't register. I enjoyed the huge list of fixes in the release notes so was distracted, obviously!
It runs very well for me, although it has done for many releases (and I'm not running anything spectacular) but in general this is a good patch for me - hope it is for others too.

Thanks for the info - I will await a fix.

I unbound the 'Help' on foot key from being X and also there was another one which was 'Hold X' which I also unbound (bound to something else like a keyboard key). Now I have X bound to change tool use and reload, and both work in game on foot. Using a MS Xbox Windows controller.
I thought it was that the Help shortcut was confusing it, because I guess you can use Help at the same time as change tool mode, whereas you cannot reload and change tool mode at the same time, so that seems to work.

Have the same problem as of this morning. I tried verifying files (all 120,000 of them!) Took about 45 minutes.. But still problem persists. Fiddled around with my Nvidia 3D settings, because experiencing lighting FX issues - ie: flickering shadows, massive stuttering etc, since patch 12.

But still getting exactly identical Black Adder issue when trying to board ship in penal colony.

I tried working around this, by flying a long-range (pfft) shuttle, (could only manage a few jumps, baby shuttle is pretty limited at mo, early days until they realise they need to implement a bigger shuttle for longer jumps, perhaps? Eh.. One can hope), so anyway, I arrived at orbital above Earth (yeah!). So in the station, I go to the ship transfer lady to politely ask her to transfer my ship here, in Earth Orbit, (manage my fleet thingy). After handing over a few hundred thou in credits for the inconvenience, it says my ship will be 20 minutes, so I fiddle around in the holo me, to try to fix the missing facial hair and sunglassess issue, go back to the ship-transfer lady and NOTHING HAS HAPPENED! Still says it's at the detention centre and it's gonna be 20 minutes and another few hundred thousand to get it! what??

So I pretty much can't play the game, been face-desking all day trying to figure out what's up with it. I have QWERTY imprinted on my forehead and I'm just tired at this point. Also, all my ships in that transfer UI seem to have a striped shading over their window. Like they're greyed out - unable to transfer? For what reason, I wonder? What's the score here? What's next? I have my attourne-e-ey... with me... and I realise that his name is not on that list, but we must have that suite!

It's a very welcomed feature, pretty necessary really, since you were always reunited with your ship after being sent to a penal colony, so I believe Fdev are going to be fixing this ship boarding issue as we speak possibly tomorrow perhaps. It'll be all fine by next week. Hopefully they can sort out the performance issues too.

I get the black adder several times a day since the update 12

No ideas, but it starts if I change ships from my main ship then later when I want back in my main ship, as I have notoriety and so does my ship, EDO won't let me in it.
and simply throws a black adder instead.
I switch to Horizons, forces me into my ship, then I can go back to EDO and collect some more notoriety.

The first time this happened, there was no error other than a very faulty C&P issue.
I had actually just lost my notoriety, paid my fines and bounties on me and my ship, a Mamba.
Then I did some freight movement in a cutter.
Switched to EDO and tried to go back into my Mamba and it wanted 4.9mil
ok, I paid everything(not my first time of fines and Notoriety). the ship is on my carrier as am I and I have to pay because of some new crime tariff or whatever??
So, I exit edo, enter horizons and get in my ship.

Since that day I get black adder every time I try to get back into that Mamba after disembarking from it.
I didn't intend to bypass or break anything, just wanted in my ship.
I killed hundreds of clean soldiers, total came to around 500k, I have done this many times.
Paid everything off and now suddenly I have to pay almost 5mil to get into a clean ship?
I was in this ship and paid, before I hopped into a cutter
it isn't the credits, its what? why?
I get notoriety a lot and in Horizons my bounties are 100 times larger. Been as high as 2.4bil once
It is a screwup in my opinion and not getting paid till it can tell me what its for and why
till then I don't seem to get another chance to pay it, so no choice but to keep switching to horizons when I want back in my Mamba in EDO.

if it helps any
while typing the last message

I disembarked
tried to board
and got black adder

switched to horizons
got into my ship
entered edo

twice just to make sure it still black adders and it does.

Started having the Black Adder problem a few hours ago when I was killed at a settlement and got sent to the detention centre.
I launched the game in Horizons and switched back to Odyssey right after because I couldn't get on my ship at the detention centre.
I had like 5 missions that I had more than a day to complete, but all of them were marked 'failed' on my transaction screen.
I don't know if this was caused by the Black Adder or the back and forth switching between Horizons and Odyssey.

I went back to the settlement I was killed in, and although I should have been 'clean' since I had already been sent to the detention centre and my indicator at the top left was not showing the hand-cuff mark, the guards became hostile when one of them scanned me.

From there forth, I'm getting a Black Adder every time I try to board my own ship, and in some rare cases when I am forced onto my ship (like when I turned myself in at the station using the flat screen) I get a Black Adder when I try to jump to a different system.

So, do we have to live without boarding our ship until this issue gets resolved, or are they able to fix this if we submit a ticket?

I just came to a station from the detention centre. Instead of boarding my own ship, I took the Apex shuttle.
I went to the Inter Astra service counter and asked for the ship to be transferred from the detention centre, but it's not being processed.
My ship should be in transfer when I talk to the service person again, but it's not.

I switch to horizons to board my ship
mine stemmed from something similar
for me the jist was almost the same, except I didn't die, in the midst of killing I got thrown into a prison, my srv I was in, was ok. no loss other than they did take the bounty on my head fee.
took apex back to a station, recalled my ship, upon attempting to board it asked me for a few mil ontop of all I already paid, I hit esc, it went away and gave me black adder which I now get anytime I try to board from foot.
Sooo, Horizons.

If you have not done this before, it goes as expected then eventually tells you your last save is etc...ignore me and press enter.....not cancel.
pop into your ship, exit game relog into EDO and off you go.

Other accounts played from the same pc are not getting the adder, sooo, crime & punishment extending beyond the insides of the game....no decent clue.

Also did just have several black adders on another clean no criminal issues account that actually JUST got Odyssey, I am buyng a bunch of new ships to use in EDO, 10 so far as well as a bunch of ships to store some prismatics in.
Seems I am getting a Black Adder, every 5th ship....
so besides that it can't get my info from the server it seems as though its running into a buffer issue. hard to say without knowing if all transactions are supposed to be instant, or if some types get stored temporary for a bit or whatever...
but every 5 ships is a pretty consistent pattern.
on the 5th ship it errors on the purchase of the prismatics for that ship, then I log back in finish the buy, move to the next ship...

a little extra in case fdev actually is looking for more clues...

P.S.
Just wanted to add that like a station you are Hostile with, if you become hostile while docked, eventually you and/or your ship might get shipped elsewhere.
I have had this happen after a few conflicts.
In this case I am Hostile with the faction I am killing and I am at their settlement killing them.
Because I got tossed into prison 3 times during this, I simply assumed the Hostile rep is why.
Maybe fdev could check that. I think it could be related, either way it gets all the loot removed, so it wasted the night.
In horizons we are in space, so being Hostile at the start of a cz is not a problem. or just killing clean ships anywhere is not a problem.

I have posted a solution to Black Adder on Penal ships in here

Just bought this Black Adder for the sole purpose of getting back on my ship when I get arrested, because I know I'll be back.
Had to travel to a nearby system that sells the Adder and fly back because they don't sell them here and they don't have a livery service at the detention centre.

Not sure if it was the weekly maintenance or if fdev did a thing, but its fixed for me now.
And my guess was correct, the police wanted to charge me to release my Mamba from Impound.
And it showed me this, this time. so I paid it and can now disembark/embark without any more colored sneks.
I think the black adder is pretty poor method of impound. cops should have been chasing me, hunting me to take my ship or kill me.

Most important is that Message Needs to Be Persistent and zero access to said ship or its srv/s or slf/s from any method till the bill is paid.

I knew the problem and the solution, but the game never showed me the message that I saw today.
simply telling me I owe 4,995 gets ignored.

I hope that it was not dependent on the weekly shutdown to do that.
as in, I'm off to kill the wrong guys again....

gracias.

I don't think this is fixed. At least not completely.
I was arrested 3 times today and what happened was different every time, and yes, I did get a black adder error in one of the cases.
And also, it nullified my effort of not crashing the game by having a clean ship at the jail because the console next to the elevator only lets you get on your current ship and not the clean one.

This is what happened today:

I left my ship at a station and took some on-foot missions at the concourse.
I decided to do the missions using Apex shuttle because I had mission-related cargos on board my ship which I was saving to turn in after today's BGS tick. The reason I took the shuttle and not my ship is not important here, but what happens to the ship and its cargo will become important later on.

Arrest #1
A bounty was put on me by the faction that owned the settlement due to the assassination. I came back to the station to finish the mission (I'm not wanted at the station because the controlling faction is different).
I noticed that the next mission was in a different system and that the controlling faction was the one who put a bounty on me. So I jumped on a shuttle and took a flight to the closest station in that system where I was wanted, so I can turn myself in before I start my next mission.
When I turned myself in, the game crashed while on the loading screen where it was showing my ship I left at the other system.
Not knowing what should be where I checked where everything is when I restarted the game again. The game loaded me in the concourse of the station where I turned myself in, although I should be in jail after turning myself in. I no longer had a bounty on myself, and my ship was still in the other system where I left it.

Arrest #2
I became wanted in one of the missions from the faction that controlled the station I took the missions from. I turned myself in at one of the consoles in the concourse of the station I took the missions and where my ship was.
The game didn't crash this time and it spawned me in my ship. I was clear of bounties I got from the controlling faction.

Arrest #3
I became wanted in one of the missions from the controlling faction again. So just like in #2, I turned myself in at the station console.
The game didn't crash when I spawned in. I was sent to jail and I spawned in on my ship docked at the detainment centre. This is odd, because I turned myself in, and my ship isn't associated with any of my on-foot crimes. Anyways, I launched my ship and tried to jump out of the system, and then I get the Balck Adder error.
I relaunch my game and now I'm spawned in a jail cell on foot. I go to the elevator and it will not let me go to the hanger. I go to the console next to the elevator.
Like I said previously, I bought a clean adder and have it at this jailhouse so I can work around the Black Adder error. But the console only gives me one option -- to get on the ship that was brought there with me when I turned myself in. It doesn't give you any other option like transferring your other ship there. I was afraid that I'm going to go into the Black Adder error loop, so I closed the console and hopped on the shuttle to get back to the system/station I started in.
I get to the station and now it wouldn't let me go down to the hanger, and this is understandable because it was transferred to the jailhouse.
I walked up to the InterAstra service counter and now it tells me I need to get rid of the cargo to transfer my ship. Remember, this ship was in no way involved in my crime, and I purposefully left the ship at the station to do my on-foot missions so I can keep the cargo safe. But the game forced me to abandon the cargo not because the ship was involved in the crime nor was it destroyed.

I say Fdev didn't think through about what will happen when they implemented this impound thing.

Today, my current ship is a DBX. Took an Apex shuttle to a settlement. Decided to do a little larceny, got caught and ran. Apexed back to a faction station to clear my bounty. Turned myself in. Corvette is impounded and not the DBX.

Seems this still isn't fixed.

My friend was arrested today when she was pirating.

She spawned in her ship that was docked at a prison mega-ship, but the game crashed when she undocked and jumped to a different system.

She was on foot inside the prison mega-ship when she re-logged into the game, but couldn't take the elevator where her ship was.
When she opened the console next to the elevator, the console doesn't give her the option of buying a new ship and automatically progresses to the ship she was on. It oddly said the ship can't be transferred to the current location without destroying the cargo it had on board (she had limpets on board). She didn't care about the limpets, so she went ahead with the transfer. But when she opened the console again, she noticed that the transfer has not been initiated and the timer isn't moving at all.

After struggling to figure out what she can do for a while, she gave up trying to transfer the ship from where she was to where she was (doesn't make sense at all, but that's what the game was forcing her to do), and called me up to help her. I went to the prison mega-ship to pick her up and took her to a station that was located in a nearby system, so she can transfer her ship from there.

When she tried transfering the ship using Interastra, it was the same thing all over again. It automatically progresses to the ship that she was on and warns her the cargo will be lost if the ship is transferred, and when she goes ahead with the transfer, the transfer isn't initiated.

In the end, she solved the whole thing by launching the game in Horizons which transferred her back to her ship floating outside the prison. And I'm not sure if this solved everything because she went back to her home system in Horizons and quit the game for the day, and had no chance of checking if the game was working when she logged in to Odyssey.

Fdev really needs to fix this, or just get rid of the impound mechanism. It's causing so many bugs without any benefit to anyone.
