Update 14 patch day - Surviving it, "The Hutton Way"

So I said I was going to back up the entire ED game folder. Then, like an idiot, I get distracted and forget. Now after just a tiny update, everything custom is gone - my keybinds, my custom shaders, my custom graphics configs - everything.

Kinda pizzed of about that... I have an older backup somewhere in some far corner of the closet on one of a dozen archive drives, but I think I'm just going to rage quit for now. Especially since those backups won't have my latest work.

Don't worry, I'll be back, someday. Maybe..

Or not.. 🤷‍♂️

Thargoids got duck right in the launcher

Ahoyhoy, something quite topical in the update notes for anyone familiar with the weekly Hutton broadcast.
There's a whole galaxy of stuff out there needing.... what exactly?

And lo, the patch didth land according to paragraph 10 and it was shiny. Verily the servers have come unto a beating but prevailed. But green clouds didth descend and Thargoids did eat everyone's faces and there was much wailing and gnashing of mandibles.

You're original post was very helpful!

But it would ave been nice if you could have mentioned backing up my keybinds. (No keybinds were actually deleted in the writing of this post)

Is it possible to back up the "visited systems" marking on the Galaxy map? I keep losing that.
Your visited systems are stored locally in this file: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\{your_user_ID}\VisitedStarsCache.dat
At least before Update 14, after you would delete this file, the GalMap shows no systems as "visited" anymore. It doesn't fetch them from the servers either.

It also helps to have an account on edsm.net (and feed it via EDMC or EDD), it has an export function for your visited systems.

I'm not sure what happens now to the file VisitedStarsCache.dat after the galaxy has been split.

Journals are here:
C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous

Bindings are here:
C:\Users\[YOURUSERNAME]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Visited Stars are here:

Ah thanks, I do have an account on EDSM (several for my alts too), though I don't know how to export. There seem to be two different ways?

Well, depends on what you want. "my flight logs" = all your visited systems. "my first discovered flight logs" = systems you first discovered.

The simple method described on EDSM with just using ImportStars.txt has been disabled by FDev years ago. There still is a solution, but it's more complicated. I wrote about it some months ago but haven't tested it since. I hope it still works.

I hope so too.

How do you do this bit? "Execute VisitedStarCacheMerger.exe VisitedStarsCache.dat ImportStars.txt. This merges the systems from ImportStars.txt into VisitedStarsCache.dat."

Ah, it's OK, I think it's working - I thought it will have a few tens of thousands of systems to go through. If it only does 3876 systems, why's it reading all the rest? But it's still good - you're a genius!

losing your keybindings is fake news. been playing since launch and have never lost my keybinds. There was a time when if you had your keybinds left as some default "custom" name it would be overwritten when switching between versions of elite but that was super long ago.

well - aware of two people for whom keyinds got nuked during the update.... and ONE of those had read this and sent a nice thankyou in ;-)
Oh, and one person who decided to delete their game folders and go with fresh install before realising they'd also deleted their binds.... and other settings.....

so really you have 1 person who "nuked" their keybindings with no real description on how that happened and another person who manually deleted them themselves.

So....

I used to think as you do, until this last update. The difference was that this time Frontier's launcher updated my game instead of Steam, and that's what nuked everything. 🤦‍♂️

hrm. steam updates my launcher and "horizons" but my license for odyssey comes from my original pre-steam account (which is what i use to play generally) and i get most of my updates directly from frontier's launcher (the launcher installed by steam - i dont have multiple launchers installed from different sources) because steam wont install it since i dont have it thru them. That's never been an issue. The key bindings are in a totally different folder than the game data. Perhaps the default installation paths are looking in different folders for the keybindings due to a name change? Doesn't really make sense that installation would delete the folder containing the keybindings. But it's frontier so i guess anything failing is possible.

Bitter experience has taught us that IT CAN happen and on occasion has. Hence the warnings! By no means often but... As commanders spend ages perfecting their setups, can be a soul destroying thing to realise you've lost them.

Heck, I've had my pc go pop and was glad I'd backed them up to copy to the replacement. Similarly, when firing up the new laptop, I just grabbed my cloud saved copy as well as my x52 setup and was very pleased with myself for remembering I'd taken a backup.

So. The note stands. Even if for the only reason that the first time I don't put it in is the one time EVERYONE loses their binds. And I don't want that kind of responsibility!
