Update 5 Performance Thread

I hear a lot of people talking about their performance after update 5 dropped. I figured it might be a good idea to consolidate the feedback into a single thread.

While some people are mentioning improvements or no differences, I also hear a lot of people, including myself, suffering from poorer frame rates.

Side note: The new sharpening added in Update 5 via the upscaling option appears to have no effect on frame rates. Both 'normal' and 'AMD Fidelity' settings return the same frame rates.

For me personally:
  • I am running a 2080Ti and a Ryzen 9 CPU
  • I use a 'High' graphics preset
  • Update 4 gave me 45-50 FPS in a settlement
  • Update 5 gives me 38-45 FPS in a settlement
  • In space starports I see weird frame drops when walking from ship to elevator which did not happen before
On average I've lost about 5-10 FPS which is very confusing considering the performance optimisations.

What performance changes are you seeing with Update 5?

Low spec here with a GT 1030- the frame rate is solid (very solid 30) if you don't change the scaling mid game (for some reason). Glass still kills framerate but for once the fps is consistent (which is good). Game makes the PC sweat though, which is still annoying.

RTX 2060, 1080p, High/Ultra mix (as it mostly makes no bloody difference, anyway)

I'm only checking busy planetary bases nowadays, because it doesn't help me if the coriolis is at 60, that's not where the fps gameplay happens.

Ryzen 3800X, RTX 2070, 1440p, all Ultra except shadows (those set to High), capped to 60 FPS:
  • Concourses: around 50-60 FPS usually, sometimes drops to 40 FPS (patch 5 definitely improved that, it was dropping to something around 30 FPS before)
  • Settlements: around 40-60 FPS, both for outdoor or indoor, depends on the displayed scene complexity (there were some improvements in patch 5, was worse at some places before)
  • Everything else: ~60 FPS

For me, the patch 5 was an improvement. :)

Performance is much much worse for me now. Especially on the ground. When NPC crafts land my FPS tanks. When I move/turn around too fast my FPS tanks. When I'm launching away from a settlement my FPS tanks. I used to hover in the 40-60 range and now it's like 15-40. I put everything down to medium, turned off blur, same thing. Now I use GeForce now to play, and their gaming rigs play any other game at max settings. The range of systems you can get when initiating a play session are thus:

When I use GeForce now for this game I usually get #1 or #3, both of which gave me great performance before. I didn't have many of the problems people were having with Odyssey and my graphics settings were maxed out. With this update, performance is terrible. This sucks.

9900k, 2080Ti, 32Gb 3200MHz RAM, 1440p G-Sync - Ultra Settings (Both Shadows settings Low, DOF off, SMAA 1.0x, AMD CAS off)

In Space (Supercruise, or not near any stations or planetary bodies) - 110-140fps
- Occasional odd stutters, really messes with the overall smoother framerate

Station Interiors - 50-90fps
- Windows and interior glass still causes significant fps drop (lowers to 40fps or worse)

Haz Res - 90-120fps
- Similar FPS as general space, but stutters are much worse and more often, again, ruining the overall experience

Surface of Planets/Low Altitude Flying - 40-75fps
- Still occasional stutters, but not horrible, just annoying

Overflying Surface Settlements In Ship - 20-50fps
- Very inconsistent framerate, completely unplayable if you fly your ship within a few hundred meters of a settlement at low altitude

Surface Settlements On-foot - 35-45fps
- But I've seen dips as low as 20fps - Weird loading in the background (LOD changes?) where it'll chug for a few seconds before returning to the 35-45 fps

Overall slightly worse performance than U4, but a lot more noticeable LOD artifacts and/or low draw distance. The stutters and temporary fps drop is extremely annoying, and ruins the playability of areas where the fps is acceptable. No other game I have runs this terribly.

Siiiiiiiiigh. I'm sorry Frontier, I thought the quality dropped after this update cause everything was a speckled mess. Especially the people. It was like they were made of newspaper ink. I tried lots of quality settings but it still looked horrible... Turns out it was my graphics card soffware's sharpening setting. I turned that off and it looks much better!

That said, frame rate is barely better than last update.

Now i'm experiencing very bad stuttering on some occasions(on settlements), this is really hurting playability and i didn't have this issue before today patch

yeah, i just had my first experience with this stutter, rubber banding, lag fest in a settlement.

inside and outside the settlement there are areas where the fps was fine 80,90~100 fps then all of sudden the fps dropped to 20~30's, and then jump back to 80~90
(this is different than the FPS Monster videos i posted)

i see lag = the patrol unit just started shooting me as they said i avoided a scan (lucky i had already turned off the alarms). i didnt hear them ask to scan and no message on screen popped up.

npc's that are shot, stop, fall to the ground then fly away slamming into nearby objects

im also, seeing in the concourse 80-90fps then all of sudden i turn around and im at 40 fps and it wont recover

the same goes for the concourse hanger ... 90 fps and then all of sudden the fps drops to 30~40 just looking at the ship

edit: i forgot to add .. even when i was jumping from rooftop to rooftop that failed due to the 30~40fps lag, stutter fest

i have had a decent experience with fps up untill this patch ... their performance fixes have caused another monster to rear its ugly head today!

Station 54-76fps
Space and on a planet 100-167fps (no settlement, usually getting around the same as on stations there)
Did actually record a video but my FPS Monitor overlay had an issue with the recording software, so ended up being useless without any counters.
Graphics configuration attached.

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER
3440 x 1440 @ 165Hz
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
64 GB RAM @ 3600Mhz
Gigabyte X570 Aorus Xtreme
Samsung 980 Pro
Windows 10 21H1 (HAGS and Game Mode enabled)

Any suitable settlement for testing around Zandu?

I’m also experience worse performance spikes (dips?) even in areas where it was a solid 60. By example: grand larceny mission to get a thing from a container. (The one with 3x shipping containers in a triangle) U4 I’d have constant 60fps. U5 has 60 FPS during glide & then tanks down in the teens when you get close to the assets. It recovers so you land. Disembark & frame rate tanks again Down from 60 to 15. Leave it long enough looking in any direction & it recovers. If goons show up frame rate goes down again for 5 or so seconds & recovers.
it’s almost like something is trying to load & after a while it gives up & framerate recovers. At one point it CTD after I collected the item. On getting back into the game the assets have despawned & game is a smooth 60fps again. Something is not right, these scenarios ran better in alpha!
Ill post some vids to YouTube at some point…

Yes, I've had the same experience in a small, low asset settlement. Really quite demoralising! Bring back update 4...all is forgiven
