Update 9.01 - Patch Notes

This game is such a mess.... Had a settlement raid, triggered the alarm, killed 21 guys, switched off the alarm, lifted off and got shot down by the settlement's guns. Uh huh... so I must ALSO shut down the guns? What is the ing alarm for then? Just to get on your nerves? Also why can't I make the guns target & shoot enemies? Am I the only target in the whole universe in every settlement?

The best part is that absolutely nothing about any settlement mechanics or stealth or [insert content here] is explained in any way to you... it's purely trial and error. Bad joke. When the player does not know the winning conditions it's just a frustrating mess with each failed mission!

If the alarm already went off and the settlement declares you hostile (everything red), you need to make your way to the power center and shut down the station. The other risky alternative is to block the view of the guns with a building as you run away.

I am just as frustrated with FDEV regarding the other severe issues (ship combat and dead bodies), but what you stated here is not a bug. The only thing the station should be shooting at is you and scavengers, but both don't work during scavengers missions.

So you can shut down a whole settlement, but you're considered too dumb to set sentry guns to target your foes after gaining security access. I didn't say it was a bug... it's just bad game design imo. Apart from being logical, it would be a cool addition if you could do things like that.

Oh, and the bugs come on top.

why is a bad design?
You triggered the alarm, the entire settlement went hostile on you, including defenses like settlement guns, sentries and CAP if present.
IF you trigger the alarm, shutting down the alarm will not shut down the defenses, it will only prevent the settlement to bring in reinforcements.

So, next time you trigger the alarm, make sure you shut down the defenses and eventually the entire settlement by taking off the power regulator.
Or... dont trigger the settlement alarms

1.) There is no explanation except trial and error -> bad game design (maybe some people like to find things out on their own... I'd argue most don't. It's not actually a feature I'd expect from this kind of game) I just saw there are even tutorial videos made by other gamers... because there is no "official" explanation.

2.) Why can't we change the friend/foe recognition? -> bad game design. This is pretty much a standard in many (stealth) games. Switching everything off makes me feel like an idiot gorilla who just tears all the cables apart without understanding the least thing about the mechanics.

And of course I will NOW be more careful and learn how to do things right... but I don't think that you should fail 1000 missions before you get to understand how things work. Not exactly MY way of having fun. Good for you if you enjoy everything.

You are right. I had a friend tell me the same thing, and I didn't realize how accustomed to it I became. On my end, I was always told "why do think this is called Elite Dangerous" back when I asked them the same thing. At this point, we have gotten so used to it because we just want them to fix the game/add new content because of their long waiting periods to do either of them.

It's a game that tries to simulate an dystopian universe.
You have a tutorial for the starter pilot - to learn the basic controls and a tutorial for an on-foot mission.

For the rest? you have to figure things for yourself. And in the end this has the opportunity to make you a better player. Or not.
There is no holding hands. No leash. 🤷‍♂️

Honestly, they missed a trick with this.

Right now, military bases are a pain because they have the patrolling ships that come along and open fire on you when you try to recall, which can be a real pain if you get a settlement raid/massacre at one of them because there's no way to avoid the base going hostile as soon as you get inside 2.5km. Even if you land outside and hoof it in on foot, not even an SRV, and remain entirely undetected the entire time, the base will still be hostile and the patrolling ships will attack your ship when you try to leave.

It'd be really neat if you could drive off the CAP by setting the base defence turrets to open fire on them. Just a simple check to their AI to make the existing ones wake out instead of circling the base and stop spawning new ones.
Bonus points: if you swipe the regulator then that's your air cover gone, so the patrol ships come back. Maybe it's worth leaving the base powered so it can give you some covering fire on the way out?

Yeah... those are the things I'm talking about. I think a lot of things aren't even thought through properly in terms of gameplay possibilities... the game could be SO much better with little changes and even without adding tons of new stuff.

Also to those saying everything is great: always saying devs are right does NOT make the game any better, btw. Not everybody's cheering about every single bug and pretends it's a feature. The game is good already, no doubt about it. I wouldn't play it if it wasn't. But it is still far from optimization and I always find new things that destroy immersion.

U10 is probably taking a while as they need to make sure the new voice acting is pitch perfect when FC owners are recognised by their crew and speak appropriately and with respect. All lines will start and end with "Sir!".

I am missing Twitch schedule, community schedule and live stream.
After the streaming firework in december it is very silent right now.
Yes, there are streams but for planet zoo, lemnisgate, far changing tides.
I hope the silence is because all manpower goes into fixing the known bugs and issues.

More than month now since Update 9 dropped and broke Combat - at least in HAZ zones - completely. No word yet from Frontier as to when this is going to get fixed, or almost as importantly, what they are doing to prevent this happening again. Honestly, it's pretty poor.
