Upgrade from 3070 Ti to 4070 Ti Super

Personally, I’m limited by both price and PSU - I don’t have three 8-pin power connectors available to power a 4080+.

I‘m assuming - having the same TGP as the 4070 Ti - that the 4070 Ti Super will come with an adaptor requiring only two 8-pin power cables?

If that’s true - and the price of the MSI Ventus 2x version comes in at something not entirely obnoxious (I also have space limitations in my case) then I could be persuaded!

The number of connectors on the PSU shouldn't be an issue if the PSU is capable.

Modern Molex Mini-Fit connectors are rated for quite a bit of current (more per pin than the new connector is) and an 8-pin connector with only three +12v lines is good for more than 300w, or more than double the old PCI-E 8-pin spec. I run an overclocked RTX 4090 with a 660w power limit off a 12VHPWR cable that connects to two standard 8-pin connectors PSU side. No issues.

The NVIDIA adapters, as much as I dislike them, are not almost never going to fail at the 8-pin connector side, even if one uses split cables there. The weak link is still the 12VHPWR/12v2x6 end, which has lower margins and is more vulnerable to imperfect contact.

Anyway, the 4070 Ti Super should be within all official specs with two PCI-E 8-pin connectors going into the card and most will only have the dual 8-pin adapters.

So the good news first: ASUS GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super TUF that I'm looking at is released at RRP.

But after a couple of network hiccups while trying to order it I then hit the bad news: Out of stock already. That was at 14:05 GMT.

Did a bit of digging around and I'm seeing it be offered for sale for £900+ in various places.

Will wait to see if stock comes in. If it doesn't I'll stick with my current 3070Ti. For now at least

EDIT at 17:40: Stock back in. Yay. Price gone up by £9. Boo.

2nd Edit at 17:50: Stuff it. Ordered.

Where are you looking? I was seeing quite a few cards above RRP but some pretty close.

Not biting until I see some confirmation on the power cables they come with: all the old 4070 cards seem to list (and picture) the adaptor cable but I’m not seeing that on the new Super cards.

"1 x Adapter Cable(1 to 2)"

"One 16-pin to two 8-pin power adaptor"

"16-pin to 2 x 8-pin power cable"

Most other brands say something to the same effect. I didn't see it explicitly stated on MSI's product pages, but they have pictures of a dual 8-pin to 12V2x6 adapter in the product galleries.

What specific PSU are you using?

Scan. It's my normal go to for bits

Cool - that’s one of places I’ve been checking too.

Irritatingly, yesterday they had the card I want listed at £769 … this morning, it’s in a “Today Only Deal” … for £789 …

Specific? Not sure … but it’s an Alienware 750W with only two 8-pin power cables “spare” - one powering my 3070 and another not currently in use.

As for the adaptors … yeh, the product galleries on MSIs website show them but only for the “original” 40 series cards … the new “super” products galleries have far less pictures which do not include one of the adaptor.

I’m sure it’s a marketing thing - they put some early indicative photos up before the final product was ready to be photographed or something.

I sometimes keep a small record, depending on what piece of hardware I'm after, so I can look back at what the original release price was, and subsequent prices over time are.
Their 'Today only deals' are a bit misleading :sneaky:....but well, y'no 'advertising'. Yes I agree, irritating ! :D

Jack :)

Apparently a delay at the Birmingham sorting office for DPD is responsible for my new toy not arriving when it should. So they've either dropped it, lost it or nicked it

If it was nicked, they returned it. If it was lost, they found it. If they dropped it, it bounced 🙂

Installed but not yet powered up. Still waiting for it to equalise in temperature with the house.

Quick and dirty benchmarking from CP2077. My 3070Ti was running at a steady 61/62 FPS. 4070TIS at the same settings running at 84/85. With Frame Generation on its now running at 135. Also running a good 10°C cooler. And massively quieter.
Not even remotely looked at undervolting it, and not sure I'm seeing the need to do so either.

So far very happy. Really worth the £770? Probably not if I'm 100% honest, but not regrets in buying it.
