Newcomer / Intro Upgrade FSD on Cobra MK3 Question

I'm a newbie and just purchased a Cobra MK3. I want to upgrade the FSD drive from the default 4E but when I select the upgrade choices my jump distance actually decreases. I notice that the "Optimized Mass" and "Max Fuel Per Jump" are both in the red when I select a 2D FSD. Confused.

size matters - size (class) 4 is what you need - a size (class) 2 is not up to the job

so what you want is a class 4 FSD but with a better rating (A best, B most robust but heaviest, C middling, D lightest, E stock)

A fine choice, indeed. Para's got it right.

To ease the search for the right module, use something like EDDB. Put your current system in as reference, and change the "Station Sells Modules" dropdown to 4A Frame Shift Drive then click find stations. This will sort the stations selling it by distance from your current location.

Oh yeah, good point. I never take that in to account and someone could lose their starter zone credentials by docking somewhere outside going where I suggested.

Maybe you can't even get a 4A in the zone?

I'm at Bowen Dock in HR8061 now - they don't have the class 4 FSD. I already have about 1.2 mil credits from being a courier lol.

If you're not against using 3rd party tools, I recommend using them when you're looking for a specific thing. (At least at the start to avoid frustration)

Fill in whatever is needed (your current location and the module you're looking for a least) and it will show you closest station where you can find what you're looking for.

Filling in your current system, it showed me that an 4D FSD in on sale at Frimout Gateway and Ehrlich Terminal (so literally you picked the one station where they DON'T have class 4 FSDs )

According to EDDB, there are five stations in HR 8061 selling it.

Erlich Terminal, Frimout Gateway, Libby Hub, Harvey Hub, Hugh Prospect. This changes from time to time, and not always accurate, but surely one of those have the 4A.

If someone in the starter zone ranks up at all in any of Trade, Exploration or Combat, and also docks outside of the starter zone they are cast out, never to return. Which is fine. But a player may not feel ready for it. So be advised :)

The extra jump range from the 4A FSD will be worth it I think. Each commander is different, and has his or her own pace, but sooner or later you'd be leaving anyway. The expanded options for ship outfitting will be a nice incentive I'd imagine. Good hunting commander.
