Upgraded Frame Shift Drive - now I'm stuck in one system

Started game with Cobra MkIII. Have flown a good few hours - just moved to 'Mostly Aimless' explorer.

To progress my travels I thought I'd buy a FSD upgrade. The one I had was listed as 'loaned' - though don't recall which it was.

I bought the best FSD I could afford - a C2 for 17k cr. Suddenly my maximum range is 2LY previously it was 10LY. This means I can't travel anywhere - I'm stuck in Gadagombiri.

Even if I got the best drive on offer my max range would only be 6LY (an A3 for 500k+ cr).

I'm worried that my game is busted now. Totally confused and would like to get going again.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

You didn't actually upgrade. Modules are ranked by class.

Class 1, Class 2, Class 3, Class 4 etc. The higher the number the higher the class.

The quality of the module is rated by letter, A, B, C, D etc. with A being the best.

A Cobra needs a Class 4 FSD. If you put in a Class 2 it will be too small. Like putting a motorbike engine into a truck.

Have a look if you can get the Class 4 FSD back on the buyback option. If not you will have to either try a different station in the same system, or put a tick into support.

So you basically installed a fighter drive (2) into a heavy fighter (bigger ship) Class 3 drive size ship, bit like putting a Race Tuned 1L engine into a 5L Car - You should be able to reclaim most of the cash when you swap back

As others have said, your FSD is WAY too low powered for the Cobra, it simply can't push it. You need class 4 FSDs

If youve left the station and can no longer buy the old one back, it might be that your best bet is to sell the cobra for whatever they have in stock and cut your losses.

Ah. There are no Class 4 FSD available in this system.

Looks like I messed up badly.

How does 'buyback' work?

I can't see any options.

You'd see your old FSD at the top of the 'FSDs for sale' list. If it's not there, then yeah... you're screwed. Thanks FD for not building in a cargo hold system so you can buy items for other ships and it's not entirely random.

When you buy a FSD it tells you the effect on your jump distance in the box on the right before you buy.

If you are still in the station, select the fsd and at the very top of the available list will be your old drive that you can buy back. If you have left the station, its gone forever

If you go to buy a new fsd your old one should be top of the list, unless you left the station then it may have disappeared. And then you are screwed.

You could try selling everything you own, all the parts off your ship, enough to cover the insurance and blow yourself up. At least you'll get to rebuy your cobra.

I think you start with an E4 drive in a loaned Cobra (unless it's a long range explorer, then it's a C4 I think).Modules are designated by class (1 - 7 (I think)) and rating A - I.

When buying new gear pay attention to the number, which indicates the class of module. This is limited by the maximum module size (shown as a number in the module slot), it's particularly important with regards to thrusters, FSD and shields as getting this wrong will really mess you up. You should be aiming to match the class of what you have (or go to a higher number if the slot permits it).

The rating A - I determines the quality in that class, the nearer to A the better the module is, but if you buy a lower rating it won't mess you up nearly as badly.

Hope this helps in future, but the best advice now is to try to buy a module of the right class for the Cobra, and failing that, trade in for a lesser ship, as lower class modules on smaller ships cost less. It's a set back, but not a fatal one.

Thanks all for the help.

Painful result for misunderstanding of classes.

I've managed to upgrade to a class 3 drive which gives me 3LY. I've reached another system. I'll limp around until I can find a Class 4 drive somewhere.

You would be better off exploding. Its going to cost a fortune to replace that drive and it sounds like you dont have the money. Either sell everything and blow up, or sell everything and buy a sidewinder, then buy back a cobra.

I don't have the option to start with a Cobra, but if you DO have that option, don't you retain it on death?

i.e. can't you self destruct (function tab, right hand UI) and then choose a cobra - voila, back in the loaned FSD?

That's kinda what I meant in my post above...sorry if not clear.

Just sell all your stuff first.

It's not a wipe - it's just insurance fraud. Perfectly fair.

I'm not certain, so I would say its better off having the insurance just incase. Clear save would be last resort if it can be helped.
