Upgrading from a 980ti

Hi all.

I've got a bonus due this month and I'm toying with a GPU upgrade.
I'm currently running a MSI 980ti with a 6700K @ 4.6G running a CV1. It's just about ok but I definitely need more oomph.
It's looking like a toss up between the 1080ti or 2080 (really not sure I want to stretch to a 2080ti).
The 1080ti is now out of manufacture and prices are rocketing so I'm leaning towards the 2080.

Anyone got any info or recommendations? Is the step enough to justify the pretty large price tag?

Cheers.

I made the shift from a 980ti to the 1080ti before the mining boom took off and it was a big step alright.

That said, the only thing I can think of that the 1080ti have over the 2080 would be the extra couple GB of Vram.

I have never seen Elite in VR use more than 6GB of RAM, in fact only thing that I have seen that has even come close to using most of it was Lone Echo.
I would probably go with the cheaper of the two, leaning towards the 2080 if they where priced the same under the "New is always better" concept.

I went from 980 SLI to 980ti to 1080 to 2080ti... each time the bump up was very noticeable, though the 980ti is / was a great card. I would imagine the 2080 would be a noticeable upgrade. :)

Cheers all.
The 2080 it is, probs the MSI Duke.

There is some serious hate out there for the new RTX range tho which is is disappointing seeing as I'm about to sink a good few hundred quid into one, but there's no alternatives. The AMD cards are just a massive way behind at the mo.

I recently bought a secondhand MSI 1080 gtx gaming X, upgrading from a MSI 970 gtx, I play at 4k resolution and get way over 140 fps, the step up from the 970 was enormous. I didnt play at 4k with the 970.
I am really happy with my purchase at £200 :D, as I was seriously considering the new 2080 RTX range which would have cost around about £650 to £1300 depending on which model you choose, a serious investment to play games with.[smile]
Elite at 4k is definitely a step up from 1080 especially with a 32" Acer Predator IPS screen.[big grin]

Nah, the 2080 only performs on par with the 1080ti, not that mind blowing, and honestly what I consider minimum.

And I still recommend forgetting about any SS over 1.3x if you want to see 90fps.

You are correct that a RTX 2080 performs the same as a 1080ti. If you are only intrested in the performance right now, you might as well get a second hand 1080ti.

I can only say it was a nice upgrade to a RTX 2080 from a 980ti, however its true potential will only come out when games start using the new chips.

A great thread. As a 980Ti owner, I'm currently in the same boat and most likely looking at a 2080, if only it wasn't so damn expensive.

Elite in VR is eating around 7.5 GB of my 1080ti. And thats what i got - second hand 1080ti OC. Best tactical move what you can do.
The price of 2080ti is completely not worth paying for it.

The target in VR is to hit 4K render in stable 50 fps (all reprojection methods are dividing 90 to half) to keep good visual. Best would be 90 fps, but it is only achievable in dedicated VR games like "beat saber".
The part which is causing 4K is SuperSampling. If you try 200% in Steam once, then is no step back. Elite on 1080ti is holding stable 45 fps without drops, subnautica is sometimes dropping to 40.
In all cases 2080ti will not bring twice higher FPS, it will give at least few percents, what in a case of number 40 will raise to in most 50 fps. Its not a deal. Its better to hold on already owned 1080ti, buy it from second hand, and wait for 3080ti, which i hope will provide noticable boost vs 1080ti. I dont care RayTracing.

In a case 2080 vs 1080ti - yes - that may be discussable. 11 GB ram, vs RT, same performance in games. However, used 1080ti is almost half of new 2080 price, and of course you can get OC version which will be faster than stock 2080.

I hear you and I'm nearly tempted. The 1080ti seems to edge the 2080 slightly, but I cant bring myself to risk a 2nd (or poss 3rd hand) GPU.

i upgraded from a 980 to a 1080ti. honestly it was a nice upgrade and i have no regrets but if it were me i would hang fire.

rumours are of a GTX1180 gpu coming out, which may be a turing but with rtx cores disabled.

RTX looks interesting but i am just not convinced it is either fast enough or supported enough this generation...... but an 1180 or better yet an 1180ti, which if works the same as the 2080 equivalents but without ray tracing... that could be cool...

even if it turns out to be fake news, i honestly think this generation will be pretty short as NV want to move to 7nm. i personally think the 20xx generation is one to skip..... yes i know i upgraded but the 980ti is actually a fair bit better than the 980. i would defo have waited if i had had your card.

unless you find a decent priced 2nd hand card of course!.

Post back once you've upgraded with your settings/performance! I'm particularly invested because my i5 isn't cutting it and I've been looking at the 6700k. :D

PS, the 6700K is fine, no problems. I'm just a bit GPU bound. Poor lil thing is running its socks off constantly.

If you start leaning towards second hand purchase check this out.

Oh and I love my EVGA 1080 TI ftw3 and what it does for my VR experience. From the things I've read from various articles around the net I couldn't imagine VR with anything else. Not speaking particularly about EVGA.

I thought the same up to very recently, but in the past few occasions I noticed the VRAM usage creeping up to 8GB while playing Elite in VR, so that 11GB could come handy - also, the 1080ti has a slightly higher memory bandwidth. Having said that, I'd probably also take the 2080.
