Upset because I suck!

@op. You know you don't have to pay the fine right? Sure it turns into a bounty, but that's a non issue anyways :) then the fun starts!

Only fines and bounties i pay these days are worth the factions I'm loyal to.

Plus what would Han Solo be without his bounty on his head.

Post the tips you are following. Maybe you have bad info. Smuggling is pretty easy once you get to the station.

I think that the Asp is by far the best smuggler unless you're doing missions that only require a few tons. I've never needed to shoot a Fed, nor do I use silent running or heatsinks. I just boost everywhere. The only time I get scanned is when I make a mistake, like missing the slot when I boost or hitting the docking computer before I got through the slot (Its next to landing gear button that I use to slow down).

There is a small amount of luck involved in smuggling. Eventually something will happen that causes you to get scanned whatever you do. Don't get discouraged. Just keep practicing.

I had a 100% record when using a Type 6 for Robigo smuggling, though the Asp is better.

I don't do a lot of smuggling but occasionally there isn't a more appropriate mission available. Most of my recent 'smuggling' missions have been carried out in a Vulture. I line up outside 5km when inbound to main stations - the plod don't tend to scan you inbound until you get closer than 5km. When I'm happy I begin my approach. No boost - just accelerate up to around 130ms. I've not been scanned yet coming in at that speed and it's easy to maintain a good approach to the slot and to slow once inside. Reading some of the previous replies I'm either very lucky that this is working or the 'Allied' status really does improve your chance of success!

Not really an informative post or anything just had an awful experience so far. The main reason I got this game is because I loved the concept of smuggling. Being able to blast into stations and delivery that dodgey cargo! Finally got the money to equip a lovely new asp explorer (not a fan btw, drifts too much), kitted it out for some long range deliveries only to find out that I suck at smuggling! :( I think even that is a bit harsh. I have done my research and am doing everything that people suggest (I'm not asking for tips). It just seems that whatever I do my luck runs out right at the last moment and I'll get scanned by those police! Not so much as being bad at it and seems more luck based? Maybe I should hang up my smuggling cap and become a miner *shudders*

Key thing is to have the right ship. If you are into smuggling I'd recommend the Cobra. By far one of the most versitile ships in game and especially good for running since its fast. The fastest ship there is actually.

Often when you zone into a station area you need to take a look at the scanner and take a look at the ships nearby .. If I am scanned and smuggling I'll just bolt but you can only do that in a fast ship. Then having gotten further away I can stage my approach. You can often bolt into the station and come to a screaming halt. Just hope there isn't something coming the other way. My advice though, ditch the Asp and get a Cobra. ;) Also take care on your approach, I often find going some distnance frmo the entrance of a stations allow for avoiding scans and bolting in. :) GLHF

Personally I never boost on a smuggling entrance - just get nicely lined up from well outside the NFZ, go full chat and throttle back at the toast rack.
If a scan starts, duck once you're in - and yeah, I will re-instance before the exit to prevent the un-announced insta scan that will otherwise inevitably follow.
Bit gamey, but so are the NPC plod,so...

If a cop follows you in from SC, the heat sinks won't help. So if you see one spawn as you start your run, boost away from it and don't request landing clearance. Go back to SC and fight the interdiction. </edit>

Second biggest mistake is letting a cop follow you out of SC next to a station..

I can vouch for that. Failed the last two of my missions the other night because a Fed followed me out of supercruise near an outpost. I was silent running, had popped a heatsink, and even tried a long shot and moved to put the outpost superstructure between me and the other ship as soon as the scan started. All futile. He just closed the distance and completed the scan. Other than shooting at him I'm not sure there's much else I could have done. Next time that happens I'm abandoning the outpost and fleeing back into supercruise, or maybe even to another system.

Completed the other half dozen missions though so it wasn't a total loss.

The most joyous part of smuggling is nailing the close approach and turn away from the star, so you're right on the coronal drop limit but facing away from it. It took a while for me to perfect this but now watching the cops fly into the star as they try to get behind me, while I'm slowly topping up the tanks, is an evil pleasure beyond description. :)

Having said that, I do hope this behaviour is changed for 2.1 and -- assuming smuggling is still lucrative -- that the NPCs wait for you to move away before trying to interdict. It would be a shame for all that AI improvement to go to waste if you can still trick them into doing an impression of Disaster Area's stunt ship.

This ^^^!

I smuggle on a daily basis in my Asp and have no problem with stations. Simply line up with the slot at the 7.5km marker, request docking permission, and fly full-throttle into the slot. Well, actually I slow down before I kit the slot so no problems hitting the back of the station. No heat sinks, no boosting, no docking computer, no bribing of security. Just speed. I've never been successfully scanned going into a station this way. I should add that I also check to see that the security ships are circling in their normal pattern before heading for the slot.

Now, the time I dropped into an outpost not realizing it was military with five security ships constantly patrolling, yeah, they caught me that time. Actually had the same thing happen on another occasion and have no idea how I managed to dock without being scanned.

One thing you might try if you enter the station too fast in your Asp is to point your nose down (zero throttle of course). Might be my imagination but it seems to slow my ship down faster than reverse thrusters even though it probably shouldn't.

I take only high-reward missions which has my hold stuffed with Illegal 24/7. Just fly full-throttle all the time, scoop fast or dump the scoop and buy fuel, and avoid interdiction by security. Knowing you can steer out from any interdiction is key. If you drop, fire to call off scans and move on directly.

Dont smuggle to stations. Too many cops around there. Smuggle to outposts instead.

I must dis-agree. Outposts can scan all the way to pad, and I've been scanned once I was inside the dock too!. Stations provide cover when you make it through the entrance. If I have too much company at an outpost, I leave and come back later.

As others have said, go for the Cobra Mk 3. Its a beast and you can run from anything. Don't select outpost mission, select planet or station mission to begin with.

I often arrive at outposts and there is no security there. I have never seen an outpost itself perform the scan, it is always a ship - One time a station scanned me, but it could have been a ship that bugged somehow.

Outpost can't scan you (well, to be precise they just don't care about your cargo)
You only get scanned if you drag a pirate or a cop on your tail from the supercruise. You have to shake them off/mislead them/kill them, first ;)
But yes, Outposts are tricky, because there's no cover. It doesn't mean you can't be scanned at the station, though. You only can't be scanned by a police, because they don't come inside and they are reluctant to scan you from the distance. But another commander can scan you wherever and whenever they want, for example.

None the less... scans have started after I was already down, docked, and inside doing business. Then what!! Scan Detected.... So the thing is to keep moving. And once in a while you will get snagged anyway. I always pay my fines just 'cause I'm strange. I figure it's a "gratuity" tax. I like flying CLEAN and CLEAR.

Got scanned and dinged for Illegal cargo after inside.... by security.

I've never used silent running. It just kills my shield recovery. Loud, proud, fast and aggressive. But mostly fast and with excellent control. Just don't give opponents enough tine to react. Grab huge profit jobs, load up as many as run into an area, and move. Spillage will be offset by gains. Don't hit the walls going in.

Full speed exits and boost beyond detection limits too.
