Urgh, not this error again..

Got this the other day but can't remember how I fixed it. Getting it now.

"A file has failed to load after multiple attempts as Direct3D cannot lock a buffer.
Please check your machine meets the minimum specs for Elite: Dangerous. If the minimum specs are met then upgrading graphics drivers may rectify the problem."

Turned off my other screen (which is running through my on-board); and it didn't show that message but it did get stuck at the intro-clip just before the menu loads.

Anyone got any advice beyond the usual (GPU updated etc)?
Thanks. :)

Edit: Nevermind, above error is back again. *sigh*

In the bios, for a short duration, disable the iGPU support. Save and let it finish rebooting the system.

nVidia also released an update earlier yesterday for their drivers. Can't say the same for AMD's GPU drivers.

The game is running great for me with the latest Nvidia drivers you mentioned. Had a few slight FPS drops on Hyperjumps within the first 2-3 seconds of the tunnel animation, but that seems to have smoothed out over time.

Overclocked 1080ti @ 3840x2160 - 60fps

Normally the game runs smooth as silk; but lately I've been getting some weird behaviour out of my rig - wondering if it's time for a BIOS factory reset, and a Reset of my Windows installation.

Drivers updated. Reset the BIOS to default and did as Brett suggested by disabling the iGPU. It worked initially last night; but when I tried to log in now, I got the error again.

I basically gave ED a kick in the behind by changing the Adapter and Monitor elements in the DisplaySettings XML file*; I swapped them between GPU and iGPU and my two screens. I'm in the main-menu right now; but will do a reboot later and see if the problem persists.

A thread** I found from 2014 indicates this isn't a new problem. It has various suggestions on how to fix the problem, from deleting the DisplaySettings file (tried that), to a complete uninstall and fresh install of your GPU drivers.

* "..\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics"
( Start > Run > Type: appdata > Hit Ok. )

Update: I got to the main-menu. After trying to get into the game though; the error resurfaced.
Next up.. a complete uninstall of my GPU.

Eww only 60fps. That's going to look terribly janky on a 144/240hz monitor.

I get this from time to time as well.. here's what usually happens:

I will play normally for a few days. One night, when I'm done, I'll quit the game. The screen will turn black and stay that way until I Task Kill the Elite Client.exe, which will be sucking up a big chunk of RAM. After this, it may or may not go back to running and quitting normally, or it may continue to quit to a black screen and I'll have to task kill the client.exe again.

After a few times having to task kill to fully quit the game I've quit, this stupid error will pop up at random.

Once it finally does, I open my Steam Library, right-click Elite, and Validate the game files. Usually takes around 5 minutes or so, and the error goes away, quitting to an eternal black screen goes away, and things go back to normal again - for around a week or so.

Quitting to a black screen and the high utilization looks to me like a programmatic memory leak. Steam file validation has always been a Steam-thing, which has always been one of many things that makes me dislike Steam. Have had this same issue with Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Batman: Arkham Knight, World of Guns, and a few other Steam titles.

Origin Games, never have this happen. Even Ubisoft games have never done this, which makes me suspect it's something to do with Steam.

And yes, I've tested my RAM, CPU, GPU, SSD and HDD's (one of the HDD's is starting to show some indication of wear, but it's not one I run applications from, it's a storage volume, mostly full of recorded TV (TV Tuner card) and not unusual by any means.

So I'd try a File Validation check if you're a Steam user.

hang in there mate, hope you get it sorted!
Thanks. :)

Not a Steam user; but thanks anyway. Busy validating the game files through the launcher.

Ok, so ..

BIOS reset.
iGPU disabled.
Drivers thoroughly removed (used DDU from Guru3D).

I get into the main-menu.
I get into the game.
Game lasts about 30 seconds, when that error is raised and the game CTD.

Honestly not sure where to go from here.
Waiting to see if the validation of the game files brings me any joy. [blah]

Update:

Did the validation.
When at the main-menu; put the game on the absolute lowest settings; and something like 1280x768 resolution in Windowed mode.
Went into the game, and waited. No crash.
Upped the graphics to Ultra, and waited. No crash.
Upped the resolution to 1080, and waited. No crash.
Changed the game to Borderless, and waited. No crash.
Shut the game down; booted it back up and went back into the game, and waited. No crash.
Shut the game down again; plugged secondary screen back in, reopened ED and went back into the game and waited. No crash.

So.. for now, ED is behaving.
I am this close || to tears; so it better continue working. :p

One can hope. Thanks :)

The launcher validation failed for me during the beta. Some files were not properly cleaned up (I had to cancel the download) and the program was unable to validate them (apparently the downloaded file was cached) and got struck re-downloading the same file again and again. I had to remove the cache option and the files manually, download them on the browser, renaming (based on the update.log info) and copying in the right folder. Fortunately it was only 10 files or so..

Software :D

Check your gfx card heat generation. 'CAM' is a handy tool for it if you don't have one.

I managed to get the game working; and it's been running great since around half-8.
Will see how it is tomorrow. :/

I use GPU Temp.
These are my temps over the last 100 minutes:

I don't OC; I keep it stock. :)

That said though; I'd be lying if I said there wasn't a little wiggle in the back of my mind that my card might be acting up.

Edit: Really? I can't use the word that means "cause slight but persistent annoyance, discomfort, or anxiety"...??? - Gods above I detest this over-zealous filter.
