Its not only stylish, but a good idea when it comes to interstellar travel. Never know what kind of radiation you will encounter.

Its lovely but flawed for fighting bigger ships that can resist a few blasts- beams are weapons that need a high time on target to do the damage. Your dist drains too fast to really hurt and you have to wait longer and longer to recharge sufficently to have enough power to burn for a damaging length of time.

Remember:

The beam laser that burns twice as bright only lasts half as long, and you have fired so very very long Roy....
