Using exploration data to gain rep?

As far as I understand it, you gain reputation with the faction controlling that station and the power (e.g. Alliance) it is affiliated with.

Is this possible to gain rep with the alliance?

When I needed a friendly rep with Alliance for an engineer, I went on a short exploration trip, earned 6 million credits and made it to friendly. Before that I tried missions, which didn't work at all, and combat which was MUCH faster then missions, but I hated it.

Really? I just turned 15 million worth in to the Alioth Independent faction, and the station was Alliance, and I only moved from 30% Cordial to 36% Cordial.

In Feb I went on my first exploration trip. Started from Cubeo System, Medupe City. Made nearly 6k LY towards Sag A*, did 1k East, 5k South and final 1k to Cubeo. 10k+ LY loop. Sold all data gathered, got slightly over 5M cr. Went from cordial to allied not even knowing that exploration data gives you rep. Now I'm preparing to do this again with Alioth Independents. Missions got me to cordial (passed half the bar), in few days I'm flying out. Making some final tweaks and touches to my DBX. Improved my setup and raised jump range by 3 LY to 36.30 LY (non engineered). I just hope my plan succeeds.
