Using mouse for galaxy map

Just got the Rrift installed and OMG - it's the most amazing thing I have witnessed in years, blown away by how good things work.

That said, I'm struggling to do the basics now, galaxy map and similar, I have the joystick bindings as I want them but how do people use the map, mouse / controller, if so how ...?

Since this question gets asked about every few days now (must be getting a lot of new vr users), I'll just paste my last responses:
I use the mouse as I did before VR in both maps. The only thing I do differently is control the cursor movements with a hat on the back of my throttle (x and y axis in the galaxy map and screen position in the system map) I still use right MB to control z axis. Once zoomed in to correct range (close)to acquire a lock on, a target star, planet or such, the hat is necessary to (with grid on in the GM) do the precision final poisoning over the target to achieve lock, click as before. I personally like this tandem camera control. I find it very fast and efficient and without issue in VR.

The things I like about the mouse.
It requires no re-mapping and works as before except for being hard to lock a target.
I can grab the screen and drag to move the cursor large distances (as before).
I can quickly tilt and rotate the view and wheel zoom in an out (as before).
While zooming in to slow speed of cursor, I can use the hat on the back of my x52 throttle to position over and lock a target and when the target flag pops up, I can just click .
It sits nicely beside my stick as a additional control.
I didn't have to bind the throttle's hat, as it already moved the cursor in the desired manner in both maps.
For me, it is the fastest and most accurate way to work both maps.
Because the mouse was already being used this way it just works.

That said, there is no wrong way and depends on one's control setup. a chacun son gout.

Yep, I'm pretty much the same. I use the thumb hat on my throttle, possibly the only difference.

Grid ON in VR is a must, otherwise you won't be able to select systems. I was struggling with this for about a month until someone told me... Simples!

Yes sir, can't emphasize that enough. So many of us struggled till we got that one. Hey all you new users, don't forget to turn the GRID on in the galaxy map. And by the way , did I mention--"turn the Grid on" in the galaxy map. lol

I only use the mouse in GalMap for navigation when in VR. The HOTAS is a lot clunkier for me anyway.

I just get the blue circle as close as I can to the target system and it usually snaps to it. Otherwise, I type in the system name in the search block using my phonetic spell VA script.

I find system map to be the more problematic now where you have to center your head exactly to activate a station or planet info. It's fiddly too. The slightest angle and it disappears.

I just peak through the Rift nose gap to type. Fast and easy with my Corsair K70 backlit keyboard. Love the nose gap.

Do all the rotation and translation and zooming with the mouse, then when you are near the system and the line together with the blue circle are showing, use some predefined shortcut to move a little bit left and right, so that the system gets selected. That's fastest for me, when playing in VR.

You can move the cross hair (or rather... move the background) and with a double space tap it'll select the planet under the cross hair.

I just move my mouse next to the Hotas, so I can find it easily by touch while in the rift, and navigate the map the usual way - couldn't get the hang of moving around the map with a joystick, just felt really weird.

I also have muscle memory of where WASD is, so I can find that without looking, which helps quite a bit.

Does anyone who doesn't use a mouse at all mind sharing their key binding setup for the galaxy map in settings? I've got mine mostly set up, but I still have to use a mouse to access the options on the main info panel (to select the search for system function, or filter for PP or Economic filter, etc), ditto for the System map.

I'm just not sure what setting needs to be toggled to allow my Hotas controls to navigate those menus.

I use the Xbox controller that came with my Rift in the galaxy map. Translate on one stick, rotate on the other, up and down throttle on the rudder pedals (CH products pro pedals), zoom and out on the triggers...

I also use the controller to navigate the menus in the ship and stations, which I think may be the default.
