Hardware & Technical Using mouse wheel (on X52) to target subsystems?

hi there

on my X52 (non-pro, if it matters) i'd like to use the mouse scroll wheel on the throttle to cycle through target subsystems. If i simply bind it like normal in the ED controls screen then it works but i think each 'click' of the mouse wheel causes ED to scroll through three target subsystems rather than just one. A bit like how when you scroll up and down in a document with a normal mouse wheel it scrolls the equivalent three 'presses' of the up/down keys. if my target has a multiple of three subsystems... obvious problem!

In the Windows 7 control panel i can change the system-wide default number of 'clicks per mouse wheel movement' from 3 to 1 like in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhpz-H7ZJ0U
but that's not ideal coz it changes it for every mouse i have, in every application system-wide.

i also want to keep it as a mouse wheel (rather than replace it with a single key macro in the X52's software) so that in other screens (eg maps in ED, or whatever else when Alt-Tab-ing) i can still use it as a mouse wheel.

anyone got any ideas? i feel like it's so close to working perfectly, but not quite...

thanks
Mike

I think there is a custom X52 control panel where you can check all your buttons and put sensitvity and deadspots on the dials etc. Maybe you can tweak that there?

Only way I could get mine to work was to replace it with a keystroke macro in the software.
You could set it up so that you have two near-identical profiles on mode 1 and 2, one with the keystrokes and the other as the mouse wheel, and switch between them with the mode wheel.
Or set it up as a shift function.

Non-pro can do that, I think. Mines a pro, so you'll have to experiment.

I have a non-pro too and have no function set to that wheel, would be ideal to pick subsystems.

I hope we can get this working.

I have this on my X52 Pro, and it works fine.

Do you have the X52 software installed? It will let you check the inputs of the buttons/switches so you can check the input.

The software is available here if not.

Hi, if you can share a screenshot of the settings you did from the Saitek software to manage the wheel (just the edited box for the wheel management, not all your other buttons I mean) it will help even for non-pro user like with my x52 as it's probably similar.

It's not custom bound - I just used the buttons in the normal Options - Controls - Buttons selection from the menu.

What is does have though is an input mapper so you can check which inputs each button gives.

Theres a longer (and more detailed) thread on the X52 - I'll just find it a sec.

I have it working but not at home now, will post guide when done work :)

It does work on the non pro, and doesn't frig up the Windows mouse

I believe there is a 1 click / 3 click option in the x52 software

i have that installed, can't adjust number of mouse wheel clicks in there :-(

yep, got that already but thanks for the suggestion.

That's good news!! would love to hear how you did it! thanks in advance!

X52 Wheel for Subtargets

So I went into my settings and this is what I have setup - works great.
Windows control panel mouse settings, and Logitech setpoint are all set to scroll 3 lines in windows - so it doesn't impact that.

In the profile software I have this for the scroll wheel:

Then, in the Elite Dangerous controls screen I have it set to this:

Works like a charm

Also - an unrelated pointer for the X52 (found in another thread - makes a world of a difference for thrusters) change your POV hat 3 to an 8 way:

If it's worth anything my x52 pro works fine using the scroll for subsystems, but then something screwy happens and is starts to do as you describe, but for all the mouse options; Left click, scroll and mouse pointer.

I haven't tracked down the fault yet, but the main (actual) mouse wheel works fine...

I have exactly the same issue. I've tried setting it up as per below and still no response in the controls section when trying to get it to recognise the the wheel rolling. It picks up the click (button 32?) without an issue.

Any other thoughts?

I have it working by binding the wheel up and wheel down to keys, then setting the keys to next and previous sub-system. It only worked once I had gone through and removed any other binding references to the mouse wheel.
Not ideal, but it works.

It works for me running in No Profile with the mouse functions undefined in the Saitek control panel. Elite shows them with native icons. The only bit I can never get working satisfactorily is the mouse nub - I just ignore it.

It wasn't working that way for me but I'll try again in a bit now that I removed the binds for the mouse wheel in controls.

Tried again with no profile loaded and no joy. Then re-read your post. What do you mean by this bit?

..... with the mouse functions undefined in the Saitek control panel...

I don't see anything to do with mouse functions in there, unless you mean the testing screen which shows a response for Mouse X/Y ?

My apologies - I meant the Saitek profile editor. Go in there, delete all the Modes, and in the remaining configuration scroll down until you see the mouse wheel, and unbind those entries. I'd post pics but at work.

Ah. Yes done that.
Odd that it works for some and not others. Anyway, I have it working by setting up and down to keys, so I'm happy. Thanks for the advice, though.
