Valve Index Stuttering Head Movement

Hello fellow Commanders,

i have a strange issue playing in VR with my Valve Index.
As soon as i move my head, this movement stutters rather bad. The Game itself runs smoothly without any problems.
But as soon as i move the head, this movement stutters like hell.

Had the same issue with a Vive, changed to a index but have the same problems.
Other Games (Alyx for example) run perfectly fine.

I already updated all Index Components, re-installed Steam VR and tried the lowest Graphics-Settings in ED.
Nothing worked so far.

I use the Index on my 1080Ti and tried different resolution settings, all without any change.

Ist there anybody who could help me?

Many Regards

Try disabling steam VR motion smoothing. I had a similar issue, and that was the cause for me.

If it’s not that, it’s tough to say. Lots of things can potentially cause stuttering (head movement is going to change what’s being rendered in front of you, so performance problems tend to be exaggerated when you move your head). First thing I do when I tinker with graphics settings is to move my head back and forth a bit while docked. Try dropping your settings down by a lot and see if the problem happens with low graphical fidelity. If it goes away, try increasing your settings step by step until you find a happy medium

Sorry for the probably rather dumb question (VR noob here) - is this deactivated in the steam VR-App, or something in the ED settings?

I already changed the settings to very low, but nothing changed (first resolution then stuff like shadow quality, AA and so on.)
This changed nothing. The only thing that did change it (made it worse) was increasing supersampling. The MAin Value was 1.25. Increasing it to 2.0 made
the stutter worse, but decreasing it (down to 0.5) did nothing.

Have you checked your frame rate? Stutter of that type would usually indicate low fps. Check both SteamVRs and the ingame SS and reduce them to 1.0.

Hi, i am going to check this as soon as i am back in game.
But the experience so far is, as long as i don´t move my head, the ship runs smooth, stations and other ships in sight, no stutters at all.

I don´t want to give up on the VR Experience :(

If you are new to VR then one thing to point out is that SteamVR as default automatically sets its SS level, this is bad as SteamVR is rubbish at detecting what value that should be and will often set it higher than your hardware can cope with. It is best to turn this feature to manual and set it to 100% in the global video settings. You can then adjust this setting per game in SteamVR, raising it for less intensive titles etc.

I will try this,

just to be sure: What exactly do you mean by "turning the feature to 100% in the global video settings" - the ED-Video Settings?

Sorry for the noobness ;)

The setting is in SteamVR but you will also want to ensure your Elite SS settings are both set to 1.0 or 100%.

This is the global setting (which as default will be set to auto):

- Tick the override box and move the slider to 100%.

You can also set this per application:

- Choose your game (Elite for example) from the drop down and then adjust the slider to the desired position.

Hello,

I got my index today and started having similar questions. So, why do we want to render higher resolution than the native display? Isn't that intensive for the GPU?

Thanks for any help.

This will increase the quality of the picture, similar to how Supersampling improves it in pancake mode. Think of it as highly improved anti-aliasing, especially text will be much easier to read. 2x HDMI Quality or Resolution needs 4x the power though, so it is very expensive performance wise.
