Vertical strafing on Logitech Wingman

Since I heard that vertical strafe is key to successful combat, I wonder how to assign vertical strafe to a Logitech Wingman 3d extreme. Any suggestions, what is most useful? Thanks a lot.

The hat switch (sometimes called POV) is the optimal control for this. However, if you don't have a head tracking apparatus and need that to control your view, then you don't have a lot of options.

You might consider using the keyboard for such maneuvering in that case.

edit: Oh, also the HAT will do double duty for panel and menu controls based on the context.

Thanks Aero. I frequently use some of the top buttons with my right thumb, so I'd rather bind strafing to keyboard.

But how would vertical strafing work on a HOTAS system?

It depends on the HOTAS. On my x52 there is a 4-way hat on the front of the throttle. Look at the side-on picture here and you can see a vertical scroll wheel and the hat which controls vertical and lateral thrust which my left pointy finger sits on. It works beautifully

There is also a mouse nub which is the second blue button in on the joystick & throttle picture which can be used but I prefer the front hat.

I wouldn't say it is the key to successful combat but being able to thrust in all 4 directions does give you a good advantage.
