VERY basic guide for ED networking

The only reason to go wired is if your wireless is flaky/causing lag, etc.

The best reason to go wired instead of wireless is the improved throughput. Wireless is much slower and less reliable than wired, especially when you computer is trying to push VOIP, game data, and concurrent downloads (software updates, financial data, music, etc.).

portforward.com is terrible. It has a ton of links on port forwarding without any clear direction of where to start. I have no desire to screw up my installation so more clear directions are needed than that site.

This link doesn't say how to check if it is working. It only says how to enable it. It's already enabled on my computer. Now how do I check if it is working as expected?
The main issue here is that almost every router has its own UI, it even changes for the same router with firmware updates/revisions sometimes. Because of this it is completely impossible to give clear instructions for a specific router user has.
...
Apart from using some questionable programs (which you can find in google) you can try to login into your router UI and search for some sort of UPnP information or simply system logs. Some routers have tables of ports forwarded by UPnP in their UI, some do not. Or you can just start ED with UPnP enabled and read netlog in game folder, it will contain info about does UPnP work or not:
c:\gm\Elite Dangerous Horizons\Products\elite-dangerous-64\Logs\netLog.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.01.log
16-03-17-11:39 RTZ 9 (ceia) (01:39 GMT) - part 1
{11:39:22} ClientBuild 2.0 r96731 (win64)
{11:39:30} upnpDiscover() error code=0
{11:39:30} failed to initialise upnp

Share what you have and I try to help you. (here or PM)

The obvious question to ask - do you see people in space and you can speak to them ? If so, then until you learn what/how to use port-forwarding I would suggest your set up is just fine. It's not broken :)

  • Enable a test button to determine if your set up is actually working inbound by FD initiating a test P2P link*

This would be great, other P2P games have a status indicator for NAT type on the main menu screen.

Usually:

NAT Type: Restricted/Moderate/Open

If it displays moderate or restricted, it could provide a link to possible solutions, that way more CMDR's can enjoy social interactions from their first log in.

Most modern SOHO routers have 10/100Mb port links but the wireless can typically go much faster. For example: LINK has 4 * 100Mb wired ports and wireless up to 300Mb. The limiting factor is normally your ISP speed.

In my case it's true - I have 1Gb ports and no wireless :D

realy good thread!

in case of double content, please ignore my reply

some additional links where to find your log files:
https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/faq.php?id=108

in the netLog.yymmddhhmmss.log look at the top, there you can read if e:d could successfully instantiate a port forward. There are also all errors with the p2p listet. Most of the time i get an 404 from the match making web server...

I would like to love to see that information passed into the game front end.
