Very low resolution textures in Sol

Hi all,

I seem to have very low quality planets in the sol system. I have all of my settings set to ultra but up close everything looks like a smudgy mess!

My internet connection is standard broadband so I wouldn't had thought it would be that.

Could you peeps post some of your close up shots of the Sol Moon as I don't know if it is a problem with my setup or just that everybody has rubbish textures all around.

Seeing same. Nothing new. Those textures just aren't designed to be looked upon at *that* close distace, yet - most likely will change when we get the planetary landings etc.

Yup, also checked different texture settings. That looks about as high as it currently gets - the difference to lower texture quality is very visible btw if you check those out.

From my experience of doing planet graphics type stuff, if you're using actual textures (these are presumably NASA ones) you really need humongously giant ones if you're intending to get close. (For example, NASA's 86,400x43,200 pixel Earth texture isn't good enough to see the UK in much detail)

86,400 x 43,200 ... that's what, 2-4 pixels per kilometer? So yea, them textures would need to be ginormous for any detail.

They will look better with horizon

Like the man in the hat said, the textures would have to be huge to have any detail. But detail can be faked with bump mapping, paralax lighting and other nifty video game card features for your video game mashine.

Also, if they just would play the occulus through a mirror, preferably a dark mirror then the "Screen Door" effect will have been eliminated. I only mention this because the rift is heavy, my head looks stupid wearing it, and aside from tracking the hell out of everything it's pretty meh.

It's likely that Sol planet textures have been ring-fenced from the generic texture update as they require heavy customization. Like others have said, I would expect Horizons to bring some nice texture updates for the Sol planets.

I believe a full detail texture and bump map for the moon in Space Engine is something like 6 gigs.

Thanks everybody who replied back and set my mind at ease. It is a shame though and I am a bit disappointed. I thought the Sol system would be the jewel in the crown but all the planets are pretty rubbish to look at, and even the earth when viewed on the dark side, the cities are just random blobs of light. I was expecting something like coruscant and not an empty farming world with a few scattered cities.
