Viper III or Viper IV?

...But also equates to a crazy high re-buy, and not mention that it severely limits outfitting choice elsewhere. A Cobra gets decent shields if using a bi-weave, and huge armour potential thanks to all those slots for HRP/MRP, alongside a higher Base armour.

A a-rated viper mk3 with enhanced thrusters is still cheaper than an a-rated cobra, no?

Hi

I want to buy my first ship this weekend and looking to get 1 of the above. The problem is this, the version IV has more armor + cargo space and the version III more manoeuvrability. Is the version III so much better in combat that it's a no brainer to buy the version IV or will I still put up a very good fight with the version IV?

Another thing that I would like to know is that the station I am at does not sell the Cobra, should I go look at another station?

Many thanks

I prefer the Mk. III greatly. It is much more maneuverable. But I like light, maneuverable ships more than tanky ships. If you like tanky ships you might prefer the Mk. IV.

One thing is for sure, the standard laser you start with are worthless. What weapons should I get as a upgrade from the standard lasers on the sidewinder? My next ship will be the Viper Mk IV after all these posts, thanks.

I decided to go for the MKIV and A-rated it with hull re-enforcement and military armour. During the Asellus Primus CG I accidentally hit one of the police whereupon 2 Anacondas, 1 Vulture and god knows how many Vipers and Eagles uponed up on me! I still managed to high wake out with zero shields and 30% hull. My MKIV is a beast!!!! :D

I am liking the IV. It has the ability to have a bigger shield generator (class 4) and has a lot of combat ability. It is a tank and can be out maneuvered in some aspects but once you start playing around in it and getting used to decelerating, reveresing, accelerating while enaging back and forth with the lateral thrusters you can get the drop on a lot of ships.

Okay, yeah, got the maths horribly wrong there. :p

Enhanced thrusters still severely limit outfitting choice though, thanks to weight concerns.

Since someone brought it up, what is the overall consensus for using the Viper IV instead of the Cobra for general purpose? My alt has enough credits for one or the other, and she's about to make a long trip across the bubble. Eventually she'll be doing missions that might involve both cargo delivery and combat.

Originally she was going to be a long-term Cobra pilot, but she's at a station that just sells V4 instead. I think V4 can be suitable replacement for Cobra in many roles. Opinions?

I say IV. Its got a nice jump range of 16 right now with a a B component.

Why not buy it and give it a try, "she" can always swap it for a Cobra if it doesn't work out.

That's what "she" (me) did. I tried the V4 on my alt account, and I like it well enough, but it's a carbon-copy of the V3 cockpit, so I decided to go with the Cobra just to have something different. I fly the V3 a lot in my primary account, and I'm purposefully trying to use different ships with my two accounts for some variety.

I originally skipped over the Viper III, until I lost my much nicer ship due to a stray shot in bounty hunting. That's when I bought a Viper III, because it lets me bounty hunt when I need to at 1/10th the rebuy of my fancier ships. Well, it's 1/5th now, because it's A-rated and tanked out, but it's still way cheaper to replace if I bite off more than I can chew.

I should mention that my approach is a bit different than yours, as I'm building different ships that specialize in different purposes, vs one ship that can do everything well. Granted, my Keelback carries lots of cargo and can put pirates in the grave, but I've gone with a more defensive outfitting on that ship instead of offense. I've got some mean weapons on my DBX, but most of the modules are D rated for jump range, and I've got no extra hull enforcement. My Viper III is a fighter, period. I did put a 2 ton cargo slot in a spare slot, which I fill with some valuables as bait. Please pirates, interdict me ;) All the other slots are shields and boosters and lots of hull reinforcement (my V3 is more of a tank than many V4s out there) and other BH tools.

ps - someday when I'm rich and rebuy is no longer an issue, I'll try the V4 in a similar configuration. Rebuy cost is my #1 reason for picking V3 over V4 right now.

What else can you do with the millions your making, spend it man, life's too short. Want it, buy it! Nice thing about it is, you don't have to run it pass the little woman. Try that in real life, can go horribly wrong and end up in divorce court.
