VIRPIL

I've had a T50 throttle (V2) for almost a year. I highly recommend it. The only problem is they don't make it any more. t.
They do occasionally still sell them. A batch was available on 18th April - for about 10 minutes until they sold out, like the rest of their stuff.

I'm still debating about a HOTAS setup. I'd like the left-handed stick. Thankfully this isn't difficult to get anymore from super-premium as well as cheaper sources. The problem is the throttle. I'd (naturally) like one that's for the right-hand. Where can I get one?

I've had a T50 throttle (V2) for almost a year. I highly recommend it. The only problem is they don't make it any more. Their current offering is the CM2 throttle which is pretty much a more compact, total redesign. I'm not sure I'd trade if given the option.

I really like the new model actually. I'd happily swap mine for the new one. It seems to have fewer buttons, but ED doesn't even accept that many controls on a single device so it's not missing out massively. It looks to me a little bit more refined than the previous model. There are no quality issues, but there's more 'give' in the buttons and flip-switches than I'd like.

I've had a Virpil Constellation Alpha joystick on pre-order since November of last year which will hopefully ship within the next few weeks. In the interim I've been using a VKB Gladiator MkII, which is actually a very nice joystick for the price. Its main problem is it lacks very many controls on the stick itself, although the base has a quite nice assortment.

Hadn't seen the Constellation Alpha before, twist access and scroll wheel/encoder are nice touches. If I hadn't already exceeded my lifetime allocation for gaming device spending, I'd be tempted!

Well it's no surprise the gladiator doesn't feature too many buttons on the stick.

It was built to resemble a Russian WW2 fighter plane. Those barely had a trigger.

Yeah I can see your choice to keep your throttle.

I have the one before the CM version so I don't have the the analog stick on the throttle grip etc but I deemed it not worth another $400+ or quite a small upgrade.
Personally I don't find the loss of detents between the first run and the second not much loss.

The detents on mine are barely recognized, at best it's a soft bump you can blow through very easily.
Nothing as potent as you can get with the hog when you setup the AB stop, but detents is not something I would want in elite anyways., And for dcs I prefer none compare to what I get on mine.

The latest and the newest throttle doesn't make much sense as an upgrade to the old ones, until I also take into account the planned button panels as well.
But I'm no longer even certain they are building those anymore.

But I have to admit I would be tempted to get both the piston aircraft one and the jet aircraft panel...

From what I've read, the Gladiator is actually a copy of the stick used in the German Bf 109.

I actually like the detents and find them very useful in Elite. I have mine set to 75% throttle which makes it very easy to set your approach speed without even looking at your speed settings. I was sorry to see them go in the CM version of the throttle although I do like the CM's throttle handle better.

From what I've seen on the Virpil forums, they're still planning on making the button panels, but there isn't an ETA for them yet. You might want to check out the Blackhog controllers if you don't want to wait for Virpil.

I've seen the CM versions for sale occasionally, but I have the one before that (V2). Those were discontinued shortly after I got mine.

The only throttles I've seen that are right hand friendly are Cessna ones, but they're pretty bare bones for Elite: Dangerous.

I've heard that some people have 3d printed their own right handed replacements of the handle on the T.16000 throttles.

Right, I was just guessing from two years old memory :p

Yeah the handles on the CM look a lot better, ideally I'd would love the option of buying the CM throttle grip separately and then swapping out myself.

Since my flight time right now, is mostly DCS with a bit of Elite in between when I'm looking for something to relax with, a dent at 75% doesn't work much for me, and for one my most favourite modules in DCS being helicopters, even a small detent anywhere becomes quite awkward, I just mapped a button on the throttle for 75% when I need it, often I move the throttle down a smidge, then hit that for cruising on drop.
It's getting late, and the rum has been opened, I might start rambling..

As for the button boxes, what I'm leaning towards is just taking a whack at designing one or, two myself.
Not really any point in them for DCS, I got more buttons than I know what to do with there.

Really, really, really wish Elite would get their stuff together, and allow for the binding of more than 32 buttons per device.
My throttle including the modifiers I have setup for 114 buttons..

An old Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2.
An absolutely outstanding choice (I have tracked down 3 (2 spare just in case))

N.B. Has to be the Force Feedback 2, NOT Force Feedback 1.

Edit:
This Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback 2 is a truly well made and heavyweight joystick with throttle. It was so well made that there was no built-in redundancy so Microsoft ended up making a loss on the product... there were no secondary replacement purchases and 95% of the production are still in existence (in peoples garages/roof spaces) if not in actual use. The force-feedback obviously is not 'active' with Elite Dangerous Horizons but it definitely feels like you have a heavy old space ship on the end of it. I really can't recommend this joystick enough; even if it means they become even rarer on the second-hand market:
P.S. I don't use the side throttle quadrant on the joystick.....I use a CH Pro throttle in my left hand (for all the extra buttons and super swanky linear throttle)

Perhaps you can answer a question for me. The VPC MongoosT-50CM2 Base seems to need a base itself. Is that true?
The Virpil Base T-50CM2 is designed to be used with the Desk mounts they sell that set your controls at the edge, and below the desk top level. Also there are some other after market makers out there, some are one-off custom makers that do a very good job.

They clamp to the front edge of your desk and are very secure with the adjustable quick releases. For those desiring a permanent solution there is a handy slot on the top of the mount that you can drill a pair of holes thru your desk and bolt it in. If you do that, make sure your desk top is a thicker solid piece of material, not particle board (unless you sandwich it with some thin (1/8") flat bar from Home Depot or Lowes. Just my 2 cents worth. You can use the short mount for your throttle typically, and either the short or long mount for your flight stick. The desk mounts have adapters for the WarBYRD base and the Thrustmaster Warthog flight stick base and throttle. The WarBYRD is what Virpil makes for a desktop flight stick base.

BE ADVISED that ordering from Virpil is expensive, every order will ship for about $40 plus, even just a $5 mouse pad. AND, you may have to order what is available, and just keep adding pieces until you get what you need. Their rudder pedals have been out of stock for months as they are trying to get out the DELTA sticks, and keep up with throttles and bases and the other flight stick grips. The new Thrustmaster Pendulum rudder pedals are amazing though!!!! Took me a long time to get my setup, and 4 separate orders. IF you are serious about Virpil, you can register on their website store and the forums. Each is a separate register, don't ask me why, and you can create a favorite wish list. set your alarm for 0150 am on the day they restock, log in to your favorite list. When they restock you can add the favorite list to cart (click the heart when you are signed in on the product page), and check out. For speed, DO NOT USE PayPal, program in your CC info. The reason is that the website sends you to PayPal and back, and in the meantime some items in your cart can disappear while you are going back and forth. MAKE SURE that you have a secure address for FedEx to deliver to where they will require a person to be there. OR get the address of the local FedEx store to send it there c/o (care of the store). They triple box throttles and sticks and bases, so they survive a lot of abuse just fine. The Virpil controls are NOT plug and play, you have to download their software, calibrate the controls (ONE controller connected at a time when setting things up!!), and then you can play. They have way more buttons and axis than the FedDev supported in Elite Dangerous, so you will have to use vjoy and joystick gremlin to get the maximum use out of your Virpil controls with Elite Dangerous.

GOOD LUCK!!! They are very fine controls!!!

Wow, thanks for that. But here's the thing.....what with all the trouble and expense of getting this stuff, you have to seriously ask yourself, is it really worth half the trouble?

I think it's worth it, an one time investment that you can also use for flight simulators. It improved my gameplay experience and have no regret buying it.

I hear Brunner is working on a direct drive force feedback joystick...
Knowing them, it would probably be in the area of $6k or something.
It is a base for the Warthog or Virpil and cost 1300 euros (no handle included) If someone made a FFB setup that fitted beween the handle and base on the WH then they would have an awful lot of sales.

Yeah that's the current gimbal, any direct-drive stick would be having a dedicated electric motor per axis and the stick would practically need to be welded to them.
Like the $3k direct drive wheels you can get from various hard core sim-racers.

The amount of tourque you could get out of something like that could literally break arms and I find the whole prospect utterly daft as well as awesome.

And honestly I'm not sure the whole thing, is something I think I read about on a dcs forum at 3am and only really existed in my head...

Love my Constellation Delta+WarBRD base and have a pre-ordered Alpha due to ship soon. Definitely worth it. The precision makes FA-off much easier to learn for a start! (but not to master, I certainly haven't - in combat at least)
As you can imagine Covid-19 has really impacted their manufacturing, and they're also victims of their own success somewhat. Massive demand at the worst time! Ordering has been frustrating for many apparently, particularly when a pre-order involved. Patience and understanding recommended! Too much for some - understandably in a couple of cases.
Acknowledged and improvements coming. https://forum.virpil.com/index.php?/topic/1693-virpil-controls-ordering-webstore/

Twin T50 bases here with Delta grips. Love them.
I'm still using the original cam set too and I guess I've just got used to em. :)
100% worth it.

I finally got my Constellation Alpha this morning. I've got it up and working in Elite, but am still deciding on which functions to bind to what.

Some initial impressions:
1) The resistance of the joystick axes is pretty soft in the middle range but ramps up quite a bit toward the edges of the joystick's throw.
2) The control is very precise. I haven't had to set any deadspace at all so far.
3) It's very tall compared to what I've been using. (see pics) My hand sits slightly more than 6" off the desk vs. about 4" for my old one. I'm thinking I'm probably going to have to get some desk mounts to use it comfortably for long play sessions.
4) I was surprised at how sensitive the first stage of the two stage trigger is.

So far, I'm liking it a lot but I can see it's going to take a bit of time to get used to it.

20 year old x box controller 10 year old track ir and voice attack
and despite all these wonderful immersive control devices, I find after 15 mins I would forget what I am using for control as I am just concentrating on the screen.
still got my old sidewinder force feedback 2 and sold my warthog soon after buying due to lack of twist control which I had gotten used too via the FF2 for which I used to have a desk setup for,but now that I am built for comfort not for speed I play from a big lounging reclining sofa chair for which the gamepad is perfectly suited.
my logic being like on a racing bike how often do you look at pedals handel bars or gears as long as they work well you tend not too
and like I say after 10 mins of gameplay I would not really notice what I am using to input control as long as is accurate and it works well

I'm the same as you about the Warthog. If it had a twist axis, I would have bought one years ago. I tried a set of pedals and never liked them. I'd much rather have an actual twist axis than the work-arounds that Thrustmaster and others use for their yaw axis.
