Virtual Desktop

Hi all, wondering if anyone uses this through Oculus Home and can tell me if you can go to it whilst playing elite? Alt tabbing in VR.

Hi, I've just tried Big Screen and Virtual Desktop and Alt tab doesn't seem to work in either. You can start Elite from the desktop in the apps and it opens in the HMD but when closing Elite in both apps the screen in the HMD just goes black and doesn't return to the app. I hope there is a way to Alt tab as I like trading and being able to switch to a desktop screen would be very useful.

No problem. Glad to be of assistance. I'd be curious to know if it worked OK for you?

I have tried Big screen and have not been able to F8/F9 back and forth. By the way Big Screen is also available on steam in beta. I have been successful using Virtual Desktop in steam using the AHK script. As you probably know Virtual Desktop is not free but for me it worked a treat. I even mapped F8/F9 using Voice Attack and a couple of spare buttons on my HOTAS. With a bit more fine tuning I can probably start to do some trading now without having to constantly lift the headset.

I'm trying to set up Voice Attack to paste text from a webpage to the text box in the galaxy map to search for systems. I can Ctrl+V in the text box using the keyboard but can't get VA to respond when shouting paste.

Yes it worked perfectly, I bought VD rather than and run the VD through Steam as you probably do. Means with the script I can switch to desktop with VoiceAttack. I have just set up Copy/Paste through VA and works perfectly. Another great idea there.

Glad you got Copy & Paste working. I've not had any joy with it. I can get VA to work, with voice command or joystick button OK by pasting into a browser or word doc, but it doesn't work in the text box of the galaxy map. I even tried running Elite on the monitor but I still couldn't paste in to the galaxy map text box.

Yea mine works to copy from Win10 and then into the galaxy map text box.

The VD > Elite was working perfectly, now for some reason it won't work again. Here's my process;

Start Oculus Home, Start Steam, Start ED and put HMD on to activate, then open the script. Say VA command and it starts VD and I see desktop. Click ED and back into cockpit. I was switching merrily back and forth the other night, but now I can only manage one switch to desktop and then back to game before it stops working.

Also, I can no longer press 'ESC' to see the menu in ED, it soft locks the game for me.

Is this your experience also?

I found the best sequence so far for me is:- Make sure Oculus Home is working OK with the HMD on then Start steam (if it isn't running)>Start Virtual Desktop in Steam>Start VA and the AHK script from within VD>Start ED from within VD. Then it seems to work OK switching back and forth. I did find it going a bit weird trying other sequences but that may have been other issues causing problems. Resetting the PC was sometimes necessary to clear everything.

I'm still not able to copy and paste into the galaxy map though. I can paste everywhere else though! Looks like I'll have to resort to peeking down the nose gap in the Rift at the keyboard to Ctrl+V. Not very elegant but it'll have to do.

One other thing I noticed in VD options is by turning Mip Mapping off in Oculus options makes the text much clearer.

Thanks mate, I tried that but no help, I did have some issues in the way that VA was setup to execute commands which resolved a few issues, and it is overall a little better but after a switch or two I get this weird thing where the desktop shows for a second or two and then it automatically goes back to ED! Frustrating.

I think I got that problem with switching at one point, but I can't remember exactly how it happened and what I was doing at the time. You know how it is, you're trying to solve a problem, and all of a sudden it starts working and you don't remember the sequence that got you there! I had it where I couldn't switch back to ED and I had to click in the ED window in VD, as it was the only way to get back to ED. If I get your problem again I'll try and see why it's happening and let you know.
