Vive or rift

I am ridiculously happy about the "nose gap", that makes it possible to peek on my keyboard while typing or have a quick look on what's going on on my monitor.

The nose gap is great, while probably an accidental feature, it's so handy for finding your way about without taking the headset off all the time.

.And i just measured said:
That's about how big my space is and it is really nice. Expecially in games like a chair in a room which don't use artificial Locomotion just your actual room scale space.

You can turn off the chaperones and just walk without worry because you see a wall in VR and that lines up with the physical limit space so you just treat it like a real wall no chaperones no distractions just pure VR.

One concern about your space though. You said basement. How high are your ceilings. If you can jump and touch the ceiling easily I would not use the space because you will forget the ceiling is low and there is no ceiling chaperone

I have both Rift and Vive and I play ED exclusively in Vive. The main reason is color banding which was an issue for me in Rift.
Performance and quality wise I'd put them both on par.
Another advantage of Vive is amount of usb ports it require vs Rift (esp. w touch). Rift's HMD is definitely more comfortable and comes with not terrible headphones.

I demoed both yesterday. I like both. The oculus was definitely more comfortable but moving around in the vive demo was so fun in was sold. Or so i thought.

Some users have mentioned to me that ED looks like crap through the Vive. Mostly because of the Jaggies.

I Tried reading up on the issue but the threads are way too long to read through so I figured I would just ask you guys about your personal experience with both headsets.

Im VERY close to pulling the trigger on this but i want the best possible experience. Have the vive issues been fixed? Should I just get the rift? I'm tempted to get both but I just don't want to spend that much money when a headset but I'm probably going to replace and six months or a year when something better comes out

Depending on where you live, support is also an issue, well at least it was for me :). Living in Denmark there are no national dealers at all for the Rift, and warranties are questionable regarding service, resale and support. And I couldn't try before I bought. The Vive on the other hand is sold from one of the largest retailers in Denmark. I could try before I bought, service, support and resale is easy.

Apart from that I think the choice is potato, potato...

I bought a Vive, and am very happy with it. :)

Many of us who have watched the teething of these 2 hmds over the last several months predicted the differences between them would be minor by 2017. Here we are and that's pretty much where we are.
The only shame would be not to make up one's mind and get a Rift or Vive because VR is kinda frickin awesome aye!

Rift owner here, with touch. no tracking issues, 3.5m x 3.5m space, love it to bits. played ED for way too many hours in it.

if i was recommending a new VR headset to a friend it would be vive. i wouldnt wish the USB issues i had on anyone else. lighthouse seems the superior product for tracking, less issues, less bandwidth, less fidgety. not a huge annoyance, but i had to buy the inateck usb 3 pci-e card to level the field. would have preferred it to 'just g work'

other than that, they are pretty much identical. minor differences really. personally i feel there is way too much bias floating around the net and toxic attitudes especially towards facebook. both products are insane, really insane - in a good way. get VR, just get it

Could someone with a Vive explain the setup process they had to go through (honestly).

For the Rift I took it out of the box, plugged the sensor into a USB socket and put the sensor on my desk, plugged the headset into USB and DP sockets, and that was about it.

One of the things that put me off the Vive was the sense that setting it up wouldn't be quite so simple (involving running cables around my room and finding places in the corners of the room to mount the tracking devices).

I personally never had any problems setting the Vive etc up.

Was just a case of mounting the lighthouses in opposite corners (ideal if there happens to be a plug socket nearby) facing each other and tilted down slightly either using the fixings or a couple of camera tripod mounts, plug in and select one to channel C and the other to channel B.

The Breakout box is colour coordinated to show the headset end and PC end respectively. Just plug in the HDMI, USB and power, the only cables running from the breakout box to the PC are one USB and the HDMI, you will obviously need a second output to your monitor from you G-card.

So you have power to the two lighthouses and the breakout box, there are another two power adapters for charging the Vive controllers but they last hours tbh. There is a sync cable that can be connected between the two lighthouses but I've never had to use it. Perhaps for less than ideal environments with mirrors and other shiny things ?

Then its just a matter of running the Steam Vive setup which is pretty straight forward.

The only issue I had was a stubborn firmware update not pushing to one of the lighthouses, a pc reboot sorted that. (done via bluetooth)

A fair bit of fuss was made about the setup process when the Vive went live, guess they had to moan about something !

There's a wireless pack available now, more money of course :)

May I direct you to my other post on this subject: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/319126-Vive-or-Rift?p=4964286&viewfull=1#post4964286

TL; DR: I'd go for the Vive, despite horrible customer support experience (which both companies have a track record for). So if you decide to buy it, be sure to do it from a shop so you don't have to put up with the crappy support and have the store act as a middleman in case of trouble.

Not sure if you ever ordered yours. someone went over the minor visual differences between the two already... so there's that. Personally I slightly prefer the vive although I can't exactly tell you why. I think the oculus does work ever so slightly better in terms of performance but I have a skylake /1080 so i can tweak the quality to a place I'm happy with. In general, as a vr headset, I definitely prefer the vive. I think the trackings a little smoother on the vive as well despite what others may think. I play ED on the vive, I enjoy more of the vive games. You need to do a little extra tweaking with the vive to get it right... particularly opting into the steam betas at the moment... but it's all a matter of minutes of difference in set up.

I really love walking around in VR. I don't like the oculus touch controllers very much, they are good and they work super great... but I slightly prefer the feel of the lighthouse tracking. Definitely recommend getting or making a leather face guard because wiping sweat off the foam thing when it's saturated is impossible. Also with the vive getting it strapped more tightly to your face seems to help clarity a lot. I think the design of it and the foam (esp the leather replacements which tend to be even thicker) puts it a little too far from your face (if you don't wear glasses) and adjusting it in such a way that it sits closer to your eyes seems to help the clarity of it a lot. I know a lot of people are doing those welding helmet mods so they can really have it comfortably on their face and get it snug there, I haven't tried that myself yet.

oh yeah vive does have the terrible customer support. I dealt with that as well unfortunately they were among the worst I've ever experienced, but I can't argue with a good product that I like. Sometimes you just have to bend over to get what you want. ...well... that was a lot more crude than I intended but you get my drift.
